How to Register and What to Expect

Understanding the registration process and exam day procedures will help reduce anxiety and ensure you're fully prepared when test day arrives.

Step 1: Complete Your Training

Before you can register for the exam:

1. Complete your cosmetology program at a state-approved school
2. Accumulate required hours (varies by state: 1,000-1,600 hours)
3. Obtain documentation of completed training from your school

Step 2: Apply to Your State Board

1. Submit application to your state cosmetology board
2. Pay application fee (typically $25-$100)
3. Complete background check if required
4. Wait for approval (processing time varies)

Step 3: Register with PSI

Once your state board approves your application:

1. Create a PSI account at test-takers.psiexams.com
2. Receive eligibility notification from PSI (email or mail)
3. Pay examination fee (typically $65-$150 per exam)
4. Schedule your exam at an available testing center

Important Update (2026): As of March 31, 2025, PSI no longer accepts applications via mail, fax, or email. All applications must be submitted online.

What to Bring on Exam Day

Required Identification

You MUST bring valid government-issued photo ID:

• Driver's license
• State ID card
• Passport
• Military ID

ID Requirements:

• Must be current (not expired)
• Must include your photo
• Must include your signature
• Name must EXACTLY match your registration

For the Written (Theory) Exam

Not Allowed:

• Cell phones or electronic devices
• Study materials or notes
• Food or drinks
• Personal items (stored in locker)

For the Practical Exam

Testing Center Rules

Written Exam Environment

• Computer-based testing at PSI center
• Individual testing station
• Noise-canceling headphones available
• No breaks during 90-minute exam
• Raise hand to speak with proctor

Practical Exam Environment

• Designated testing facility
• Scripted, timed format
• Proctored by trained examiners
• Must follow exact sequence of tasks
• Continuous sanitation required

Scoring and Results

Written Exam

• Scaled scoring (0-100 scale)
• Passing score: 75 in most states (some use 70 or 80)
• Preliminary results: Immediately after testing
• Official results: Within 2-5 business days

Practical Exam

• Pass/Fail on each task
• Critical violations = automatic fail for that skill
• Results timeline varies by state
