Open-book is why people underestimate the M2, and it is why they fail it. The exam is not asking whether you can memorize IMC Table 403.3.1.1. It is asking whether you can find the controlling row, apply the occupancy footnotes, and still have 90 seconds left to read the exceptions. At 50 questions in 2 hours you have about 2.4 minutes per item. If your first minute is spent flipping at random, the remaining minute is not enough to finish a hood-clearance or pipe-sizing stem. This section exists so the books become tools instead of ballast.
What "open-book" means on an ICC exam
ICC's test-site rules are narrower than the hallway rumor. Any copyrighted, bound book may be used at the test site, but exam questions are written from the listed approved references, and an appeal can be based only on those listed references. Pearson VUE supplies a small dry-erase board and marker; that marker is only for the board. Writing in the codebook with the test-center marker is a discipline issue. How to tab the 2024 IFGC
The IFGC is the smaller book and the one candidates forget to open. That is expensive. Fuel-gas piping is not an IMC Chapter 6 problem.

Tab the table footnotes in IFGC 402, not just the table title. The footnote that changes specific gravity, pressure drop, or the longest-length rule is often the entire point of the item. Work those tables in 14.2 Pipe sizing.
Index versus table of contents versus footnotes
Use three different tools, in this order:
- Table of contents — when you already know the chapter ("this is a Type I hood, that is Chapter 5").
- Index — when you only have a keyword ("clothes dryer exhaust," "draft hood," "CSST").
- Section exceptions and table footnotes — after you land. Many M2 items are written so the main paragraph looks like option two and the exception is option three.
Do not stop on the first sentence that shares a noun with the stem. Read the charging paragraph, every exception, and the footnotes that modify the table row you just used. "Minimum" and "maximum," "shall not," and "unless otherwise approved" are the words ICC's own during-exam guidance tells you to watch.

Timed lookup drills (30 to 45 seconds)
Build a 20-item lookup list from the map. For each item, start with the book closed. Start a timer. Your target is 30 to 45 seconds from the keyword to your finger on the controlling section or table — not to a finished calculation, just to the landing. Then stop and read the exceptions.
A useful drill set: office outdoor-air rate; Type I hood overhang; dryer duct developed length; fire-damper rating in a 2-hour wall; indoor combustion-air volume; Type B vent termination to an opening; Schedule 40 natural-gas pipe at a stated length; appliance connector length; T&P discharge; machinery-room occupancy classification. If any of those takes more than 45 seconds, add a tab or rewrite the index note. Repeat the same list at the start of every study session until the landings are automatic.
Do not try to memorize table values as a substitute for navigation. The tables are long on purpose. Open-book exams put obscure rows and footnotes on the form because the job requires you to look them up under time pressure.
Exam traps that burn open-book candidates
Looking in the IMC for fuel-gas piping. Pipe diameter, longest-length sizing, and IFGC Table 402 are IFGC Chapter 4 problems. IMC Chapter 6 is ducts. Opening the wrong book costs a full minute and often produces a confident wrong answer.
Ignoring exceptions and footnotes. A main-section clearance that looks like 18 inches can be modified by an exception, a listed assembly, or a table note. The tested option is frequently the exception.
Bringing the wrong code year. Questions are written to the first printing of the cycle printed on your exam. A beautifully tabbed 2018 or 2021 set will not save a 2024 form, and you cannot appeal from an edition that is not on the approved list.
Confusing IMC Chapter 7 with IFGC 304. Both address combustion air. Use the code that governs the appliance and the installation in the stem. When in doubt, check both — but start with the map, not with hope.
