9.2 Rejoinder Speech Acts: Catalogue & Practice Set
Key Takeaways
- Classifying the prompt's speech act narrows four spoken options to one before the choices finish playing.
- Wishes and good-luck formulas use que plus subjunctive and are answered with igualmente or lo mismo digo.
- Requests framed with le importaría are answered with a negative such as en absoluto, which means agreement.
- Echo distractors reuse a word from the prompt in an illogical frame and are the most common wrong answer.
- A response in the wrong register is wrong regardless of how sensible its content is.
9.2 Rejoinder Speech Acts: Catalogue & Practice Set
Section I gives you ten seconds after four spoken options. Under that constraint, comprehension is not enough — you need a classification reflex. Nearly every prompt belongs to one of twelve speech acts, and each act licenses a small family of responses.
How to drill this section. Read each item once, cover the options, and choose from memory. Reading them repeatedly trains a skill the exam does not test.
1. The Twelve Speech Acts
| # | Speech act | Prompt example | Licensed responses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Information question | ¿A qué hora sale el tren? | A time, and only a time |
| 2 | Yes/no question | ¿Ya entregaste el informe? | Sí/No + elaboration |
| 3 | Offer | ¿Le sirvo más café? | Acceptance or polite refusal |
| 4 | Invitation | ¿Te apetece ir al teatro? | Me encantaría / Lo siento, no puedo |
| 5 | Request | ¿Podría cerrar la ventana? | Claro / Por supuesto / En absoluto |
| 6 | Suggestion | ¿Por qué no cenamos fuera? | Agreement or counter-proposal |
| 7 | Apology | Perdona el retraso. | No te preocupes / No pasa nada |
| 8 | Thanks | Gracias por todo. | De nada / No hay de qué |
| 9 | Good news | ¡Me han ascendido! | ¡Enhorabuena! / ¡Cuánto me alegro! |
| 11 | Wish / farewell | ¡Que tengas buen viaje! | Igualmente / Gracias, lo mismo digo |
| 12 | Complaint | Este plato está frío. | Apology + remedy |
Three Acts That Trip People Up
Requests with importar. ¿Le importaría cerrar la ventana? literally asks "would it bother you." The cooperative answer is therefore negative: En absoluto, Claro que no, Para nada. A response of Sí, claro is logically a refusal, and item writers use exactly that as a distractor.
Wishes with que + subjunctive. Que te mejores, Que descanses, Que tengas suerte, Que aproveche (enjoy your meal). The reciprocal answer is Igualmente or Lo mismo digo. Note that Que aproveche is said to someone eating; the eater replies Gracias.
Offers with servir and poner. In a café, ¿Qué le pongo? means "what can I get you?" Answering with a description of the café rather than an order is the classic echo trap.
2. Elimination Heuristics, in Priority Order
- Answer type. Does the response supply what the question word demands? A ¿cuándo? prompt answered with a place is dead on arrival.
- Register. Formal prompt (le, su, usted, or señor/señora) requires a formal response. Any informal command or te/tu is out.
- Time frame. A prompt about tomorrow answered in the preterite is out.
- Echo. A response that repeats a salient noun from the prompt is more likely wrong than right.
- Pragmatic fit. Would a real person say this here? Criticism in response to an apology, or a personal opinion in response to a factual request, is out.
3. Practice Set (ten items)
(B). The prompt is an information question demanding a location. (A) describes the bus, (C) narrates the past, (D) states a preference. All three are echo traps built on autobús.
2. — Siento mucho lo de tu abuela. Me enteré ayer. (B) ¡Enhorabuena! Estamos todos contentísimos. (C) Sí, mi abuela cocina muy bien. (D) No te preocupes, yo tampoco lo sabía.
(A). Condolence calls for thanks and acknowledgement. (B) reverses the emotional valence; (C) misses the register entirely; (D) treats condolence as an apology.
(A) Sí, me importaría bastante.
(B). A negative answer signals cooperation. (A) is a literal refusal; (C) echoes televisión; (D) answers a question that was not asked.
(D) Lo siento, no puedo asistir.
(B). A good wish is answered with thanks. (A) supplies unrequested information; (C) answers thanks; (D) declines an invitation that was never made.
(B) El viernes me viene mejor, si a ti te da igual. (C) Sí, prefiero verte. (D) Porque tengo mucho trabajo esta semana.
(B). An alternative question requires choosing one option. (A) answers dónde, (C) answers a yes/no question, (D) answers por qué.
(A). Formal register, direct answer about status. (B) breaks register with an informal command; (C) echoes contrato; (D) inverts the hierarchy.
(A). In a café, ¿Qué le pongo? requests an order. (C) exploits the literal sense of poner; (D) reverses the direction of the command.
(B). A hedged factual answer fits an uncertainty question. Note that (B) is correct precisely because it admits uncertainty — a plausible-sounding hedge is often the key.
(A) La ensalada lleva tomate y lechuga fresca.
(B). A complaint requires acknowledgement plus remedy. (D) advances the meal without addressing the error.
(A). ¿Te importa? again inverts polarity: No, para nada grants permission. (B) is logically a refusal despite sounding cooperative; (D) contradicts the stated premise.
4. Scoring Your Drill
Count how many you answered correctly from a single reading. Eight or more suggests your Section I processing is already at test speed. Fewer than six means the bottleneck is comprehension speed, not strategy, and the remedy is daily listening rather than more elimination practice.
