5.4 The Complete Perfect System & Participles as Adjectives

Key Takeaways

  • All perfect tenses are haber plus an invariable past participle; the participle never agrees when it follows haber.
  • The future perfect (habrá llegado) expresses both future completion and present probability about the past.
  • The conditional perfect (habría llegado) expresses unrealized past results and pairs with si plus the pluperfect subjunctive.
  • The same participle agrees in gender and number when used as an adjective or with estar: la puerta está cerrada.
  • Nothing may be inserted between haber and the participle, so adverbs go before haber or after the participle.

5.4 The Complete Perfect System & Participles as Adjectives

Compound tenses look intimidating and are in fact the most mechanical part of Spanish morphology: one auxiliary, conjugated normally, plus one unchanging participle. What the exam tests is not the forms but which perfect a context requires, and whether the participle agrees.

1. The Building Blocks

Auxiliary: haber, conjugated in the required tense. Participle: -ar -> -ado; -er/-ir -> -ido.

Irregular Participles

VerbParticipleVerbParticiple
abrirabiertoponerpuesto
cubrircubiertoresolverresuelto
decirdichoromperroto
escribirescritovervisto
hacerhechovolvervuelto
morirmuertofreírfrito

Compounds inherit the irregularity: descubrir -> descubierto, devolver -> devuelto, componer -> compuesto, deshacer -> deshecho, describir -> descrito.

Participles that need a written accent to break a vowel cluster: leer -> leído, traer -> traído, oír -> oído, caer -> caído, creer -> creído.

2. The Six Indicative Perfects

TenseAuxiliary formExampleUse
Present perfecthe, has, ha, hemos, habéis, hanHe terminado.Past action with present relevance
Pluperfecthabía, habías, había...Había terminado.Past before another past
Future perfecthabré, habrás, habrá...Habré terminado. Will have finished; probability about the past
Conditional perfecthabría, habrías, habría...Habría terminado.Would have finished
Preterite perfecthube, hubiste, hubo...Hubo terminado.Literary only; after apenas, en cuanto
Perfect infinitivehaber + participledespués de haber terminadoNon-finite

Present Perfect: the Regional Split

In Spain the present perfect covers actions in a time period that includes now: Hoy he comido paella. Most of Latin America prefers the preterite there: Hoy comí paella. Both appear on the exam. Reliable triggers for the present perfect everywhere: ya, todavía no, alguna vez, nunca, últimamente, esta semana.

Future Perfect: Two Jobs

  1. Completion before a future point: Para el viernes ya habremos entregado el informe.
  2. Probability about a completed past event: ¿Dónde está Luis? — Habrá salido ya. (He has probably left.)

That second use mirrors the simple future's probability sense (Serán las cuatro = it is probably four). Both are tested.

Conditional Perfect: Two Jobs

  1. Unrealized past result, paired with si + pluperfect subjunctive: Si hubiéramos salido antes, habríamos llegado a tiempo.
  2. Probability about a past-in-the-past: Dijo que ya habrían terminado. (He said they had probably finished.)

3. The Rule That Generates Items: No Insertion

Nothing separates haber from its participle. Not adverbs, not pronouns, not negation.

CorrectIncorrect
Siempre he pensado eso. / He pensado siempre eso.He siempre pensado eso.
No lo he visto. He no lo visto.
¿Has terminado ya?¿Has ya terminado?

Object pronouns go before the auxiliary: Se lo he dicho, never He se lo dicho.

4. The Participle's Second Life: as an Adjective

After haber the participle is frozen. Everywhere else it behaves as a full adjective and agrees in gender and number.

FrameAgreementExample
haber + participlenoneHemos escrito las cartas.
estar + participle (resulting state)agreesLas cartas están escritas.
ser + participle (true passive)agreesLas cartas fueron escritas por el secretario.
Modifying a noun directlyagreesuna puerta cerrada, los platos rotos
tener + participle (accumulated result)agreesTengo hechos los ejercicios.

So: Hemos abierto las ventanas (no agreement, after haber) versus Las ventanas están abiertas (agreement, after estar). A Part A item pairing abierto and abiertas is deciding whether you can spot the auxiliary.

Estar + participle versus ser + participle

  • ser + participle describes the action being performed, normally with an agent: La ciudad fue destruida por el terremoto.
  • estar + participle describes the state that results: La ciudad está destruida.

5. Some Verbs Have Two Participles

A handful keep a regular participle for compound tenses and an irregular one for adjectival use:

VerbVerbal participle (with haber)Adjectival form
freírfreído / fritofrito (papas fritas)
imprimirimprimido / impresoimpreso (documento impreso)
soltarsoltadosuelto (dinero suelto)
despertardespertadodespierto (está despierto)
confundirconfundidoconfuso (un texto confuso)

6. Worked Items

Item 1. Para cuando llegue el inspector, ya ________ todos los documentos. (A) habíamos preparado (B) habremos preparado (C) hemos preparado (D) habríamos preparado

Reasoning: Para cuando llegue sets a future reference point, and the action completes before it: future perfect. (B).

Item 2. Cuando entramos en la sala, las ventanas ya estaban ________. (A) abierto (B) abiertos (C) abiertas (D) abrido

Reasoning: After estar, the participle agrees with the feminine plural ventanas, and abrir has the irregular participle abierto. (C).

Item 3. Si me lo hubieras dicho antes, yo ________ el problema esa misma tarde. (A) resolvería (B) habría resuelto (C) hubiera resuelto (D) resolví

Reasoning: A si clause with the pluperfect subjunctive takes the conditional perfect in the result clause, and resolver has the irregular participle resuelto. (B).
