  1. Alkaline Swelling: An alkaline agent (ammonium persulfate, potassium persulfate, or ammonium hydroxide) swells the hair cuticle, raising the pH to between 9.0 and 11.0, and penetrates the cortex.

The Danger of Over-Lightening
