3.3 The Many Uses of Se
Key Takeaways
- Se has six distinct jobs: reflexive, reciprocal, substitute for le/les, pronominal-verb marker, impersonal/passive, and the accidental construction.
- Impersonal se takes a singular verb with no stated subject: se vive bien aquí, se prohíbe fumar.
- Passive se agrees with the thing acted on: se vende una casa, se venden casas.
- The accidental se puts blame on circumstance: se me olvidaron las llaves, where the lost item is the subject.
- Se replaces le or les only before a third-person direct object pronoun: se lo di, never le lo di.
3.3 The Many Uses of Se
Se is two letters doing six jobs. Because CLEP items rarely announce which job is in play, the productive skill is diagnosis: look at what follows the verb, and the function reveals itself.
1. The Six Functions at a Glance
| Function | Test | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Reflexive | Subject acts on itself | Se lava las manos. |
| 2. Reciprocal | Plural subject, "each other" | Se abrazaron. |
| 3. Substitute for le/les | Followed by lo, la, los, las | Se lo di. |
| 4. Pronominal verb marker | Verb changes meaning | irse, dormirse, acordarse |
| 5. Impersonal / passive | No agent expressed | Se habla español. |
| 6. Accidental / unplanned | se + indirect pronoun + verb | Se me rompió el vaso. |
2. Reflexive and Reciprocal Se
Reflexive: subject and object are the same entity.
- Ana se viste antes de desayunar.
- With body parts, use the definite article: Se cepilla los dientes.
Reciprocal: only with plural subjects, meaning each other.
- Los dos hermanos se escriben cada semana.
- Ambiguity between reflexive and reciprocal is resolved with a phrase: se miraron el uno al otro (each other) versus se miraron a sí mismos (themselves, in a mirror).
3. Se as a Substitute for Le / Les
When an indirect le or les would collide with a direct lo, la, los, las, the indirect form becomes se.
- Le di el libro. -> Se lo di. (never le lo di)
- Les mandé las cartas. -> Se las mandé.
This se has nothing to do with reflexivity. Diagnose it by what follows: a third-person direct object pronoun immediately after se means substitution.
4. Pronominal Verbs: When Se Changes the Meaning
Some verbs shift meaning entirely with the pronoun attached.
| Plain verb | Pronominal verb |
|---|---|
| ir (to go) | irse (to leave, go away) |
| dormir (to sleep) | dormirse (to fall asleep) |
| poner (to put) | ponerse (to put on; to become) |
| acordar (to agree) | acordarse de (to remember) |
| quedar (to remain, arrange) | quedarse (to stay) |
| volver (to return) | volverse (to turn around; to become) |
| llevar (to carry) | llevarse (to take away; to get along) |
| parecer (to seem) | parecerse a (to resemble) |
| negar (to deny) | negarse a (to refuse) |
| despedir (to fire) | despedirse de (to say goodbye) |
Me voy (I am leaving) and Voy (I am going) are not stylistic variants. Part A exploits the difference.
Verbs of Becoming
Spanish has no single verb for to become; the choice encodes the kind of change.
- ponerse + adjective — temporary physical or emotional shift: Se puso rojo.
- volverse + adjective — involuntary, lasting change: Se volvió muy desconfiado.
- hacerse + noun/adjective — change achieved by effort: Se hizo abogado.
- llegar a ser — culmination of a long process: Llegó a ser director.
- convertirse en + noun — transformation: La oruga se convirtió en mariposa.
5. Impersonal Se versus Passive Se
This pair produces the highest-frequency se item on the exam, and the distinction is settled by agreement.
Impersonal se — always singular
No subject at all; the sense is one, people, you in general. Used with intransitive verbs, with ser, or with a personal direct object marked by a.
- Se vive bien en esta ciudad. (One lives well here.)
- Se prohíbe fumar.
- Se trata de un problema antiguo.
- Se ayuda a los estudiantes nuevos. (personal a blocks agreement)
Passive se — agrees with the thing
A transitive verb with a non-personal grammatical subject. The verb agrees with that subject.
- Se vende una casa. / Se venden casas.
- Se necesita un intérprete. / Se necesitan intérpretes.
- Se publicó el informe. / Se publicaron los informes.
Decision procedure: find the noun after the verb. If it is a plural non-person, the verb is plural. If there is no noun, or the noun is a person marked by a, the verb is singular.
6. The Accidental Se
Spanish has a dedicated structure for events that happen to someone rather than because of them.
Frame: se + indirect object pronoun + verb + subject
Se me olvidaron las llaves.
^ ^ ^ ^
se to me agrees grammatical
with --> SUBJECT (plural)
| Sentence | Literal sense | Idiomatic English |
|---|---|---|
| Se me olvidó el pasaporte. | The passport forgot itself on me. | I forgot my passport. |
| Se nos rompieron dos platos. | Two plates broke on us. | We broke two plates. |
| Se le perdió la cartera. | The wallet got lost on him. | He lost his wallet. |
| Se me acabó la tinta. | The ink ran out on me. | I ran out of ink. |
| Se les cayeron los libros. | The books fell on them. | They dropped the books. |
Common verbs in this frame: olvidar, perder, romper, caer, acabar, quemar, ocurrir, escapar.
The agreement trap. The verb agrees with the thing, not the person. Se me olvidaron las llaves (plural llaves) versus Se me olvidó la llave. The indirect pronoun me never affects the verb.
7. Worked Items
Item 1. En esa panadería ________ los mejores pasteles de la ciudad. (A) se vende (B) se venden (C) se vendo (D) se vendía
Reasoning: Los mejores pasteles is a plural non-personal subject, so passive se agrees in the plural, and the surrounding present-tense frame rules out the imperfect. (B).
Item 2. Antes de salir de casa ________ olvidaron los documentos importantes. (A) me se (B) se me (C) se yo (D) a mí
Reasoning: The accidental frame is se + indirect pronoun, in that fixed order. Me se is a well-known nonstandard inversion. (B).
Item 3. En este país ________ mucho de política durante las elecciones. (A) se hablan (B) se habla (C) hablan se (D) se hablo
Reasoning: Hablar de is intransitive here with no grammatical subject, so this is impersonal se and stays singular. (B).
