Installation is where the 4 percent Duct Construction & Installation task is actually failed. The metal can match SMACNA 006 and the flex can carry a Class 1 mark, and the job still fails if the trunk has no hangers, the return is unsealed, or the cooling insulation has no vapor retarder. 2024 IMC 603 and 604 are walk-through sections: you look up, you look at joints, and you look at penetrations.

Supports and hangers — SMACNA and the listing, not an IMC interval

2024 IMC 603.10: Ducts shall be supported in accordance with SMACNA 006. Flexible and other factory-made ducts shall be supported in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. That is the entire IMC hanger rule. The book does not say “every 8 feet” or “every 12 feet.” SMACNA 006 sets spacing by duct size, weight, and hanger type. The flex listing typically keeps supports close enough that the duct does not sag and choke airflow. Inventing a single IMC interval is how candidates miss the real test: is this run supported to the standard the code actually names?

Field fail — missing hangers. A 20-foot 20-by-12 trunk hung from two plumber’s straps, or a flexible air duct laid on the ceiling grid and pinched at every tee-bar, is a 603.10 fail. Straps that cut into flex, hangers attached to the wrong joist, and factory-made duct supported like shop-fab rectangular metal all miss the manufacturer’s instructions. 603.1’s “structural strength and durability” sentence backs the same correction notice.

603.11 is the furnace-connection companion: ducts connecting to a furnace shall have clearance to combustibles in accordance with the furnace manufacturer’s installation instructions. Pair that with 918 furnaces and the airtight return into the blower. 603.15: ducts exposed to mechanical damage by vehicles or other causes shall be protected by approved barriers. 603.16: ducts, linings, coverings, and vibration-isolation connectors on the exterior of the building shall be protected against the elements. A rooftop supply with torn jacket and no weather barrier is a 603.16 / 604.12 problem, not a “it still blows” approval.

Joints, seams, and the 2024 sealing rule — Seal Class A/B/C is SMACNA, not a 2024 IMC table

2024 IMC 603.9 is the sentence to tab. Longitudinal and transverse joints, seams, and connections in metallic and nonmetallic ducts shall be constructed as specified in SMACNA 006 and the NAIMA fibrous-glass standards. Those joints, seams, and connections shall be securely fastened and sealed with welds, gaskets, mastics (adhesives), mastic-plus-embedded-fabric systems, liquid sealants, or tapes. Duct connections to air-distribution-equipment flanges shall be sealed and mechanically fastened. Closure systems shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

The 2024 IMC does not contain Table 603.9 and does not assign Seal Class A, B, or C. Older editions used that table. Shop drawings will still show SMACNA seal classes because SMACNA 006 is the construction standard 603.4 and 603.9 reference:

  • Seal Class A — transverse joints, longitudinal seams, and duct-wall penetrations.
  • Seal Class B — transverse joints and longitudinal seams.
  • Seal Class C — transverse joints only.

Treat A/B/C as the SMACNA language on the approved drawings. The inspector’s 2024 IMC test is simpler: is every joint fastened and sealed with a listed closure, except where the 603.9 exception actually applies?

603.9 Exception: For ducts having a static pressure classification of less than 2 inches of water column, additional closure systems shall not be required for continuously welded joints and seams and locking-type joints and seams. This exception shall not apply to snaplock and button-lock joints and seams located outside of conditioned spaces. An unsealed snaplock return in a hot attic, or an unsealed button-lock outdoor wrap-around, does not get the exception. A continuously welded 1-inch-w.c. exhaust inside the building can.

Field fail — unsealed return plenum. The supply is painted with mastic and the return is left as raw snaplock “because it is negative.” 603.9 does not exempt returns. A ceiling-return plenum that was never sealed at the gypsum/deck intersection, or a furnace-closet used as a return without continuous airtight ducts, is the same family of fail (603.9 plus 918.4 / 601.5).

Tape versus mastic — read the 181 mark

603.9 names the listings. Tapes and mastics used to seal fibrous glass ductwork shall be listed and labeled to UL 181A and marked “181 A-P” (pressure-sensitive tape), “181 A-M” (mastic), or “181 A-H” (heat-sensitive tape). Tapes and mastics used to seal metallic and flexible air ducts and flexible air connectors shall comply with UL 181B and be marked “181 B-FX” (pressure-sensitive tape) or “181 B-M” (mastic). Mechanical fasteners for flexible nonmetallic air ducts shall comply with UL 181B and be marked “181 B-C.”

Cloth “duct tape” that is not an 181 A or 181 B product is not a closure system. 181 A-P on metal spiral is the wrong listing family. 181 B-C is a clamp/fastener mark, not a mastic mark. Flex that is taped only, with no listed 181 B-C mechanical fastener at the collar, fails the last sentence of 603.9.

