10.3 Catching Details: Numbers, Schedules & Corrections
Main-idea questions reward general comprehension. Detail questions reward a note-taking system. This section builds that system and drills it against five realistic Section II scenarios.
1. The Note-Taking Discipline
Three rules, and only three:
- Digits, not words. Write 16:40, not dieciséis cuarenta. Converting to figures while listening is faster to read back and frees attention.
- One token per fact. vuelo 328 / QUI / B12 / +25 is four facts in eleven characters. Full sentences cost you the next fact.
- Strike, do not erase. When a speaker corrects a detail, cross out the old value and write the new one beside it. Erasing loses the trace of the change, which is sometimes itself the question.
2. Correction Signals
Spanish speakers flag revisions with a small set of expressions. Each one means the previously stated fact is now dead.

These small words carry the whole answer and are easy to miss at speed.

Scenario A — Airport Announcement
"Señores pasajeros del vuelo 447 con destino a Santiago de Chile: les informamos de que el embarque comenzará a las veintiuna horas y diez minutos por la puerta C4, en lugar de la puerta B9 anunciada anteriormente. Los pasajeros con equipaje de mano de gran tamaño deberán facturarlo en el mostrador 15 antes de las veinte cuarenta."

The paraphrase point: the audio says ya está completo; a question option will say no quedan plazas or el grupo está lleno. Match meaning, not words.
Scenario C — Weather Advisory
"Un frente atlántico dejará lluvias intensas en el noroeste desde la madrugada del sábado. Se esperan acumulaciones de hasta ochenta litros por metro cuadrado en zonas de montaña. Las temperaturas descenderán entre cinco y ocho grados. Se recomienda extremar la precaución en la autovía A-6, salvo en el tramo ya reabierto entre los kilómetros 120 y 140."

The scored detail here is salvo. A question asking which stretch is safe is answered by the exception, and a candidate who heard only "caution on the A-6" gets it wrong.
Scenario D — Museum Audio Guide
"Se encuentran ustedes ante el retablo mayor, tallado entre 1512 y 1524 por el maestro flamenco Cornelis de Holanda. La obra fue trasladada a esta capilla en el siglo XIX, tras el incendio que destruyó la nave original. Actualmente se halla en proceso de restauración, por lo que la iluminación es provisional."

Note that both answers are causal and both causes are marked by connectors (tras, por lo que). Causal connectors are where detail questions live.
Scenario E — Workplace Voicemail
"Hola Ana, soy Javier. Te llamo porque la reunión con los proveedores se ha aplazado del jueves al lunes siguiente, a la misma hora. Aprovecho para pedirte que traigas las cifras del segundo trimestre, no las del primero como habíamos dicho. Si no puedes, avísame antes del viernes."

Two corrections in four sentences (del jueves al lunes; no las del primero como habíamos dicho), plus one conditional deadline. This density is typical, and it is why notes must be tokens.
5. Self-Check
Work each scenario from a single reading, produce the note line, then answer the questions without looking back. If your notes cannot answer a question you got right, you were relying on memory — which will not survive test-day conditions.
An announcement states: "El embarque comenzará por la puerta C4, en lugar de la puerta B9 anunciada anteriormente." Which gate should passengers use?
A weather advisory says: "Se recomienda extremar la precaución en la autovía A-6, salvo en el tramo ya reabierto entre los kilómetros 120 y 140." What does this mean?
