Can You Take the WA Electrician Exam?

96 hours of in-class education for an 8,000-hour certificate (RCW 19.28.205); classroom training in an approved apprenticeship counts
Experience
8,000 hours in an approved electrical construction trade apprenticeship, at least 4,000 of them new commercial or industrial installations (RCW 19.28.191(1)(c))
Additional Requirements
  • •Apply to L&I and receive an exam approval letter with an Exam Unique ID before scheduling with PSI
  • •Pass each section with at least 70% within one year of the approval letter date
  • •Open book: original copyrighted references (the 2020 NEC per L&I and PSI) and printed RCW 19.28 and WAC 296-46B in a three-ring binder; permanent tabs and highlighting only, no personal notes
  • •Wait 14 days after a failed attempt; after three failures in a one-year period, wait 90 days between attempts

Retake Policy

Within the one-year exam period that starts on the L&I approval letter date, you retake only the sections you failed, billed by the hour ($45 for the 1-hour Washington Codes section, $65 for the 3-hour NEC & Theory section). Wait 14 days after a failure; after failing any section three times in a one-year period, wait 90 days between attempts. Passed sections do not carry into a new exam period.

After holding a 01 journey level certificate for four years, you may take the 01 master electrician exam (80 NEC and theory, 20 Washington codes, and 10 major load calculation questions) to serve as a contractor's designated master electrician while still doing electrical work (RCW 19.28.191).
