Cover chapters 4 (Effective Communication) and 5 (The Teaching Process). Drill the 4-step teaching method (preparation, presentation, application, assessment) and teaching methods including telling-and-doing.

Can You Take the FAA FOI Exam?

Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements

Minimum age 16 to take the FOI knowledge test (FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix); must be at least 18 to be issued a ground instructor certificate (14 CFR 61.213(a)(1)) or a flight instructor certificate (14 CFR 61.183(a))
Education
No degree requirement
Experience
No flight experience, pilot certificate, or medical certificate required to take the FOI
Additional Requirements
  • Must obtain an FAA Tracking Number (FTN) via IACRA before scheduling
  • Must present an instructor endorsement or a certificated pilot school graduation certificate as authorization to take the FOI (effective September 1, 2024)
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Exempt from the FOI knowledge test under 14 CFR 61.213(b) and 61.183(e) if the applicant already holds an instructor certificate, holds a current teacher's certificate authorizing teaching at the 7th grade level or higher, or is employed as a teacher at an accredited college or university

Retake Policy

After failing, you must receive additional instruction and an endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying proficiency before retesting. There is no mandatory calendar waiting period, but you must pay the $175 fee again for each attempt.

Prerequisites: Minimum age 16 to take the knowledge test (FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix). Since September 1, 2024 the FOI also requires an authorization to test: either a certificate of graduation from an FAA certificated pilot school (14 CFR 61.71(a)) or a logbook endorsement from an authorized ground or flight instructor certifying completion of an applicable ground training or home study course and readiness for the test. Required as a prerequisite for the AGI, IGI, BGI, CFI, CFII, and MEI certificates unless exempt under 14 CFR 61.183(e) or 61.213(b) (holds an instructor certificate, holds a current state/county/city/municipal teacher's certificate authorizing teaching at the 7th grade level or higher, or is employed as a teacher at an accredited college or university)
Valid for: FOI knowledge test results are valid for 24 calendar months for use toward an instructor certificate; once an instructor certificate is issued the FOI does not need to be retaken for additional instructor ratings
