4.2 Verb + Preposition Regimes

Key Takeaways

  • Many Spanish verbs govern a fixed preposition that English does not predict: soñar con, contar con, insistir en, casarse con.
  • Verbs of beginning, learning, and motion take a before an infinitive: empezar a, aprender a, ir a, volver a.
  • Verbs of remembering, forgetting, realizing, and trying take de: acordarse de, olvidarse de, darse cuenta de, tratar de.
  • Some Spanish verbs take no preposition where English requires one: buscar algo, esperar algo, pedir algo, escuchar algo.
  • Adding de before que when the verb does not govern it produces dequeísmo; omitting a required de produces queísmo.

4.2 Verb + Preposition Regimes

A verb's regime is the preposition it demands before its complement. Regimes are arbitrary — they follow no rule you can derive — and they almost never match English. That combination makes them ideal Part A material: a single blank, four prepositions, no context clues beyond the verb itself.

The efficient approach is to learn verbs in groups by preposition, so that recognizing the verb retrieves the preposition automatically.

1. Verbs Governing A

Typically verbs of beginning, motion, teaching, learning, and helping.

Verb + aMeaningExample
empezar / comenzar ato begin toEmpezó a llover.

Contrast to memorize: pensar en = to think about; pensar de = to have an opinion of (¿Qué piensas de la película?); pensar + infinitive with no preposition = to intend (Pienso salir mañana).

4. Verbs Governing Con or Por

VerbMeaningExample
soñar conto dream ofSueño con viajar a Perú.
contar conto count onCuento contigo.
casarse conto marrySe casó con una arquitecta.
encontrarse conto run intoMe encontré con Ana.

5. Verbs That Take No Preposition (the English Trap)

English supplies a preposition; Spanish does not. Every one of these is a proven distractor.

SpanishEnglishExample
buscarto look forBusco un apartamento.
esperarto wait forEspero el autobús.
pedirto ask forPidió la cuenta.
escucharto listen toEscucho la radio.
mirarto look atMiraba el cuadro.
pagarto pay forPagó la comida.
agradecerto be grateful forLe agradezco su ayuda.
aprovecharto take advantage ofAprovechó la oferta.

Remember that these verbs still take the personal a with human direct objects: Busco a mi hermano, Escucho a la profesora. That a marks a person, not a regime.

6. Dequeísmo and Queísmo

Two mirror-image errors, both tested.

ErrorWhat happensWrongRight
Dequeísmode inserted where the verb governs nonePienso de que vendrá.Pienso que vendrá.
Queísmorequired de omittedMe di cuenta que era tarde.Me di cuenta de que era tarde.

Diagnostic: replace the clause with eso. If de eso sounds right, keep de; if plain eso sounds right, drop it.

  • Me di cuenta de eso -> de que. Correct.
  • Pienso eso -> que. No de.

Verbs that never take de que: pensar, creer, opinar, decir, saber, sospechar, temer. Verbs that require de que: darse cuenta, acordarse, olvidarse, enterarse, alegrarse, quejarse, estar seguro, tener miedo.

7. Worked Items

Item 1. El comité insistió ________ revisar el presupuesto antes de la votación. (A) de (B) en (C) por (D) a

Reasoning: Insistir governs en before both nouns and infinitives. (B).

Item 2. Todos los días, mi vecina espera ________ el autobús en la misma esquina. (A) por (B) a (C) para (D) (no preposition)

Reasoning: Esperar takes a direct object with no preposition; English wait for is the interference. (D).

Item 3. Nos alegramos mucho ________ que hayas conseguido el puesto. (A) (nothing) (B) de (C) en (D) por

Reasoning: Alegrarse requires de; omitting it would be queísmo. Note also that alegrarse de que triggers the subjunctive, which the sentence supplies with hayas conseguido. (B).
