Chimney and vent connectors are about 6 percent of the M2 exam — the second half of the Chimneys and Vents domain after Type B, BW, L, and plastic vents. Read the fuel first. Gas Category I connectors live in IFGC 503.10. Oil, solid fuel, and pellet connectors live in IMC 803. Mixing the books is how a candidate “proves” a 6-inch Type B clearance on an oil chimney connector that Table 803.10.6 still wants at 18 inches or 9 inches.
Materials — Type B connector versus single-wall
503.10.2.1. A vent connector shall be noncombustible, corrosion-resistant, able to take the vent-gas temperature, and thick enough to resist physical damage.
503.10.2.3 Residential-type appliance connectors (not in an attic or other unconditioned space) for listed draft-hood appliances, conversion-burner draft-hood appliances, and Category I appliances may be Type B or L vent material; galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.018 inch; aluminum (1100 or 3003) not less than 0.027 inch; stainless steel not less than 0.012 inch; equivalent smooth-wall metal; or a listed vent connector. Vent connectors shall not be covered with insulation except listed insulated connectors installed to their instructions.
503.10.2.2 Unconditioned spaces. Where a draft-hood or Category I connector is located in or passes through an attic, crawl space, or other unconditioned space, that portion shall be listed Type B, Type L, or listed vent material with equivalent insulation. Exception: single-wall metal pipe within the exterior walls, in climates whose 99-percent winter design temperature is 5°F (−15°C) or higher, may be used in unconditioned spaces other than attics and crawl spaces. A single-wall connector that ducks through a cold attic to reach a chimney is a 503.10.2.2 fail even if the slope is perfect.

Slope, rise, length, joints, and support
Slope — 503.10.8 / IMC 803.10.5. Install the connector without dips or sags. Slope it upward toward the vent or chimney not less than 1/4 inch per foot (21 mm/m; IMC says 1/4 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal). Exception: a connector attached to a mechanical-draft system installed to the appliance and draft-system instructions. A 12-foot single-wall run that is dead-flat, or that sags into a low spot between hangers, is a 503.10.8 fail even if the total rise at the chimney is two inches. The 1/4-in-12 number is measured along the connector, not “it ended higher than it started.”
Length — 503.10.9 (confirmed 2024). Keep the connector as short and the appliance as close to the chimney or vent as practical. Maximum horizontal length of a single-wall connector: 75 percent of the height of the chimney or vent, except engineered systems. Maximum horizontal length of a Type B double-wall connector: 100 percent of that height, except engineered systems. IMC 803.10.2 publishes the same 75-percent single-wall cap for non-gas connectors. A 20-foot Type B stack with a 16-foot single-wall connector is over the 15-foot (0.75 × 20) cap. Swap to Type B connector material and the same 16-foot run is legal under 503.10.9 — it is still illegal if it sags, if it is concealed single-wall, or if Section 504 later cuts the length again.
When you size with the common-vent tables, 504.3.2 adds a second ruler: except as 504.3.3 allows a capacity reduction, maximum connector horizontal length is 1½ feet for each inch of connector diameter (Table 504.3.2: 4-inch connector = 6 feet; 6-inch = 9 feet). That table limit is not a substitute for 503.10.9. Both apply.
Joints — 503.10.6. Fasten joints between connector sections and connections to flue collars and draft-hood outlets by sheet metal screws, by assembling listed vent material to the manufacturers’ instructions, or by other approved means. IMC 803.10.1 is screws, rivets, or other approved means. 2024 does not publish a screw count. Inspectors still reject a slip joint held by gravity or tape; equally spaced screws around the circumference so the joint cannot rotate or pull apart is the field method that satisfies “fastened.” 503.6.14 still forbids screws that penetrate the inner wall of double-wall gas vent except at the appliance or single-wall-to-double-wall transition.
503.10.7. Where connectors join, use a tee or wye. Two pipes crimped into a hole in the side of a third pipe is not a fitting.
Support — 503.10.10 / IMC 803.10.1. Support the connector for the design and weight of the material so clearances stay honest and joints do not separate. A 14-foot single-wall run hung from two pieces of twine will sag into a 503.10.8 trap.
Chimney entrance — 503.10.11, 501.9 / IMC 801.12, 803.10.3. Enter a masonry flue not less than 12 inches above the lowest interior of the flue. Extend the connector to the inner face of the liner, not beyond, and cement a masonry connection in an approved manner. A thimble, if used, is permanently cemented and the connector is firmly attached so it cannot fall out or shoot across the flue and choke the opposite wall.
Access — 503.10.12. The entire length of a vent connector shall have ready access for inspection, cleaning, and replacement. A connector buried above a hard lid or inside a furred chase you cannot open fails 503.10.12 even if the product would have been legal Type B.

Two appliances on one connector or one chimney — 503.10.3.4, 503.10.4, IMC 803.7. A common connector or manifold sits at the highest level consistent with headroom and combustible clearance and is sized by Section 504 or engineering methods. Alternate method for two draft-hood appliances only: common connector area not less than the larger connector plus 50 percent of the smaller flue-collar outlet. Where two connectors enter a common vent or chimney, the smaller connector enters at the highest level. Openings into one flue are at different levels, or the connectors attach to the vertical vent at 45 degrees or less from vertical (503.10.4.1). 503.10.4 repeats the category rule: a Category I connector shall not join any portion of a mechanical-draft system operating under positive static pressure.
Dampers — 503.13 / 503.14 / IMC 803.5. A manually operated damper shall not be placed in the vent connector for any gas appliance. Fixed and balancing baffles are not manual dampers; a balancing baffle shall be listed to UL 378 and mechanically locked (503.13.1). An automatic vent damper shall be listed (503.14). IMC 803.5 allows a manual damper only in a chimney connector serving solid fuel. A bar-type damper from the wood-stove aisle, wired open “for inspection,” is still a 503.13 fail in Type B.
No floors, no concealed single-wall — 503.10.14, 503.7.4, 503.7.6, IMC 803.2 / 803.10.4. Single-wall metal pipe connectors shall not pass through any wall, floor, or ceiling except as 503.7.4 permits: a run directly from the appliance space through the roof or exterior wall to outdoors. Single-wall shall not originate in an unoccupied attic or concealed space.
