11.3 Sprechen Teil 3: Making Requests and Reacting with Picture Cards

Key Takeaways

  • Sprechen Teil 3 is worth 6 raw points: each candidate makes two requests (2 points each) and reacts to two (1 point each).

  • Each candidate draws two face-down cards showing everyday objects as pictograms, for example a chair.

  • A request can be as short as 'Ein Glas Wasser, bitte!' or use the imperative ('Geben Sie mir bitte …') or können ('Kannst du mir bitte …?').

  • If a candidate asks an information question instead of making a request, the examiner points to the task and asks them to rephrase.

  • Reactions may be verbal or non-verbal: 'Ja, natürlich. Hier, bitte.' with a gesture, or a polite refusal such as 'Tut mir leid, ich habe keinen Stift.'

The Task in Brief

Sprechen Teil 3 is called Bitten formulieren und darauf reagieren (making requests and reacting to them). According to the official test description, it tests whether you can ask someone to do or give something, in the form of a request or a question, with reference to an everyday object, and react suitably when someone asks you.

FeatureOfficial detail
Cardstwo face-down action cards per candidate, showing everyday objects as pictograms (for example a chair)
Procedureas in Teil 2: candidates take turns and address another candidate
Your tasks2 requests and 2 reactions
Timeabout 60 seconds per candidate
Points2 per request + 1 per reaction = 6 raw points

The moderator introduces the part with an example: Hier ein Beispiel: Ein Glas Wasser, bitte! The assessor reacts with Ja, natürlich. Bitte. and a gesture of handing over a glass. Then the candidates start. For the second round the moderator says Bitte noch einmal. or Weiter bitte.

Four Ways to Make a Request

PatternExample (card: a pen)Register
Noun + bitteEinen Stift, bitte!neutral and very short

All four are requests. The shortest form, noun + bitte, is the one the official example uses. Remember the accusative for masculine nouns: einen Stift, einen Stuhl, einen Apfel; but eine Tasse Kaffee and ein Glas Wasser.

Object cards and matching requests

CardRequest
Stuhl (chair)Einen Stuhl, bitte! / Kannst du mir bitte einen Stuhl geben?
Glas WasserEin Glas Wasser, bitte!

Everyday objects with their articles

Picture cards show everyday things from the A1 word list. Learn them with the article, because the article changes in the accusative request:

The most common mistake: an information question

A card showing a watch invites Wie spät ist es?, but that is a question for information, not a request. The official instructions say that if a candidate formulates a question instead of a request, the examiner points to the task and asks them to try again. Turn the information into an action: Kannst du mir bitte deine Uhr zeigen? A question counts as a request when it asks someone to do or give something: Können Sie mir bitte helfen?

Reacting to a Request

The official instructions state clearly that both verbal and non-verbal reactions are possible. A good reaction shows that you understood the request.

SituationReaction
You agree to give somethingJa, natürlich. Hier, bitte. (hand over the imaginary object) / Gern. / Kein Problem.
You agree to do somethingJa, sofort. (make a gesture of opening the window)
You cannot helpTut mir leid, ich habe keinen Stift. / Das geht leider nicht.

A reaction such as Das Fenster ist groß. does not respond to the request and suggests that you did not understand it.

How Teil 3 Is Scored

ElementFull pointsHalf points0 points
Each request (2 per candidate)2: task fulfilled and understandable1: only partly fulfilled because of language or content problemsnot fulfilled or not understandable
Each reaction (2 per candidate)10.50

As in Teil 2, comprehensibility decides, not the number of mistakes. Geben Sie mir bitte ein Stift has a case error, but everyone understands the request, so it can still score well. Naming the card without making a request (Stift.) does not fulfil the task.

Sample Round

  • Moderator: In Teil 3 sprechen Sie wieder mit Ihrem Partner. Sie haben eine Bitte. Nehmen Sie eine Karte.
  • Candidate A (card: Stuhl): Einen Stuhl, bitte!
  • Candidate B (pushes an imaginary chair across): Hier, bitte. (card: Fenster) Können Sie bitte das Fenster aufmachen?
  • Candidate C: Ja, natürlich. (gesture of opening a window; card: Kaffee) Eine Tasse Kaffee, bitte!
  • Candidate A: Tut mir leid, ich habe keinen Kaffee. Möchten Sie Tee?
  • Moderator: Danke. Bitte noch einmal.

Every request asks someone to do or give something, and every reaction shows understanding, in words, with a gesture, or both.

Preparation Checklist

  1. Learn the everyday objects from the A1 word list with their articles, so that you can say einen / eine / ein correctly.
  2. Practise each object in two request patterns: one short (…, bitte!) and one with Können Sie or Kannst du.
  3. Practise reacting with a gesture and one sentence.
  4. Never answer a picture with a description (Das ist ein Stuhl): make a request.
