Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NTN FrontLine National police exam?
The FrontLine National exam is the entry-level law enforcement test administered by National Testing Network (NTN) and used by hundreds of U.S. police agencies to screen officer candidates. It includes a video-based situational judgment section, a reading test, a report writing exercise with related multiple-choice items, and a Public Safety Self Assessment (PSSA) work-attitude questionnaire.
How is the FrontLine exam scored?
NTN uses a proprietary scoring system that produces dimensional profiles for each candidate. Reading and writing are scored pass/fail, while the video section yields a scaled score. Most agencies require at least 65 on the video section and 70 on the reading-writing section, though each agency can set custom pass points and weighting to build composite candidate rankings.
How long are FrontLine scores valid?
FrontLine scores remain valid for 12 months from the original test date. During that window, candidates can send their scores to multiple participating agencies through NTN's candidate portal without retesting. After one year, scores expire and are no longer visible to the candidate or to participating departments.
Can I retake the FrontLine exam?
Yes. NTN allows candidates to retest after a standard waiting period of three months (approximately 90 days); some individual departments require a longer wait. When you sign up to retest, your previous scores are deleted and replaced by the new scores, and you must reselect any departments you want to apply to. No separate three-failure rule is published by NTN.
What sections are on the FrontLine exam?
The exam has four components: a video-based situational judgment test (46 items measuring human-relations judgment), a reading test (30 fill-in-the-blank multiple-choice items based on typical on-the-job material), a report writing exercise (one written report plus 15 related multiple-choice items), and a Public Safety Self Assessment questionnaire measuring integrity, bias, and use-of-force attitudes.
