Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CWI vocabulary game free?
Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.
How do the CWI vocabulary games work?
There are 4 games built on 44 CWI terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.
Where do the CWI terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the American Welding Society (AWS) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
What is the pass rate for the CWI exam?
The AWS CWI exam has approximately a 25-30% first-time pass rate, making it one of the more challenging certification exams. Many candidates fail one or more parts on their first attempt. The exam's difficulty reflects the critical safety role welding inspectors play in structural integrity. With thorough preparation using 200+ practice questions and hands-on code book study, you can significantly improve your chances.
How many questions are on each part of the CWI exam?
The CWI exam has three parts: Part A (Fundamentals) has 150 multiple-choice questions with a 2-hour time limit. Part B (Practical) has 46 questions requiring hands-on inspection of weld replicas and use of inspection tools. Part C (Code Book) has 50-65 questions with a 3-hour time limit, testing your ability to apply welding codes (D1.1, API 1104, or ASME Section IX). Each part requires 72% to pass.
