About the RRB NTPC Exam
The RRB Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) exam is a national recruitment test conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards for graduate and undergraduate non-technical posts such as Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Commercial Apprentice, and Junior Account Assistant. Selection is staged: a first-stage Computer Based Test (CBT 1) with 100 questions, a second-stage CBT 2 with 120 questions, and — for specific posts — a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) or Typing Skill Test, followed by document verification and a medical examination. Both CBTs cover General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence & Reasoning, each carrying one mark per question with a negative marking of one-third for wrong answers. CBT 1 is a screening stage and CBT 2 marks determine the merit list.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the RRB NTPC exam?
RRB NTPC is the Non-Technical Popular Categories recruitment exam conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards for graduate and undergraduate non-technical posts in Indian Railways, such as Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Junior Clerk cum Typist, and Commercial Apprentice. It is a multi-stage computer-based test.
How many questions and sections are in CBT 1?
CBT 1 has 100 multiple-choice questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes: General Awareness (40), Mathematics (30), and General Intelligence & Reasoning (30). PwBD candidates using a scribe get 120 minutes.
How is CBT 2 different from CBT 1?
CBT 2 has 120 questions for 120 marks in 90 minutes — General Awareness (50), Mathematics (35), and Reasoning (35) — and is harder. CBT 1 is a screening stage, while CBT 2 marks count toward the final merit list.
Is there negative marking in RRB NTPC?
Yes. One-third (1/3) of the mark allotted to a question is deducted for each wrong answer in both CBT 1 and CBT 2. Unattempted questions carry no penalty, so guessing blindly can lower your score.
What are the minimum qualifying marks?
The minimum qualifying percentages are 40% for UR/EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25% for ST candidates. Final selection depends on category-wise and zone-wise cut-offs, which are typically much higher than the minimums.
What is the application fee for RRB NTPC?
The application fee is Rs 500 for UR/OBC candidates and Rs 250 for SC/ST/Ex-Servicemen/PwBD/Female/Transgender/Minority/EBC candidates. A large part of the fee is refunded after the candidate appears in CBT 1.
What is the CBAT and who takes it?
The Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) is required only for candidates opting for Station Master and Traffic Assistant posts. It has multiple test batteries, no negative marking, and requires a minimum T-Score of 42 in each battery with no relaxation; final merit uses 70% CBT 2 and 30% CBAT.
What comes after the computer-based tests?
After CBT 2 (and CBAT or Typing Skill Test where applicable), shortlisted candidates undergo document verification and a medical examination as per railway medical standards before final appointment to the chosen post.