Fire-assembly penetrations — pointer, not a damper chapter

2024 IMC 603.7: Duct-system penetrations of walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs, and air-transfer openings in those components, shall be protected as required by Section 607. That is the hand-off to fire dampers, smoke dampers, and ceiling radiation dampers. Do not invent a Chapter 6 damper rating. 607.7 already appeared in the materials section: flexible ducts and air connectors shall not pass through any fire-resistance-rated assembly.

603.7 also writes the dwelling-to-garage steel duct: ducts in a private garage that penetrate a wall or ceiling separating a dwelling from that garage shall be continuous, constructed of sheet steel not less than 0.0187 inch (No. 26 gage), and shall not have openings into the garage. Fire and smoke dampers are not required in that specific garage penetration except where the IBC still requires them.

604.6 is the insulation companion: duct coverings shall not penetrate a wall or floor required to have a fire-resistance rating or required to be fireblocked. Wrap stops at the assembly; the damper and the listed through-penetration system take over.

Insulation, vapor retarders, condensation — IMC 604 plus the IECC

2024 IMC 604.1: Duct insulation shall conform to Sections 604.2 through 604.13 and the International Energy Conservation Code. IMC 604 does not publish commercial R-8 / R-12 tables. Those R-values, when required, come from the IECC (typically the C403 commercial mechanical provisions the jurisdiction adopted). On the M2, say that out loud: 604 is flame, smoke, vapor, lining, and identification; the energy code may add R-value.

604.2: Ducts that operate at temperatures exceeding 120°F shall have enough thermal insulation to limit the exposed surface temperature to 120°F. 604.3: Duct coverings and linings, including adhesives, shall have a flame-spread index not more than 25 and a smoke-developed index not more than 50 when tested to ASTM E84 or UL 723 using ASTM E2231 specimen preparation. They shall not flame, glow, smolder, or smoke when tested to ASTM C411 at the service temperature, and that test temperature shall not fall below 250°F. Coverings and linings shall be listed and labeled.

604.3 Exception 2 is the exterior-wrap relief: coverings added to the outside of ducts and not contained in plenums may have smoke-developed not more than 450 (flame spread still 25). Exception 1 is spray polyurethane in attics and crawl spaces (flame 25 / smoke 450 plus IBC 2603 ignition protection). 604.4 sends foam plastic used as covering or lining back through Section 604. 604.5: a listed appliance that is internally insulated is considered to conform.

604.11 vapor retarders: Where ducts used for cooling are externally insulated, the insulation shall be covered with a vapor retarder having a maximum permeance of 0.05 perm, or aluminum foil not less than 2 mils. Insulation that already has a permeance of 0.05 perm or less does not need a separate cover. Joints and seams shall be sealed to keep the retarder continuous. Exception: spray polyurethane foam with water-vapor permeance not greater than 3 perms per inch at the installed thickness. A cooling supply in a humid plenum with raw fiberglass and no jacket is a 604.11 / 603.12 fail. 603.12 is broader than cooling: provisions shall be made to prevent condensation on the exterior of any duct.

604.7 identification: external duct insulation (except spray polyurethane foam) and factory-insulated flexible duct shall be legibly printed or identified at intervals not greater than 36 inches with the manufacturer, the thermal-resistance R-value at the specified installed thickness, and the flame-spread and smoke-developed indices of the composite. R-values are insulation only — no credit for air films or jackets — based on tested C-values at 75°F. Duct wrap is evaluated at 75 percent of nominal thickness (25 percent compression). Factory-made flexible-duct thickness is half the difference between actual outside diameter and nominal inside diameter.

604.8 lining installation: linings shall be interrupted at the area of operation of a fire damper and not less than 6 inches upstream and 6 inches downstream of electric-resistance and fuel-burning heaters in a duct system. Metal nosings or sleeves shall cover exposed liner edges that face opposite the direction of airflow. 604.9: where liner is interrupted, a covering of equal thermal performance shall be installed. 604.10: service openings shall not be concealed by coverings unless the exact location is identified. 604.13: internal insulation exposed to the airstream shall be shown durable to UL 181; exposed internal insulation that is not impermeable to water shall not line ducts or plenums from the exit of a cooling coil to the downstream end of the drain pan.

604.12: insulated exterior ducts shall be protected with an approved weatherproof barrier — read it with 603.16.

Grease-duct slope is not Chapter 6. Type I exhaust slope (commonly ¼ inch per foot toward the hood or an approved reservoir) lives in Chapter 5. 603.8.1’s ⅛-inch-per-foot slope is an underground drainage rule. Do not put a grease-duct slope answer in a Chapter 6 stem.

603.18 still wants a volume damper or other supply-air adjustment in the branch or at each register, grille, or diffuser, and that damper shall have access. Floor registers must resist a 200-pound concentrated load on a 2-inch disc (603.18.1). Diffusers, registers, and grilles are prohibited in the floor or its upward extension within toilet and bathing rooms that the IBC requires to have smooth, hard, nonabsorbent surfaces, except in dwelling units (603.18.2).
