6.2 Backflow Devices & Assemblies: Table 382.41-1, Limits & Installation
Key Takeaways
Air gaps, reduced pressure principle assemblies (ASSE 1013) and reduced pressure detector assemblies (ASSE 1047) are allowed for every hazard, pressure and backflow condition.
Double check assemblies (ASSE 1015), double check detector assemblies (ASSE 1048) and dual checks (ASSE 1024) are limited to low hazard situations.
Atmospheric vacuum breakers are allowed only for back-siphonage with noncontinuous pressure, at least 6 inches above the flood rim or highest downstream point, with no valve downstream.
Pressure and spill-resistant vacuum breaker assemblies handle back-siphonage only and must be at least 12 inches above the flood rim or highest downstream outlet.
Testable assemblies must sit 12 inches to 7 feet above the access floor, with 18 inches below the ceiling, 4 inches at back and ends, and 24 inches in front.
Reading Table 382.41-1
The table has eight condition columns: backpressure or back-siphonage, each split into low or high hazard, each split into continuous or noncontinuous pressure. A device is acceptable only where the table marks an X. Footnote a limits a mark to campgrounds and marinas; footnote b limits it to a maximum of 10 feet of backpressure. The table was recreated by CR 26-019, effective September 1, 2026.
| Method, device or assembly (standard) | Backpressure, low hazard | Backpressure, high hazard | Back-siphonage, low hazard | Back-siphonage, high hazard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air gap (ASME A112.1.2), air gap fitting (A112.1.3) | All | All | All | All |
| Reduced pressure principle assembly (ASSE 1013 / CSA B64.4) and fire version (B64.4.1) | All | All | All | All |
| Reduced pressure detector assembly (ASSE 1047) | All | All | All | All |
| Double check assembly (ASSE 1015 / CSA B64.5) and fire version (B64.5.1) | All | - | All | - |
| Double check detector assembly (ASSE 1048) | All | - | All | - |
| Dual check (ASSE 1024 / CSA B64.6) | All | - | All | - |
| Intermediate atmospheric vent (ASSE 1012 / CSA B64.3) | All | - | All | - |
| Pressure vacuum breaker assembly (ASSE 1020 / CSA B64.1.2) | - | - | All | All |
| Spill-resistant vacuum breaker assembly (ASSE 1056 / CSA B64.1.3) | - | - | All | All |
| Barometric loop; vacuum breaker tee | - | - | All | All |
| Atmospheric vacuum breaker (ASSE 1001 / CSA B64.1.1) | - | - | Noncontinuous only | Noncontinuous only |
| Hose connection vacuum breakers (ASSE 1011, B64.2, B64.2.1, B64.2.2); hose connection backflow preventer (ASSE 1052) | Noncontinuous; continuous only at campgrounds and marinas; 10 ft max | Same | Noncontinuous; continuous only at campgrounds and marinas | Same |
"All" means every pressure condition in that hazard group.
Two quick rules: (1) for high hazard backpressure, only an air gap, RP or RPDA works; (2) for high hazard back-siphonage, add PVB, SVB, AVB (noncontinuous), barometric loop and vacuum breaker tee to that list.
Device limitations (SPS 382.41 (4))
| Device | Limitation |
|---|---|
| Atmospheric vacuum breaker | Bottom or critical level mark at least 6 inches above the flood rim, the highest downstream backpressure point and any injection port; 1 inch for deck-mounted AVBs. No control valve downstream (5) (h) |
| Pressure vacuum breaker assembly | At least 12 inches above the flood rim, highest downstream point and injection ports |
| Spill-resistant vacuum breaker assembly | At least 12 inches above the same points |
| Water-fed trap seal primer valve | At least 12 inches above the trap connection and highest downstream point |
| Hose connection vacuum breaker or backflow preventer | Only on the discharge side of a faucet or bibb; no more than 10 ft of backpressure; continuous pressure only at campgrounds and marinas |
| Freeze-resistant wall and yard hydrants | No more than 10 ft of backpressure |
| Intermediate atmospheric vent (ASSE 1012) | No more than 150 psig backpressure; may not serve boilers set above 15 psig steam or 30 psig water |
| RP, RPDA, DC, DCDA | Backpressure no more than twice the rated working pressure |
| RP or DC on fire systems, 2 inches or smaller | No test cock required on the number 1 control valve; RP may have a test outlet between check 2 and valve 2 |
| Hand-held shower | No more than 5 ft of backpressure |
| Laboratory faucet backflow preventer | No more than 6 ft of backpressure; no valve downstream |
| Device on an exterior hose bibb | May not defeat the frost-proof, self-draining feature |
Installation rules (SPS 382.41 (5))
- Install per the manufacturer and the code. Devices must be accessible for inspection, testing, maintenance and replacement, and protected from freezing.
- No device may be in an uninhabitable space subject to flooding, unless it has no vent port. A device with vent ports may never be in a pit, vault or depression below grade or floor, even one with a floor drain.
- Vent ports must face down or be shielded from debris, stay away from toxic fumes, drain dry, and discharge through an air gap.
- Inside a building, a PVB, RP or RPDA needs a drain or receptor for its vent-port discharge, with an air gap, and the discharge path may not create a nuisance. Local waste piping from a device must have a visible outlet, not inside a concealed space.
Clearances for testable assemblies (RP, RPDA, DC, DCDA, PVB, SVB):
| Dimension | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Access floor to lowest point of assembly | At least 12 inches, no more than 7 feet |
| Ceiling or obstruction to highest point | At least 18 inches |
| Wall to back and ends | At least 4 inches |
| Wall to front | At least 24 inches |
Barometric loop: rises at least 35 feet above the highest downstream backpressure point and the discharge point, with no potable outlets downstream of the peak. Vacuum breaker tee (for water treatment device drains): the bottom of the horizontal portion is at least 1 inch above the receptor rim, and the tee and its vent are at least the drain's inside diameter. Chemical dispensers need an individually connected fixture supply or a pressure-bleeding device that creates a visible free flow into the drain.
Worked selections
- Boiler with an automatic chemical feeder (high hazard, continuous, backpressure): an RP assembly or an air gap. A double check is not allowed.
- Lawn sprinkler zone with a fertilizer injector, fed from a valve that stays open (high hazard, continuous pressure, back-siphonage only because there is no pump or elevated outlet): a PVB at least 12 inches above the highest head and the injection port, or an RP.
- A low hazard process connection under continuous pressure with possible backpressure (the manufacturer specifies only nontoxic solutions): a double check assembly, dual check (ASSE 1024) or intermediate atmospheric vent device (ASSE 1012) satisfies the table, as would an RP or air gap. Footnote c reminds you to check SPS 384 for application-specific devices before choosing.
- Mop sink faucet in a public building (high hazard, noncontinuous after the faucet, back-siphonage): an AVB on the faucet at least 6 inches above the sink rim, with no valve downstream, or a hose connection vacuum breaker.
