SCWI is now a four-exam endorsement pathway, not a legacy two-part exam. Candidates complete WPQ1, WPQ2, WCQA, and NDEC at Prometric test centers, meet AWS B5.1/QC1 eligibility requirements, and then submit the SCWI application. The four exams total 240 questions (220 scored) and 10 hours 45 minutes of content time, with endorsement-specific passing scores ranging from 66% to 72%.

1Before a welder performance qualification test begins, which document should be selected and reviewed first?
A.The shop's last production traveler
B.The written WPS or approved test procedure that governs the qualification
C.The welder's preferred machine settings
D.The filler metal box label by itself
Explanation: A welder qualification test has to be run to a written procedure so the essential variables are defined before welding starts. Relying on memory, production travelers, or only the electrode package does not provide the control needed for a valid qualification.
2Under AWS QC47, which procedural basis is acceptable for a welder qualification test?
A.Only verbal direction from the Test Supervisor
B.Either a qualified WPS or the WPS used to qualify the procedure when the essential variables are recorded
C.Any manufacturer's suggested settings
D.Any WPS ever used in the shop, even if obsolete
Explanation: AWS QC47 recognizes welder qualification using a qualified WPS, and it also permits qualification on the procedure test assembly when the actual essential variables are documented. Verbal instructions or obsolete shop paperwork do not provide the same traceable basis.
3When a qualification coupon will be welded with a GTAW root and SMAW fill and cap, what must the selected procedure do?
A.List only the final cap process
B.Address each process and the sequence in which each one is used
C.Let the welder choose the process order without a written procedure
D.Use a pipe WPS regardless of the actual joint
Explanation: A multiprocess qualification has to reflect the way the weld is actually made, including which process is used for each segment. If the procedure does not cover both processes and their sequence, the test record will not support the intended qualification.
4If production joints must be qualified without backing, which test setup is the safest choice?
A.Use backing during the test and assume the qualification carries over
B.Qualify with a no-backing joint under a WPS written for no-backing welding
C.Let the welder decide after the root pass whether to use backing
D.Use any open-root joint because backing is never important
Explanation: The test should directly represent the production condition that must be qualified. If the job requires no-backing welding, the procedure and coupon should be set up for no-backing qualification rather than assuming a backed test covers it.
5During WPS selection for a test, which mismatch is most likely to invalidate the qualification?
A.Using a different polarity, process, or consumable system than the WPS requires
B.Cleaning the coupon twice instead of once
C.Using a shorter work lead
D.Setting the work angle slightly differently within normal technique
Explanation: Essential procedure variables such as process, polarity, and consumable system define the qualification basis. If the test is welded outside those limits, the result may no longer represent the WPS that was supposed to govern the qualification.
6Why should the current WPS revision be verified before the test starts?
A.Because qualifications are tied to the approved variables actually in effect for the test
B.Because old revisions are always easier to pass
C.Because the welder card expires if the revision changes
D.Because the inspector must rewrite the coupon dimensions
Explanation: A qualification record should point back to the exact procedure revision used during testing. Verifying the revision avoids a later dispute over whether the welder was tested to the approved variables that were in force at the time.
7A shop wants to let a welder's work on a procedure qualification coupon also serve as the welder performance qualification. What condition must be satisfied?
A.The welder must have welded the relevant test assembly, and the actual essential variables used must be recorded so the performance qualification can be determined
B.The engineer must issue a letter after testing, regardless of who welded the coupon
C.Any welder who observed the PQR test is automatically qualified
D.The coupon only needs visual acceptance, not full procedure qualification records
Explanation: A welder can only gain qualification from work the welder actually performed. The record also has to preserve the essential variables used on that assembly so the welder's qualification range can be evaluated later.
8Why is unlabeled scrap plate a poor choice for a welder qualification coupon?
A.It cools too fast for bend testing
B.Its material identity and thickness may not be traceable to the qualification objective or WPS
C.It is always stronger than certified plate
D.It cannot be tack welded
Explanation: Qualification testing depends on knowing what base metal and thickness were actually used. If the coupon material cannot be traced, the record may not support the intended qualification range or later audit review.
9For an all-position structural plate groove qualification, which combination gives the broadest position coverage?
A.1G only
B.2G and 2F
C.3G and 4G
D.1F and 2F
Explanation: For common AWS structural steel qualification logic, 3G and 4G together are the classic all-position plate combination. That pair demonstrates both vertical and overhead groove capability, which is why it is used when broad position coverage is needed.
10If the goal is the broadest plate thickness qualification under common AWS structural steel logic, which test coupon thickness is the best choice?
A.3/16 in.
B.1/4 in.
C.1/2 in.
D.1 in.
Explanation: A 1 in. plate test is commonly selected because it supports the broadest thickness qualification range, typically from 1/8 in. to unlimited thickness under AWS structural steel rules. Thinner coupons may still qualify useful ranges, but not the maximum one.

