7.1 Slides

Domain 1O for slides is a measurement chapter with a life-safety overlay. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Public Playground Safety Handbook, Publication 325 (July 2025) §5.3.6 is the narrative: types, platforms, chutes, exits, use zones, heat, and clothing entanglement. ASTM International F1487-21 and the NRPA Table of Dimensions (Rev 1/2024) — the sheet in the exam room — give the ages 2–5 and 5–12 numbers you will be scored on. Do not drop a CPSC toddler (6–23 months, ASTM F2373) row into an F1487 2–12 stem.

Children will descend a chute sitting, kneeling, standing, head-first, or in a pile. CPSC §5.3.6 tells owners to discourage those other positions. Your job on the audit is to make the hardware forgive a bad ride: a sitting transition, a wide enough bedway, a rounded exit, an empty use zone, and no clothing catch at the hood or along the sidewalls.

Types you must name on the field

  • Straight slide. An open chute that drops in one plane. The Table’s non-spiral numbers apply in full: 60-inch clear height above the bedway, 4-inch sidewalls, 11-inch exit region, 30-inch minimum radius of curvature.
  • Spiral slide. The chute wraps. Apply the same sidewall, slope, and exit rules where they still make geometric sense, then look for the spiral-only injury: lateral discharge off the open side. CPSC §5.3.6.3.3 limits toddlers and preschoolers to a short spiral — one 360° turn or less — because those children do not yet keep postural control through a long wrap.
  • Tube slide. An enclosed chute. Minimum interior diameter 23 inches. Provide barriers so children cannot climb or slide on the outside of the tube. Supervision is harder because the child disappears; that is a management note, not a substitute for the 23-inch interior.
  • Embankment slide. Built on grade. The chute bottom sits no more than 12 inches above the surrounding ground (NRPA Table: maximum chute-to-surfacing 12 inches). There is no transition platform — CPSC exempts embankments from the 14-inch platform rule. If the height of the chute above the surfacing is 12 inches or less, the Table does not require a slide use zone. Surfacing still has to match a minimum fall height of 40 inches. Provide something at the entrance that stops skateboards, skates, and bikes from using the slope as a ramp.
  • Roller slide. Same sidewall, slope, and exit rules, plus a crush/shear test: the gap between adjacent rollers, and between the roller ends and the stationary frame, must not admit the 0.19-inch (CPSC: less than 3/16 inch) probe. Missing rollers and seized bearings are a current finding even if the gap passed last year.

Transition platform (CPSC §5.3.6.2 and the Table)

Every slide that is not an embankment needs a horizontal transition platform so the child can go from standing to sitting before the bedway drops. The NRPA Table / F1487 depth is 14 inches minimum. CPSC adds a toddler-only 19-inch depth. The platform must be at least as wide as the chute, surrounded by the guardrail or barrier that the deck height requires (Chapter 6.2), and free of spaces or gaps between the deck and the chute start — that gap is the classic drawstring catch.

Handholds (except on a tube, where the tube rim is the hold) must reach high enough for the largest standing child and low enough for the smallest sitting child. A hood, guardrail, or other channeling device must put the child into a sitting posture before the slope. A missing hood is not a style choice; it is how a standing launch starts.

CPSC §5.3.6.3.4 adds slope language the Table does not print. For preschool- and school-age children the average incline is no more than 30° (height-to-length ratio 0.577), and no section may be steeper than 50°. Toddler averages cap at 24° with no section over 30°. Flat open chutes need 4-inch sides that are an integral part of the chute — no gap between sidewall and bedway (roller slides excepted). A curved-cross-section chute still has to produce a 4-inch vertical side when you lay the age-group width bar across the bedway (12 inches preschool, 16 inches school-age; CPSC also publishes an 8-inch toddler bar).

The exit region is where speed becomes a standing child. For ages 2–12 the Table wants at least 11 inches of exit, a 30-inch minimum radius into that region, rounded or curved lips, and an exit plane between 0 and –4°. Height of that lip above the surfacing: maximum 11 inches if the slide is 48 inches or lower; 7 to 15 inches if the slide is taller than 48 inches. A 10-foot wave slide that dumps a child 4 inches onto compacted mulch is an exit-height fail and a surfacing fail. CPSC’s toddler exit is a different row: 7 to 10 inches long if any portion of the chute exceeds 24°, no more than 6 inches above the surfacing, and at least an 18-inch radius — do not substitute those numbers on a 2–12 public slide.

Fall height for a slide, CPSC §5.3.6.6, is the distance from the transition platform to the protective surfacing. Embankments have no platform; carry the Table’s 40-inch minimum fall height instead.

Use zone, entanglement, heat, and tandem riding

CPSC §5.3.6.5 and the Table’s 72–96 inch exit band are the same rule in two units. Sides and access: 6 feet from the perimeter (that side band is not required for embankments or for slides already inside a composite’s 6-foot envelope — see §5.3.9). The exit use zone must not overlap any other equipment’s use zone; two slides may share exit surfacing only if their paths are parallel. Slides 6 feet or shorter: 72 inches of exit. Slides taller than 6 feet: exit length equals the slide height, up to 96 inches.

Entanglement is the life-safety finding on a slide. Hoods, the platform-to-chute junction, and sidewall fasteners have killed children when a hood drawstring or a jacket toggle caught and the child’s body kept going. CPSC §5.3.6.7: projections up to 3 inches in diameter must not stand more than 1/8 inch off the slide; there should be no gaps at the top where the chute meets the platform. Run the slide protrusion gauges from Appendix B.2.3 along the hood, the junction, and both sidewalls. The Table’s 21-inch side clearance is the non-entanglement zone beside the chute — a fence, shade-sail cable, or adjacent deck that crowds the bedway inside 21 inches is a clothing-catch geometry even if the fastener itself is flush. CPSC §5.3.6.8 extends the same entanglement rules to any other component whose primary foreseeable use is sliding.

Metal in sun is a burn hazard. CPSC §5.3.6 opens with it: do not use bare metal on platforms, chutes, or steps. Shade the metal or specify plastic or coated metal. A legal 14-inch platform on a south-facing steel chute can still hospitalize a child in seconds; write the heat finding even when every dimension passes.

Do not allow tandem sliding or a child in a caregiver’s lap. Extra mass raises exit speed into a use zone sized for one rider, and the lap-held child is crushed or ejected. That is a supervision and signage control, not a tape measurement, but the exam will pair it with the hardware rules.

Walk Domain 1O for slides in this order:
