Can You Take the New York Claims Adjuster Exam?

18 years or older at the time the license is issued (NY Insurance Law § 2108(c)(3))
Education
No prelicensing education required for independent adjusters; public adjusters must complete 40 hours of approved training or document one year of qualifying insurance experience
Background Check
Electronic fingerprinting via IdentoGO under § 2108(d)(2), compared against Division of Criminal Justice Services records and, where required, the FBI; a felony involving dishonesty or breach of trust requires written 18 U.S.C. § 1033(e) consent
Additional Requirements
  • Pass the New York Independent General Adjuster Series 17-70 examination administered by PSI (100 questions, 2 hours, 70% to pass)
  • Apply within two years of the passing exam score; the license fee is $50 per year or fraction of a year ($100 for a full two-year term)
  • No $1,000 surety bond is required — § 2108(l)(1) applies only to adjuster licenses other than an independent adjuster's license
  • No certificates of character are required — § 2108(d)(3) excepts applications for an independent adjuster license
  • No continuing education is required for independent adjuster renewal; licenses expire December 31 of even-numbered years