About the SCWI Exam

The current AWS Senior Certified Welding Inspector pathway is no longer a single exam. Effective April 1, 2025, AWS retired the standalone SCWI exam and now requires active CWIs to complete four stackable endorsements covering welder qualification, welding procedure qualification, welding coordination and quality assurance, and nondestructive examination coordination before applying for the SCWI upgrade.

SCWI Study Tips from Top Performers

1Study by endorsement, not by the retired legacy SCWI exam. Build four separate study blocks for WPQ1, WPQ2, WCQA, and NDEC, then finish with mixed timed sets.
2Treat WPQ1 and WPQ2 as code-and-record exams. Drill qualification ranges, essential variable logic, test assembly setup, and correct record finalization until the decisions feel procedural rather than memorized.
3For WCQA, focus on systems thinking: document control, audit preparation, corrective action flow, qualification program maintenance, traceability, and metrics that actually drive improvement.
4For NDEC, know both the coordination role and the method limits. You need to select appropriate NDE methods, understand qualification/certification programs, and interpret reports without drifting into operator-only minutiae.
5Practice switching between open-book and closed-book modes. The pathway mixes both, so your study plan should include untimed reference lookups and fully closed-book recall sets.
6Use current AWS references and current editions only. The endorsement path was introduced in 2025 and the 2026 price/application rules changed again, so old SCWI prep built around the retired exam can mislead you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there still a standalone SCWI exam?

No. AWS states that the single SCWI exam was retired effective April 1, 2025. The current route is the four-endorsement stackable pathway: WPQ1, WPQ2, WCQA, and NDEC.

What endorsement exams are required for SCWI?

You must earn the Welder Performance Qualifier endorsement, Welding Procedure Qualifier endorsement, Welding Coordination and Quality Assurance endorsement, and Nondestructive Examination Coordination endorsement. AWS allows you to take the four exams in any order, then submit the SCWI application once all are complete.

How many questions and how much testing time are in the SCWI pathway?

Across the four required exams, the pathway totals 240 questions, of which 220 are scorable and 20 are pretest items. Content time is 10 hours and 45 minutes in total: WPQ1 180 minutes, WPQ2 180 minutes, WCQA 150 minutes, and NDEC 135 minutes.

What passing scores do I need?

AWS publishes endorsement-specific passing thresholds rather than a single SCWI cut score. The current official targets are 70% for WPQ1, 66% for WPQ2, 70% for WCQA, and 72% for NDEC.

How much does the SCWI pathway cost in 2026?

AWS's 2026 price list shows a $185 SCWI application fee plus four required endorsement exams priced at $540 each for AWS members or $630 each for nonmembers. That makes the minimum pathway total $2,345 for members or $2,705 for nonmembers before optional seminars, travel, or book purchases.

What changed for 2026 applicants?

AWS states that beginning January 15, 2026, paper applications for certifications and endorsements are no longer accepted. Candidates now apply through the MyAWS portal, and the current 2026 price list also updates the pathway costs.

Is the SCWI pathway open book?

Partially. WPQ1 and WPQ2 are open-book endorsement exams, while WCQA and NDEC are closed-book computer-based exams. All four required exams are delivered through Prometric test centers.
