Mechanical combustion air is the method you use when gravity openings will not work — a buried mechanical room, a dirty industrial wall, a space where two 100-square-inch holes are not happening. 2024 IFGC 304.9 is short and heavily tested. Where all combustion air is provided by a mechanical air-supply system, the combustion air shall be supplied from the outdoors at a rate not less than 0.35 cubic feet per minute per 1,000 Btu/h of total input rating of all appliances located within the space.

Worked example — 200,000 Btu/h. 0.35 × (200,000 / 1,000) = 70 cfm from outdoors. Worked example — 400,000 Btu/h boiler. 0.35 × 400 = 140 cfm. Worked example — 80,000 + 40,000 + 199,000 = 319,000 Btu/h. 0.35 × 319 = 111.7 cfm. Round up on the fan, and confirm the nameplate inputs — do not use output Btu/h.

304.9.2 Appliance interlock. Each of the appliances served shall be interlocked with the mechanical air-supply system to prevent main-burner operation when the mechanical air-supply system is not in operation. A crank timer, a light switch, or “the maintenance guy turns the fan on first” is not an interlock. The burner circuit must be unable to open the gas valve unless the fan is running.

304.9.1 Makeup air. Where exhaust fans are installed, makeup air shall be provided to replace the exhausted air. That is a second airstream. A 70-cfm combustion-air fan does not replace a 2,000-cfm kitchen hood. Size makeup for the exhaust, then keep the 0.35 cfm/1,000 combustion-air rate.

304.9.3 Combined combustion air and ventilation air. Where combustion air is provided by the building’s mechanical ventilation system, the system shall provide the specified combustion-air rate in addition to the required ventilation air. You do not get to count the same 70 cfm as both Table 403 outdoor air and IFGC 304.9 combustion air. Add them.

Duct construction — the eight-item 304.11 list

Combustion-air ducts shall comply with all of the following:

  1. Galvanized steel complying with IMC Chapter 6, or a material of equivalent corrosion resistance, strength, and rigidity. Exception: inside dwelling units, unobstructed stud and joist spaces may convey combustion air if not more than one required fireblock is removed. Commercial M2 rooms almost never get that exception.
  2. Ducts shall terminate in an unobstructed space allowing free movement of combustion air to the appliances. A duct that dumps into a packed attic, a soffit stuffed with insulation, or a ceiling plenum full of boxes does not terminate in an unobstructed space.
  3. Ducts shall serve a single enclosure. One duct serving two mechanical rooms is a fail.
  4. Ducts shall not serve both upper and lower combustion-air openings where both openings are used. Keep the high and low paths separated all the way to the outdoor source.
  5. Ducts shall not be screened where terminating in an attic space. Attic screens clog with insulation and lint.
  6. Horizontal upper combustion-air ducts shall not slope downward toward the source of combustion air. Do not build a water trap in the high duct.
  7. The remaining space surrounding a chimney liner, gas vent, special gas vent, or plastic piping installed within a masonry, metal, or factory-built chimney shall not be used to supply combustion air. Exception: direct-vent gas-fired appliances designed for installation in a solid fuel-burning fireplace, installed per the manufacturer — the listed fireplace-insert path. A B-vent in a masonry chimney does not get to use the annulus as a combustion-air duct.
  8. Exterior combustion-air intake openings shall have the lowest side not less than 12 inches vertically from adjoining finished ground level. Snow, leaves, and splash block a grade-level hole.

Louvers, dampers, chemicals, and the IMC Chapter 7 split

304.10 again, because motorized louvers fail more jobs than fan cfm does. Nonmotorized louvers and grilles shall be fixed open. Motorized louvers shall be interlocked with the appliance so they are proven to be in the full-open position prior to main-burner ignition and during main-burner operation. Means shall prevent the main burner from igniting if the louvers fail to open at start-up, and shall shut down the main burner if the louvers close during operation. An end switch that is jumped out, a louver with no proof-of-open, or a “we’ll wire it Monday” note is a 304.10 fail.

IMC 701.2 is the oil/solid-fuel companion. Where combustion-air openings have volume, smoke, or fire dampers, the dampers shall be interlocked with the firing cycle of the appliances served so that no appliance that draws combustion air from the room can operate when any of those dampers are closed. Manual dampers shall not be installed in combustion-air ducts. Ducts without dampers that pass through rated construction shall be enclosed in a shaft in accordance with the IBC. Do not put a balancing damper in a combustion-air duct and call it a volume control.

304.12 Protection from fumes and gases. Where chemicals that generate corrosive or flammable products such as aerosol sprays are routinely used, and those chemicals can enter the combustion air, one of the following shall apply:

  1. Fired appliances shall be located in a mechanical room separate or partitioned off from other areas, with combustion and dilution air from outdoors.
  2. The appliances shall be direct vent and installed per the manufacturer.

A gas furnace sharing air with a beauty-supply stockroom, a pool-chemical room, or a parts washer is a heat-exchanger failure waiting for the first chlorine or refrigerant leak. Either build a dedicated outdoor-air room or specify direct-vent. That decision also has to respect the prohibited-location and clearance rules in appliance location, access, and clearances.

Book split, one more time, because M2 will mix fuels on one stem. Gas = IFGC 304 (and IFGC 301.1.1). Oil = IMC 701.1 → NFPA 31. Solid fuel = IMC 701.1 → manufacturer. IMC Chapter 7’s user note says the chapter is brief on purpose. Do not invent an IMC twin of the 50/4,000/3,000 tables for a gas appliance, and do not apply IFGC 304.5 to an oil boiler unless the stem actually sends you there.
