1. Shampoo Composition

The active ingredient in shampoo is a surfactant — a surface active agent. A surfactant molecule has two ends with opposite affinities:

  • a hydrophilic head that is attracted to water;
  • a lipophilic tail that is attracted to oil.

In use, the lipophilic tails attach to sebum, product residue and debris and roll them into droplets. The hydrophilic heads face outward into the water, so when the hair is rinsed, the entire droplet lifts away. Water alone cannot do this, because oil and water do not mix. That single mechanism is the whole of shampoo chemistry.

Other components: water, which is typically the largest single ingredient; foaming and thickening agents; preservatives; conditioning agents; acidifiers to bring the pH into the target range; and fragrance and colour.

3. Rinses

A rinse is applied after shampooing and, in classical usage, is thinner than a conditioner and is intended chiefly to adjust pH, remove residue or add temporary colour.

The pairing that matters: protein for strength, moisture for elasticity and softness. Hair that stretches and does not return needs protein. Hair that snaps immediately with no stretch at all is over-proteinised and needs moisture. Alternating the two according to the elasticity test from section 6.5 is what "conditioning" actually means professionally.

5. The Shampoo Procedure

  1. Consult, analyse and drape — neck strip, shampoo cape, towel over the cape.
  2. Detangle the hair dry, from the ends upward toward the scalp, with a wide-tooth comb. Wet hair is far more fragile; detangling dry prevents breakage.
  3. Seat the client comfortably at the bowl with the neck supported on a clean towel over the neck rest.
  4. Test the water temperature on your inner wrist, then on the client's scalp, and ask.
  5. Wet the hair thoroughly, shielding the hairline and ears with your free hand.
  6. Apply shampoo to your palm, distribute across both hands, then apply to the scalp — not a stripe of neat product down the parting.
  7. Work with the pads of the fingers, never the nails. Begin at the hairline and work back in small rotary movements, covering the whole scalp systematically: hairline, sides, crown, nape.
  8. Rinse completely. Residue dulls the hair and irritates the scalp. Lift the hair at the nape and rinse underneath.
  9. Repeat if necessary — a second shampoo is for heavily soiled or product-laden hair, not a default.
  10. Apply conditioner or rinse according to the analysis, usually mid-lengths to ends rather than the scalp.
  11. Rinse with cooler water to close the cuticle.
  12. Towel-blot, do not rub. Rubbing raises the cuticle and tangles the hair.
  13. Detangle again from the ends up, with a wide-tooth comb.
  14. Clean and disinfect the bowl, neck rest and spray; bag the used towel in the covered receptacle.

Modifications

  • After a hydroxide relaxer, use a neutralising shampoo, working it through and rinsing repeatedly until the colour indicator clears and the pH is normalised. Do not massage the scalp.
  • Before a chemical service, do not massage vigorously. Scratching the scalp creates the micro-abrasions section 3.3 warned about. Some services call for no shampoo at all beforehand.
  • On a scalp with a suspected contagious condition, do not shampoo at all — stop and refer, per section 6.7.
  • On very fragile or high-porosity hair, use minimal manipulation, support the hair in the hand, and use a leave-in detangler.
