2024 IMC Chapter 2 defines construction documents as the written, graphic, and pictorial documents prepared or assembled to describe the design, location, and physical characteristics needed to obtain a building permit, drawn to an appropriate scale. IMC 106.1 requires those documents, plus engineering calculations, diagrams, and other data, in two or more sets — or digitally if the building official allows — with each permit application. The code official shall require a registered design professional where state law requires one, and may require additional sealed documents where special conditions exist. Documents shall be drawn to scale and clear enough to show the location, nature, and extent of the work and to show in detail that the work conforms to the IMC. Hood drawings tell you Type I versus Type II, overhang, exhaust rate, makeup-air arrangement, and whether a listed factory grease duct or a field-welded duct was permitted. Combustion-air notes tell you indoor, outdoor, or mechanical methods and the opening sizes the design professional claimed. A gas isometric is an IFGC document even when it is bound in the mechanical set: developed length, pressure, load in Btu/h or cfh, and pipe size have to support the connected load.
