Can You Take the NYPD Police Officer Exam?

Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements

Age
Candidates must be at least 21 years old and not more than 35 years old at the date of appointment, with allowable extensions for qualifying military service.
Education
60 college credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA from an accredited institution, OR two years of active U.S. military service with an honorable discharge.
Experience
No prior law-enforcement experience is required to sit for the exam; military service can substitute for the education requirement.
Background Check
Comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check, character investigation, drug screening, medical examination, psychological evaluation, and Job Standards Test (physical).
Additional Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship by the date of appointment.
  • Valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Residency in NYC or one of six surrounding counties (Nassau, Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Putnam, Suffolk) by appointment.
  • Eligible list typically remains active for up to four years; candidates are called for academy classes from this list.

Candidates may file for any future Police Officer exam filing period administered by DCAS. The current 2026 cycle rotates exam numbers in the 6312-6322 series; the historical exam number was 4319. There is no fixed waiting period between filings, but each new filing requires a new $54 fee.
