Why the trap arm has a length limit

A trap arm — the code calls it the fixture drain from the trap weir to the vent fitting — is the one section of the drainage system with no vent protection. Waste leaving the trap flows down the arm, and as the arm slopes, the flowing water depth builds. If the arm is long enough, the water fills the bore, creating a siphon that will pull the trap seal out behind it.

Two code rules bound it, and they say the same thing two ways: a length limit (Table 909.1) and a fall limit (909.2).

The measurement is developed length from the trap weir to the vent fitting, following the pipe — not a straight-line distance, and not from the trap outlet.

Notice that the slope column changes at 3 inches, matching Table 704.1: pipes 2-1/2 inches and smaller run at 1/4 inch per foot, 3 to 6 inches at 1/8 inch per foot.

PSI publishes a sample question on exactly this table: "With a 2-inch trap and 2-inch fixture drain, the maximum arm length between the vent and the trap is?" — with the published answer 8 feet, citing Table 906.1 in the bulletin's own note. The value comes from Table 909.1.

The exception

Exception: the developed length of the fixture drain from the trap weir to the vent fitting for self-siphoning fixtures, such as water closets, shall not be limited.

A water closet siphons itself by design; its trap refills from the tank at the end of every flush. There is nothing for the code to protect against, so the distance is unlimited.

The fall limit — IPC 909.2

The total fall in a fixture drain due to pipe slope shall not exceed the diameter of the fixture drain, nor shall the vent connection to a fixture drain, except for water closets, be below the weir of the trap.

Check the arithmetic against Table 909.1:

For the three smaller sizes the two rules coincide exactly — the tabulated length is the length at which the fall equals one pipe diameter. For 3-inch and 4-inch traps the table is more conservative than the fall rule.

The practical consequence: you cannot buy extra trap arm length by flattening the slope. Table 704.1 sets a minimum slope, and Table 909.1 caps the length at that slope.

The second half of 909.2 — the vent connection may not be below the weir — prevents the vent from opening into the wetted portion of the arm. Combined with 909.3, the vent must be at or above the weir elevation and at least two pipe diameters downstream of the weir.

The crown vent prohibition — IPC 909.3

A vent shall not be installed within two pipe diameters of the trap weir.

A crown vent — one tapped immediately at the weir — fills with water on the first discharge and seals shut. Historically it was standard practice; it is now prohibited in every model code.

Vent sizing — IPC 906.2

The diameter of individual vents, branch vents, circuit vents and relief vents shall be not less than one-half the required diameter of the drain served. The required size of the drain shall be determined in accordance with Table 710.1(2). Vent pipes shall be not less than 1-1/4 inches in diameter. Vents exceeding 40 feet in developed length shall be increased by one nominal pipe size for the entire developed length of the vent pipe. Relief vents for soil and waste stacks in buildings having more than 10 branch intervals shall be sized per Section 908.2.

Four rules in one paragraph:

  1. One-half the drain size, minimum.
  2. 1-1/4 inches absolute floor.
  3. Over 40 feet developed length — go up one nominal size for the entire length, not just the excess.
  4. Relief vents in tall buildings follow 908.2 (same size as the vent stack).

IPC 906.3 Developed length is measured from the farthest point of vent connection to the drainage system to the point of connection to the vent stack, stack vent or termination outside of the building.

IPC 906.4 Multiple branch vents: where multiple branch vents connect to a common branch vent, the common branch vent is sized based on the size of the common horizontal drainage branch that is or would be required to serve the total dfu load being vented.

Worked sizing

A 2-inch horizontal branch drain serves three lavatories. Each lavatory has an individual 1-1/4-inch vent. The three individual vents join a common branch vent that runs 48 feet to the stack vent.

  1. Individual vents: half of 2 inches is 1 inch, which is below the 1-1/4-inch floor, so each individual vent is 1-1/4 inches (906.2).
  2. Common branch vent: three lavatories are 3 dfu. Table 710.1(2) horizontal branch: 1-1/2 inch carries 3 dfu, so the common horizontal drainage branch required would be 1-1/2 inches. Half of that is 3/4 inch, again below the floor — so 1-1/4 inches minimum (906.4, 906.2).
  3. Developed length: the common branch vent runs 48 feet, exceeding 40 feet. Increase by one nominal size for the entire developed length: 1-1/2 inches.

Stack vents and vent stacks — IPC 906.1

The minimum required diameter of stack vents and vent stacks shall be determined from the developed length and the total of drainage fixture units connected thereto in accordance with Table 906.1, but in no case shall the diameter be less than one-half the diameter of the drain served or less than 1-1/4 inches.

Table 906.1 is a three-way lookup: the diameter of the soil or waste stack, the total fixture units being vented, and the maximum developed length of vent for each candidate vent diameter. On an open-book exam you read it; the two floor rules — half the drain served and 1-1/4 inches — are what you memorize.

Sump vents — IPC 906.5

Drainage piping below sewer level is vented in the same manner as a gravity system (906.5.1). Building sump vents for sumps with sewage pumps or ejectors other than pneumatic are sized from Table 906.5.1, which cross-references discharge capacity of the pump in gpm against vent diameter to give a maximum developed length.
