Massachusetts Civil Service Exams: Study Roadmap
Follow this path to organize your exam preparation
Phase 1: Review the HRD NoticeYou are here
Confirm the application and testing dates, eligibility and preference claims, and obtain the current official preparation guide. The October 2026 application period closed August 31.
Phase 2: Written Ability Practice
Use original exercises for verbal expression, verbal comprehension, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning and information ordering.
Phase 3: Understand Work Styles
Read the official WSQ instructions and answer the self-description items honestly. The current notice describes traits and attitudes, rather than a situational-judgment knowledge section.
Phase 4: Review Life Experience
Read the official LES instructions and review your actual past history and experience so that you can answer accurately.
Phase 5: Test-Day Readiness
Follow your Notice to Appear and the current preparation guide for timing and materials. HRD cites a 75-minute WAT pacing recommendation; this is not the total exam time. Bring current photo ID with signature.

Retake Policy
Apply for an announced HRD administration. Candidates taking multiple examinations within a two-year period after November 20, 2024 retain their highest qualifying score until two years after placement with that score, but must pass the subsequent exam; a failed subsequent exam removes the candidate from the eligible list. No fixed day-based retake interval is stated in the current notice.
