How you actually become a CPSI

NRPA's become-a-cpsi page is unambiguous: to become a CPSI, you must successfully pass the CPSI exam. The course is a preparation path, not a substitute for the exam and not an eligibility gate. Candidates are highly encouraged to take a course for initial certification. Encouraged is not required. A self-studying candidate who is 18 or older may register for the computer-based exam only, sit at a PSI center, and earn the same credential as the person who spent two days in a host classroom.

That distinction matters because unofficial blogs still describe the course as mandatory, and because some agencies will only reimburse tuition if you pick a particular host. Agency policy can be stricter than NRPA policy. NRPA policy is what the exam and this study guide follow.

Three official pathways

In-person course and paper-and-pencil exam. The classroom portion is a two-day training conducted by CPSI instructors. The proctored paper-and-pencil examination is hosted on the morning of Day 3. The course walks ASTM public-playground standards through the full safety-inspection process: design, audit, inspection, maintenance, and risk management. Exam results for this form are provided approximately four to six weeks after administration. Latin American Spanish is available on request. The in-person course awards 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) (0.8 Group A and 0.7 Group B if you later use those units on a recertification application).

Online blended learning course and computer-based exam. This path combines the CPSI Online Learning Course, a live virtual instructor session, and the computer-based exam. You must finish the entire online course at least 24 hours before the virtual session. The live piece is a four-hour Zoom meeting that applies ASTM standards and CPSC guidelines to real playground environments. After that, you schedule the computer-based exam at a nearby PSI facility. Results appear on-site when you finish. This path also awards 1.5 CEUs.

Computer-based examination only. The CBT form is administered through PSI and is available at test centers across the United States and internationally. Applicants have 90 days from the time of registration to take the exam. NRPA still highly encourages the in-person course, the blended course, or the separate CPSI online prep course before you sit. Results are on-site. Spanish is available on request.

The 90-day clock is a common failure point. The store listing warns that after you submit a completed application and fee, it takes 3–5 business days for NRPA to process the file and send it to the testing company. You get a payment receipt immediately, but the email that actually lets you schedule does not arrive for several business days. Do not treat the payment timestamp as day one of a seat you can book that afternoon. If you let the 90-day window expire, you forfeit the fee and you reapply. NRPA will grant a 30-day exam-period extension if you file the extension application and fee before the current exam expiration date, you do not have a locked session you cannot move, and you have not already used your one extension. A serious health condition or extreme personal emergency can support an extension with a fee waiver, but only with official documentation and only if you file before the window closes.

Published fees — and the fees nobody should invent

Use the newest NRPA-published numbers. Do not average host flyers. Do not recycle a 2023 blog.

The online prep course is a convenience product. NRPA's resources page states that the exam and the book set (Course Manual and Field Guide) are not included. To receive the book set you register for an in-person or virtual course on the course calendar. ASTM standards are purchased from ASTM, not bundled into the prep course.

Host course-plus-exam prices vary by chapter, park district, and contractor. One host may include lunch and a probe kit. Another may charge a materials fee on top of tuition. Do not invent a single national course price. If a practice question asks what "the" CPSI course costs, the defensible answer is that host prices vary and the only nationally published exam-only figure is the store's $200 / $200 CBT application.

The CBT application fee is non-refundable. The store also warns that the person logged into the store is the person being registered; buying the exam for a colleague requires a call to NRPA customer service. No-shows and failing scores are not refunded and are not rolled to the next administration. You file a new application and pay again.

Scheduling and test-day rules at PSI

Schedule at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/nrpa. First-time users create a PSI account, confirm the contact information that must match the name on the NRPA application, pick Test Center delivery, and search by city or postal code. You will receive a booking summary with directions, identification rules, and test-day instructions. Read that email. The handbook's rules are not optional courtesy notes.

Arrive on time. Report no later than the scheduled testing time. A candidate who arrives more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted. That is a hard cutoff, not a plea to the proctor. Build a buffer for parking, a locked building, and the locker process.

Bring the right identification. You need one valid government-issued ID with photo and signature. Acceptable forms are a current driver's license, a current state identification card, a current passport, or a current military identification card. Employment badges, student cards, and temporary IDs are not acceptable. The name on the ID must match the name on the NRPA application. You will also sign a roster. If the names do not match, you do not test and you do not get the fee back.

Travel light. No personal items, valuables, or weapons. Wallets and keys go in a soft locker that stays with you but is locked by the proctor. Watches, hats, phones, and notes stay out of the testing room. If a phone is seen or heard after the exam starts, you are dismissed and the sitting is forfeited. PSI monitors the room with audio and video. You get a pencil and one piece of scratch paper at a time; the scratch paper goes back to the proctor or you do not receive a score report. Eating, drinking, and smoking are not permitted in the assessment center.

English as a Second Language (ESL) extra time is +60 minutes after NRPA approves the ESL Request Form. The form must be submitted to NRPA at least 45 calendar days before the examination and requires a supervisor, professor, or human-resources signature plus the published extra fee. A separate request lets you use a strict word-to-word paper translation dictionary (no electronic dictionaries). Unless you also requested the time extension, the dictionary does not add minutes; you still have the standard two hours. Disability accommodations follow the Americans with Disabilities Act process: the 8/18/2025 handbook says the request goes in writing at the time of exam registration through the form on NRPA's CPSI resources-and-links page, and recommends filing 45 days before the exam. (Older handbook editions told candidates to phone PSI instead; use the current form.)

One free reschedule is allowed if you call PSI at least one full business day before the scheduled session. The handbook's example is specific: if the exam is on Monday, you must contact PSI by 3:00 p.m. Central on the previous Thursday. Call PSI directly at 1-833-518-7455; do not assume an email to NRPA counts. Miss that deadline and you forfeit the application and all fees. You then file a new application to sit again.

Appeals go in writing to the CPSI Certification Committee in care of NRPA on the CPSI Appeal Application. The written appeal must be received within 60 days of the examination date. The committee reviews appeals at its quarterly meeting and then sends a decision letter. An appeal is not a free retake and it is not a place to argue that the unpublished cut score should have been 70 percent.

Inclement weather rarely cancels a sitting if the test center can open. Check PSI's site the morning of the exam. If NRPA and PSI do cancel the center, they contact scheduled candidates about a new date or reapplication steps.

Scenario: a candidate pays the $200 exam fee on a Friday, assumes the 90-day clock started at checkout, and tries to book a Saturday seat for a trip next weekend. The scheduling email has not arrived because processing takes 3–5 business days. That candidate has not missed the 90-day window yet, but they have missed the trip. Build processing time into any travel plan, and never treat a host's course tuition as the national exam fee.
