The problem trap seal protection solves
A trap seal is water, and water evaporates. A floor drain in a mechanical room that nothing discharges to will lose its 2-inch seal in a matter of weeks in dry, heated air — and Colorado's climate is dry. Once the seal is gone the drain is an open pipe to the sewer.
IPC 1002.4.1:
Trap seals of emergency floor drain traps and trap seals subject to evaporation shall be protected by one of the methods in Sections 1002.4.1.1 through 1002.4.1.5.
Two triggers: the trap is an emergency floor drain, or the seal is subject to evaporation. An emergency floor drain carries 0 dfu in Table 709.1 precisely because nothing is expected to discharge to it — which is exactly why its seal needs protecting.
The five permitted methods
1002.4.1.1 Potable water-supplied trap seal primer valve
A potable water-supplied trap seal primer valve shall supply water to the trap. Water-supplied trap seal primer valves shall conform to ASSE 1018. The discharge pipe from the trap seal primer valve shall connect to the trap above the trap seal on the inlet side of the trap.
A pressure-drop-actuated valve teed into a nearby cold water line. When water flows past it, the pressure drop opens the valve and it delivers a small charge of water to the trap.
1002.4.1.2 Reclaimed or graywater-supplied trap seal primer valve
Same ASSE 1018 valve and the same connection point, but supplied by reclaimed water or graywater. The quality of the water supplied must be in accordance with the requirements of the primer valve manufacturer — reclaimed water carries solids that can foul a small orifice.
1002.4.1.3 Wastewater-supplied trap primer device
A wastewater-supplied trap primer device shall supply water to the trap. Wastewater-supplied trap primer devices shall conform to ASSE 1044. The discharge pipe shall connect to the trap above the trap seal on the inlet side.
This device diverts a portion of the waste flowing through an adjacent fixture drain — typically a lavatory — into the floor drain trap.
1002.4.1.4 Barrier-type trap seal protection device
A barrier-type trap seal protection device shall protect the floor drain trap seal from evaporation. Barrier-type floor drain trap seal protection devices shall conform to ASSE 1072. The devices shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
A mechanical or elastomeric barrier inserted into the drain that opens under flow and closes when dry. Note that this is not a "trap that depends on moving parts to maintain the seal" prohibited by 1002.3 — the water trap is still there and still does the sealing. The barrier only prevents evaporation.
1002.4.1.5 Fixture drain connection for trap priming
A fixture drain from a lavatory or hand sink shall serve as a method of providing trap seal protection for an emergency floor drain, a trench drain, or a floor sink where such fixtures are located in the same room. A fixture drain from a drinking fountain shall serve the same purpose where such fixtures are in the same room or in a room adjacent to the room having the drinking fountain. The fixture drain shall not be routed on or above the surface of the floor and shall connect to the floor drain, trench drain, or floor sink at a point that is below the flood level rim and above the inlet to the trap of the receiving fixture.
Read the room rules carefully: a lavatory or hand sink must be in the same room; a drinking fountain may be in the same room or an adjacent room.
Where the primer connects
Three of the five methods share the same connection rule, and it is the most commonly tested detail:
The discharge pipe from the trap seal primer shall connect to the trap above the trap seal, on the inlet side of the trap.
Above the seal, so the primer water falls into the trap rather than being pushed through it. On the inlet side, so the fresh water displaces stale water out through the weir rather than sitting on the outlet leg.
Method 1002.4.1.5 uses a slightly different geometry because it is a fixture drain rather than a primer line: below the flood level rim and above the inlet to the trap of the receiving fixture.

The barrier-type device is the only method that needs no water source at all, which is why it dominates retrofit work on an existing floor drain in the middle of a slab.
Freezing and setting
IPC 1002.7: traps shall be set level with respect to the trap seal and, where necessary, protected from freezing. In Colorado this matters for traps in unheated garages, crawl spaces and exterior areas. Recall the related rules:
- IPC 305.4: water, soil and waste pipes shall not be installed in attics, crawl spaces, outside walls or other places subject to freezing unless protected by insulation or heat or both.
- IPC 802.1.2: where a floor drain is located within an area subject to freezing, the waste line serving it shall not be trapped and shall indirectly discharge into a waste receptor located outside of the area subject to freezing. The exception permits an air break or air gap connection where protected by a backwater valve.
That 802.1.2 rule is worth holding onto: in a freezing area, the answer is often not to trap the drain at all and to move the trap somewhere warm.
Worked case: a mechanical room floor drain
A boiler room in an unconditioned penthouse has one emergency floor drain. The nearest lavatory is two rooms away. The nearest cold water line is the boiler makeup, which flows only occasionally.
