504.1. Exhaust the dryer per the manufacturer’s instructions and convey moisture and any products of combustion to the outside of the building. Domestic construction — 504.9
504.9.1 Material and size. Exhaust ducts shall have a smooth interior finish and shall be constructed of metal not less than 0.016 inch (0.4 mm) thick. Nominal diameter is 4 inches (102 mm). Foil, vinyl, plastic, and corrugated flex as the concealed or developed duct fail this sentence. Smooth metal is the lint rule, not a preference.
504.9.2 Duct installation. Support at 4-foot (1219 mm) intervals and secure in place. The insert end of the duct shall extend into the adjoining duct or fitting in the direction of airflow. Ducts shall not be joined with screws or similar fasteners that protrude more than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) into the inside of the duct. Wall or ceiling cavities that enclose the duct shall allow installation without deformation. 504.4 adds the same fastener idea in stronger words: ducts shall not be connected or installed with sheet metal screws or other fasteners that will obstruct the exhaust flow. A #8 screw standing ½ inch into a 4-inch dryer duct is a lint hook and a fail, even if the joint is “tight.”
504.8 / 504.8.1. Where nails or screws from finish work are likely to hit the duct, and the duct is less than 1¼ inches from the finished face of framing, install No. 16 gage (0.0575 inch) steel shield plates that extend 2 inches above sole plates and below top plates.
504.9.3 Transition ducts. The appliance-to-duct connector is a single length, listed and labeled to UL 2158A, not greater than 8 feet (2438 mm), and not concealed within construction. Two pieces taped together, a 12-foot accordion, or a transition buried in a chase fail 504.9.3 even if the metal beyond it is perfect.
504.4 Exhaust installation. Terminate on the outside of the building with a backdraft damper. Screens shall not be installed at the termination. Do not connect a dryer duct to a vent connector, vent, or chimney. Do not extend the dryer duct into or through other ducts or plenums. Seal per 603.9. 504.4.2: the terminal passageway shall be undiminished and provide not less than 12.5 square inches (8065 mm²) of open area. 504.4.1 Termination location: follow the dryer manufacturer. If the instructions are silent, terminate not less than 3 feet (914 mm) in any direction from openings into buildings, including ventilated soffits. Pair that 3-foot dryer rule with 501.3.1 Item 3 (environmental-air exhaust 10 feet from mechanical air intakes). Domestic dryer exhaust is environmental air (Chapter 2).
504.2. Seal the annular space at a wall or ceiling membrane with noncombustible material, approved fire caulking, or a noncombustible dryer-exhaust wall receptacle. Dryer ducts shall not penetrate fireblocking, draftstops, or fire-resistance-rated assemblies unless the duct is galvanized steel or aluminum of 603.4 thickness and the rating is maintained. Fire dampers, combination fire/smoke dampers, and any similar devices that will obstruct the exhaust flow are prohibited in clothes-dryer exhaust ducts. 504.3: each vertical riser needs a cleanout.

A 40-foot developed metal run with two 90s is a 50-foot equivalent. It does not “almost” pass. 504.9.4.2 Manufacturer’s instructions is the second path: the make-and-model instructions set the length; give the code official a copy; if the duct will be concealed, deliver those instructions before concealment. 504.5 / 504.6. Domestic DEDPVs shall be listed and labeled to UL 705 for dryer-exhaust use and installed to the manufacturer’s instructions. Domestic booster fans shall not be installed in dryer exhaust systems. An in-line bath fan, a “booster” sold at a box store, or a field-built blower in a 50-foot vinyl run is 504.6, not 504.5. 504.9.5: if equivalent length exceeds 35 feet (the manufacturer or DEDPV path), identify that equivalent length on a permanent label or tag within 6 feet of the exhaust-duct connection.
Makeup air, commercial Type 2, and common shafts
504.7 Makeup air. Installations exhausting more than 200 cfm (0.09 m³/s) shall be provided with makeup air. A closet designed for a dryer needs an opening of not less than 100 square inches (0.0645 m²) or other approved makeup. Two 150 cfm domestic units sharing a room are 300 cfm — makeup is required even though each dryer looks “residential.” Multiple-dryer makeup is a 504.7 number, not a guess.
504.10 Commercial clothes dryers (Type 2). Follow the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions. Exhaust-fan motors shall be outside the airstream. In multiple installations, the fan shall operate continuously or be interlocked to operate when any individual unit is operating. Ducts shall have not less than 6 inches (152 mm) clearance to combustibles. Transition ducts are still a single length not exceeding 8 feet, listed to UL 2158A, and not concealed. Commercial length, gauge, and makeup beyond those sentences come from the listing — do not import 504.9.4.1’s 35 feet onto a Type 2 bank unless the manufacturer’s instructions say so.
504.11 Common exhaust in multistory structures (inspect the list, do not invent extras): IBC-rated shaft; no dampers in the exhaust duct; rigid metal in the shaft, 0.0187 inch (No. 26 gage) min, SMACNA, no offsets; fan motor per 503.2 and outside the airstream; fan continuous and on standby power; monitored with an audible or visual signal on failure; makeup air provided; 12 × 12 inch cleanout at the shaft base; no screens at the termination; the shaft serves only clothes dryers and is independent of other exhaust.
504.9.6. Where space for a dryer is provided, install the exhaust duct. If the dryer is not there at occupancy, cap the duct at the future connection. Condensing dryers listed and installed before occupancy are the exception.
