1Simplify using BODMAS: 12 + 6 ÷ 2 × 3 − 4.
A.17
B.23
C.11
D.14
Explanation: BODMAS orders operations as Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. Here 6 ÷ 2 = 3, then 3 × 3 = 9, so the expression becomes 12 + 9 − 4 = 17.
2Find the LCM of 12, 18, and 24.
A.72
B.36
C.144
D.48
Explanation: Prime factorise: 12 = 2² × 3, 18 = 2 × 3², 24 = 2³ × 3. The LCM takes the highest power of each prime: 2³ × 3² = 8 × 9 = 72.
3A shopkeeper marks an item 25% above cost and gives a 10% discount. What is his profit percentage?
A.12.5%
B.15%
C.10%
D.13.5%
Explanation: Let cost = 100. Marked price = 125. After 10% discount, selling price = 125 × 0.9 = 112.5. Profit = 112.5 − 100 = 12.5, so profit percentage = 12.5%.
4If 15 workers build a wall in 8 days, how many days will 10 workers take to build the same wall, working at the same rate?
A.12 days
B.10 days
C.16 days
D.6 days
Explanation: Total work = 15 × 8 = 120 worker-days. With 10 workers, days = 120 ÷ 10 = 12. Fewer workers means more days, an inverse proportion.
5A train 150 m long crosses a pole in 15 seconds. What is its speed in km/h?
A.36 km/h
B.30 km/h
C.45 km/h
D.40 km/h
Explanation: To cross a pole, the train travels its own length: speed = 150 ÷ 15 = 10 m/s. Convert to km/h by multiplying by 18/5: 10 × 18/5 = 36 km/h.
6What is the simple interest on Rs 8,000 at 5% per annum for 3 years?
A.Rs 1,200
B.Rs 1,000
C.Rs 1,400
D.Rs 800
Explanation: Simple interest = (P × R × T) ÷ 100 = (8000 × 5 × 3) ÷ 100 = 120000 ÷ 100 = Rs 1,200.
7The ratio of two numbers is 3:5 and their sum is 64. What is the larger number?
A.40
B.24
C.32
D.45
Explanation: The total ratio parts are 3 + 5 = 8, so each part equals 64 ÷ 8 = 8. The larger number is 5 parts = 5 × 8 = 40.
8The area of a circle is 154 cm². What is its radius? (Use π = 22/7.)
A.7 cm
B.14 cm
C.11 cm
D.3.5 cm
Explanation: Area = πr² = 154, so r² = 154 × 7 / 22 = 49, giving r = 7 cm.
9What is 35% of 240?
A.84
B.72
C.96
D.80
Explanation: 35% of 240 = 0.35 × 240 = 84. You can also compute 10% = 24, so 35% = 24 × 3.5 = 84.
10Two pipes A and B fill a tank in 12 and 24 minutes respectively. How long will they take together?
A.8 minutes
B.6 minutes
C.10 minutes
D.18 minutes
Explanation: In one minute A fills 1/12 and B fills 1/24, together 1/12 + 1/24 = 3/24 = 1/8. So the tank fills in 8 minutes.

About the RRB ALP Exam

The RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) exam is the national computer-based recruitment test conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards to select Assistant Loco Pilots for Indian Railways. Selection has three stages: CBT 1, a 75-question screening test (Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness) completed in 60 minutes; CBT 2, with Part A of 100 questions (Maths, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, and General Awareness) in 90 minutes and a qualifying trade-specific Part B of 75 questions in 60 minutes; and a separate Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). All MCQ stages carry negative marking of 1/3 mark per wrong answer, and questions are pitched at the Class 10 standard. The final merit for ALP weighs CBT 2 Part A at 70% and the CBAT at 30%.

RRB ALP Study Tips from Top Performers

1Treat Basic Science & Engineering as the rank-maker — it carries the largest share of CBT 2 Part A, so master engineering drawing, basic electricity, and work-power-energy first.
2Because of 1/3 negative marking, avoid blind guessing; attempt only questions where you can eliminate at least two options.
3Build raw speed in Mathematics and Reasoning — both CBTs are tight on time (about 48 seconds per question in CBT 1).
4Revise Class 10 NCERT Physics, Chemistry, and Biology for General Science rather than higher-level material.
5Keep a daily current-affairs and railway-GK log for the General Awareness section.
6Choose and prepare your CBT 2 Part B trade strictly according to your ITI/Diploma/Degree discipline as per the qualification-wise trade grouping.
7Start CBAT (psycho test) practice early, since it is a distinct aptitude stage with its own T-score qualifying requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RRB ALP exam?

RRB ALP is the Railway Recruitment Boards' national computer-based test to recruit Assistant Loco Pilots for Indian Railways. It has three stages: CBT 1 (screening), CBT 2 (Part A merit and Part B trade), and a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT).

How many questions and how much time are there in each stage?

CBT 1 has 75 questions in 60 minutes. CBT 2 has 175 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes — Part A has 100 questions in 90 minutes and Part B has 75 questions in 60 minutes. The CBAT is a separate timed psychometric test.

Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP exam?

Yes. CBT 1 and both parts of CBT 2 deduct 1/3 of a mark for every wrong answer. The CBAT has no negative marking.

What are the qualifying marks?

For CBT 1 and CBT 2 Part A the minimum pass percentage is 40% (UR/EWS), 30% (OBC-NCL), 30% (SC), and 25% (ST). Part B requires 35% for all categories, and the CBAT requires a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery.

What is the application fee for RRB ALP?

The fee is Rs 500 for UR/OBC candidates (Rs 400 refunded after appearing in CBT 1) and Rs 250 for SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, Female, Transgender, Minorities, and EBC candidates (fully refunded after appearing in CBT 1).

How is the final merit list calculated?

For ALP posts, the final merit combines CBT 2 Part A (70% weightage) and the CBAT (30% weightage). Part B of CBT 2 is only qualifying and its marks do not count toward merit.

What is the CBAT (psycho test)?

The Computer-Based Aptitude Test is a psychometric stage administered only for ALP candidates. It tests aptitudes such as perceptual speed, memory, and attention, is conducted in English and Hindi, has no negative marking, and requires a T-score of at least 42 in each battery.

What qualifications are needed to apply?

Candidates must have passed Class 10 with an ITI in a relevant trade, OR hold a Diploma/Degree in Engineering in a relevant discipline, OR have an Act Apprenticeship certificate. The age limit is generally 18-30 with category-wise relaxations.
