7.1 Travel, Transport, Directions, and Accommodation

Key Takeaways

  • The official A1 topic Reisen/Verkehr covers private and public transport, travel, accommodation and luggage.

  • Means of transport take mit plus dative ('mit dem Bus', 'mit der U-Bahn'); walking is 'zu Fuß'.

  • In timetables 'ab' marks the departure and 'an' the arrival; check the direction before you check the times.

  • Directions use geradeaus, links, rechts, die erste Straße rechts and um die Ecke; buildings use Erdgeschoss, Stock, Aufzug, Treppe and Rolltreppe.

  • Hotel bookings use Einzelzimmer, Doppelzimmer, mit Frühstück and phrases such as 'für zwei Nächte'.

Why Travel Vocabulary Pays Off

Reisen/Verkehr (travel and transport) is one of the official A1 topic areas, with the subtopics private and public transport, travel, accommodation and luggage. It is also behind many exam items. The official Modellsatz alone contains:

  • a customer asking how to get to the second floor (Hören Teil 1);
  • a coach stopping at a motorway service area and an unscheduled train stop (Hören Teil 2);
  • a Rhine boat trip and a train connection from Wiesbaden to Hamburg (Lesen Teil 2);
  • bus times on New Year's Eve (Lesen Teil 3);
  • a booking form for a bus trip (Schreiben Teil 1).

Means of Transport

Two verbs cover most sentences: fahren for going by vehicle and fliegen for flying. Gehen means going on foot, so Ich gehe zur Arbeit means you walk there.

At the Station: Tickets and Timetables

WordMeaning
die Fahrkarte / das Ticketticket
einfach / hin und zurückone way / return
der Fahrplantimetable
die Abfahrt / abfahrendeparture / to depart
die Ankunft / ankommenarrival / to arrive
das Gleisplatform, track
umsteigento change trains
einsteigen / aussteigento get on / to get off
die Verspätungdelay
die Haltestellestop (bus, tram)

A typical ticket exchange:

  • Eine Fahrkarte nach Köln, bitte. / Einfach oder hin und zurück? / Hin und zurück, bitte. Was kostet das?
  • Wann fährt der nächste Zug nach Frankfurt? / Um 14:12 Uhr von Gleis 5.
  • Muss ich umsteigen? / Ja, in Mannheim.

Reading a connection

German timetables mark the departure with ab and the arrival with an. The Modellsatz (Lesen Teil 2, item 10) tests exactly this. You are in Wiesbaden and want to be in Hamburg at midday. Two connections are offered:

Web pageJourneyDurationChanges
aab Hamburg 12.18, an Wiesbaden 16.524:341
bab Wiesbaden 08.09, an Hamburg 12.404:311

The first connection goes in the wrong direction. Only the second leaves Wiesbaden and reaches Hamburg around midday. Always check from where and to where before you look at the times.

Signs at stops

In Lesen Teil 3 you might read: In der Neujahrsnacht Busverkehr bis 23.00 Uhr und von 1.00 Uhr bis 5.00 Uhr alle 30 Minuten. The statement Von 23 Uhr bis 1 Uhr fährt kein Bus is therefore Richtig: the gap between the two service periods is the answer.

Asking for and Giving Directions

QuestionPossible answers
Entschuldigung, wie komme ich zum Bahnhof?Gehen Sie geradeaus und dann die zweite Straße links.
Wo ist hier die Post?Die Post ist gleich um die Ecke, neben der Bank.
Ist das weit?Nein, nur fünf Minuten zu Fuß. / Ja, nehmen Sie lieber den Bus.
Wo finde ich die Toiletten?Im Erdgeschoss, rechts neben dem Eingang.

Key words: geradeaus (straight on), links (left), rechts (right), die erste / zweite Straße (the first / second street), um die Ecke (round the corner), neben (next to), gegenüber (opposite), an der Ampel (at the traffic lights).

Inside buildings you need das Erdgeschoss (ground floor), der erste / zweite Stock (first / second floor above the ground floor), der Aufzug (lift), die Treppe (stairs) and die Rolltreppe (escalator). In the Modellsatz, a customer wants to reach the second floor. The escalator is broken, and the salesman says: Da gehen Sie hier rechts um die Ecke und nehmen den Aufzug. The option with the stairs borrows um die Ecke from the dialogue, and the escalator is mentioned too, but only the lift is the way up.

Accommodation and Luggage

WordMeaning
das Hotel / die Pensionhotel / guesthouse
die Jugendherbergeyouth hostel
die Ferienwohnungholiday flat
das Einzelzimmer / das Doppelzimmersingle / double room
mit Dusche / mit Frühstückwith shower / with breakfast
die Übernachtungovernight stay
reservieren / buchento reserve / to book
der Koffer / die Tasche / der Rucksacksuitcase / bag / backpack
das Gepäckluggage

A written booking needs only a few clear sentences: Ich möchte vom 10. bis 12. Mai ein Doppelzimmer mit Frühstück reservieren. Was kostet das Zimmer pro Nacht? The same words help with booking forms in Schreiben Teil 1: Anreise, Abreise, Anzahl der Personen, Zimmer.

Holidays and Trips

  • Im Sommer fahren wir ans Meer / in die Berge. (direction: accusative)
  • Wir machen Urlaub am Meer / in den Bergen. (location: dative)
  • Ich fahre zu meiner Familie nach Polen.

The last sentence mirrors Modellsatz Hören Teil 1, item 6. A colleague asks Wohin fahren Sie denn? and the answer is Zu meinen Verwandten nach Polen. The options are a holiday by the sea, work, and family. Verwandte (relatives) means family, so that is the answer, even though the speaker was talking about work a moment earlier.
