7.6 Emotions, Personality & Social Behaviour
Key Takeaways
- Emotional states normally take estar while personality traits take ser: está triste versus es alegre.
- Emotion verbs often use the reverse construction: me molesta, me preocupa, me sorprende, me da miedo.
- Verbs of emotional change are pronominal: enfadarse, alegrarse, preocuparse, aburrirse, sorprenderse.
- Expressions of emotion trigger the subjunctive in a que clause: me alegra que hayas venido.
- Politeness formulas such as no se preocupe, con mucho gusto, and lo siento mucho are the backbone of rejoinder answers.
7.6 Emotions, Personality & Social Behaviour
Two of the exam's question types depend directly on this field: Part C items that ask about the narrator's or author's attitude, and Section I rejoinders that respond to good news, bad news, an apology, or an offer. Both reward precision about feeling words.
1. Emotional States (normally with estar)
| Spanish | English | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| contento/a | happy, pleased | triste | sad |
| alegre | cheerful | deprimido/a | depressed |
| emocionado/a | excited, moved | decepcionado/a | disappointed |
| enfadado/a / enojado/a | angry (Spain / LatAm) | molesto/a | annoyed |
| preocupado/a | worried | aliviado/a | relieved |
| nervioso/a | nervous | tranquilo/a | calm |
| asustado/a | frightened | sorprendido/a | surprised |
| avergonzado/a | embarrassed | orgulloso/a | proud |
| harto/a (de) | fed up (with) | agradecido/a | grateful |
| confundido/a | confused | ilusionado/a | excited, hopeful |
Remember the false friend: embarazada means pregnant. Embarrassment is avergonzado/a or tener vergüenza.
2. Personality Traits (normally with ser)
| Spanish | English | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| amable | kind | antipático/a | unpleasant |
| simpático/a | likeable, nice | grosero/a | rude |
| generoso/a | generous | tacaño/a | stingy |
| trabajador/a | hardworking | perezoso/a / vago/a | lazy |
| honrado/a | honest | mentiroso/a | untruthful |
| valiente | brave | cobarde | cowardly |
| tímido/a | shy | atrevido/a | bold |
| paciente | patient | exigente | demanding |
| sensato/a | sensible | terco/a / testarudo/a | stubborn |
| culto/a | cultured, well-read | ingenuo/a | naive |
| comprensivo/a | understanding | egoísta | selfish |
Two false friends in this list. Sensible means sensitive, not sensible (that is sensato). Simpático means likeable, not sympathetic (that is compasivo).
3. Emotion Verbs of Reverse Construction
Many emotions are expressed with the gustar pattern from Chapter 3, so the verb agrees with the cause and the person takes an indirect pronoun.
| Verb | Example |
|---|---|
| molestar | Me molestan los ruidos. |
| preocupar | Nos preocupa la situación. |
| sorprender | Le sorprendió la noticia. |
| dar miedo / pena / vergüenza / rabia | Me da miedo volar. |
| importar | No me importa esperar. |
| alegrar | Nos alegra tu decisión. |
| fastidiar | Me fastidia la impuntualidad. |
Pronominal Counterparts
The same feelings can be expressed with a pronominal verb, where the person becomes the subject:
| Reverse construction | Pronominal equivalent |
|---|---|
| Me preocupa el examen. | Me preocupo por el examen. |
| Me alegra la noticia. | Me alegro de la noticia. |
| Me sorprende su reacción. | Me sorprendo de su reacción. |
| Me molesta el ruido. | Me molesto por el ruido. |
Notice the preposition each pronominal verb governs: preocuparse por, alegrarse de, sorprenderse de, enfadarse con (a person) or por (a cause), quejarse de.
4. Emotion Triggers the Subjunctive
Any expression of emotion followed by que and a different subject requires the subjunctive.
- Me alegro de que hayas venido.
- Es una lástima que no puedan asistir.
- Siento mucho que estés enferma.
- Nos sorprende que todavía no hayan respondido.
With the same subject, use the infinitive: Me alegro de verte, not Me alegro de que te veo.
5. Social Formulas: the Rejoinder Toolkit
Section I rejoinders very often present a social move rather than a question. The correct response is a fixed formula.
| Prompt type | Typical prompt | Expected response |
|---|---|---|
| Apology | Siento mucho la demora. | No te preocupes. / No pasa nada. / No importa. |
| Thanks | Muchas gracias por todo. | De nada. / No hay de qué. / Con mucho gusto. |
| Good news | ¡Me han dado la beca! | ¡Enhorabuena! / ¡Felicidades! / ¡Cuánto me alegro! |
| Bad news | Mi abuelo está en el hospital. | Lo siento mucho. / ¡Cuánto lo siento! / Que se mejore. |
| Offer | ¿Le ayudo con el equipaje? | Sí, por favor. / No, gracias, puedo yo. |
| Invitation | ¿Te apetece ir al cine? | Me encantaría. / Lo siento, no puedo. |
| Farewell wish | ¡Que tengas buen viaje! | Igualmente. / Gracias, lo mismo digo. |
| Compliment | Qué bien te queda ese abrigo. | Muchas gracias, muy amable. |
| Request | ¿Le importaría cerrar la ventana? | En absoluto. / Claro que no. |
Two subtleties. ¿Le importaría...? asks whether you would mind, so the cooperative answer is a negative: En absoluto or Claro que no means "not at all, I'll do it." And Que + subjunctive is a standard good-wish formula: Que te mejores, Que tengas suerte, Que descanses.
6. Describing Tone in Part C
Inference questions supply a tone word in the options. Know the set:
objetivo, neutral, crítico, irónico, sarcástico, nostálgico, melancólico, entusiasta, esperanzado, resignado, admirativo, escéptico, alarmista, humorístico, solemne
And the purpose set: informar, persuadir, advertir (to warn), criticar, elogiar (to praise), analizar, denunciar, entretener.
A passage that names a problem and then urges action is advertir or denunciar, not criticar — the distinction is whether the target is a situation or a person.
7. Worked Items
Item 1. Después de esperar dos horas, los pasajeros estaban muy ________ con la aerolínea. (A) simpáticos (B) molestos (C) embarazados (D) sensatos
Reasoning: Annoyance after a delay is molesto; embarazado is the pregnancy false friend. (B).
Item 2. A la directora ________ que el informe no estuviera terminado a tiempo. (A) molestó (B) molestaron (C) se molestó (D) molestaba de
Reasoning: Reverse construction: the subject is the singular subordinate clause, so the verb is third-person singular. (A).
Item 3. — ¡He aprobado el examen de conducir! — ________ (A) Lo siento mucho. (B) No pasa nada. (C) ¡Enhorabuena! (D) Igualmente.
Reasoning: Good news calls for congratulation. (C).
A speaker says: "Siento muchísimo llegar tarde; había un atasco enorme en la autopista." Which reply is the appropriate rejoinder?
Complete the sentence: "A los vecinos ________ mucho los ruidos de la obra que empezó la semana pasada."
Which sentence pairs ser and estar correctly with a trait and a state?
