Railway Recruitment Boards

The RRB Junior Engineer exam recruits Junior Engineers for the Indian Railways through two computer-based tests. CBT 1 has 100 questions in 90 minutes across Mathematics (30), Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15) and General Science (30); CBT 2 has 150 questions in 120 minutes. Each correct answer earns one mark, with one-third negative marking, and minimum qualifying marks are 40% (UR), 30% (OBC/SC) and 25% (ST).

Sample RRB JE Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to test your RRB JE exam readiness. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 100+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1Simplify: 15 + 5 × 4 − 8 ÷ 2.
A.31
B.32
C.27
D.36
Explanation: Apply BODMAS: division and multiplication first, then addition/subtraction. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 and 5 × 4 = 20, so the expression becomes 15 + 20 − 4 = 31.
2Find the HCF (GCD) of 48 and 60.
A.12
B.6
C.24
D.8
Explanation: 48 = 2^4 × 3 and 60 = 2^2 × 3 × 5. The HCF takes the lowest power of each common prime: 2^2 × 3 = 12.
3The LCM of 12, 15 and 20 is:
A.60
B.120
C.180
D.240
Explanation: Prime factorise: 12 = 2^2 × 3, 15 = 3 × 5, 20 = 2^2 × 5. The LCM takes the highest power of each prime: 2^2 × 3 × 5 = 60.
4What is 35% of 240?
A.84
B.72
C.96
D.80
Explanation: 35% of 240 = 0.35 × 240 = 84. You can also compute 10% (24) × 3.5 = 84.
5A sum of money triples itself in 20 years at simple interest. What is the rate of interest per annum?
A.10%
B.12%
C.15%
D.8%
Explanation: Tripling means interest earned equals twice the principal, so SI = 2P over 20 years. Using SI = P×R×T/100: 2P = P×R×20/100, giving R = 200/20 = 10%.
6The compound interest on Rs 10,000 at 10% per annum for 2 years, compounded annually, is:
A.Rs 2,100
B.Rs 2,000
C.Rs 2,200
D.Rs 1,900
Explanation: Amount = 10000 × (1.10)^2 = 10000 × 1.21 = 12,100. Compound interest = 12,100 − 10,000 = Rs 2,100.
7A shopkeeper marks an article 40% above cost and gives a 25% discount. His profit percentage is:
A.5%
B.10%
C.15%
D.0%
Explanation: Let cost = 100. Marked price = 140. After 25% discount, selling price = 140 × 0.75 = 105. Profit = 105 − 100 = 5, i.e. 5%.
8If 12 workers can build a wall in 10 days, how many days will 15 workers take to build the same wall?
A.8 days
B.12 days
C.9 days
D.6 days
Explanation: This is inverse proportion: total work = 12 × 10 = 120 worker-days. With 15 workers, days = 120 ÷ 15 = 8 days.
9A train 150 m long passes a pole in 15 seconds. Its speed is:
A.36 km/h
B.30 km/h
C.45 km/h
D.54 km/h
Explanation: Speed = distance/time = 150 m / 15 s = 10 m/s. Convert to km/h by multiplying by 18/5: 10 × 18/5 = 36 km/h.
10The average of five consecutive even numbers is 20. The largest of these numbers is:
A.24
B.22
C.26
D.20
Explanation: For consecutive even numbers, the average equals the middle term, so the middle number is 20. The five numbers are 16, 18, 20, 22, 24; the largest is 24.

About the RRB JE Exam

The RRB Junior Engineer (JE) exam is a national-level recruitment test conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards for Junior Engineer and allied technical posts across the Indian Railways zones. Selection is through two computer-based tests: CBT 1, a 100-question screening stage of 90 minutes covering Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science; and CBT 2, a 150-question merit-deciding stage of 120 minutes covering general subjects plus discipline-specific Technical Abilities. Each question carries one mark, and both stages apply a negative marking of one-third mark for every wrong answer. Final selection requires qualifying both CBTs, followed by document verification and a medical examination.

RRB JE Study Tips from Top Performers

1Prioritise Mathematics and General Science — together they account for 60 of the 100 CBT 1 marks, the highest-yield portion of the screening test.
2Practise under the 90-minute limit; with less than a minute per question, speed and time management decide your CBT 1 score.
3Respect the one-third negative marking — skip questions you are genuinely unsure of rather than guessing blindly.
4Revise 10th-standard NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Biology for General Science, focusing on definitions, units, formulae and common reactions.
5Drill reasoning topics like series, coding-decoding, blood relations and syllogism daily, since they are scoring and time-efficient with practice.
6Stay current on national affairs, sports, polity and railway-specific GK for the 15-mark General Awareness section.
7Attempt full-length timed mocks regularly and analyse errors subject-wise to convert weak areas into reliable marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RRB JE exam?

The RRB Junior Engineer (JE) exam is a national recruitment test by the Railway Recruitment Boards for Junior Engineer and allied technical posts in the Indian Railways. It is conducted through two computer-based tests, CBT 1 and CBT 2, followed by document verification and a medical examination.

How many questions and how much time does CBT 1 have?

CBT 1 has 100 objective multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The subjects are Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15) and General Science (30), each question carrying one mark.

Is there negative marking in the RRB JE exam?

Yes. Both CBT 1 and CBT 2 apply negative marking of one-third (1/3) mark for every wrong answer. Unanswered questions carry no penalty, so accuracy and selective attempting are important.

What are the minimum qualifying marks?

The minimum qualifying percentages are 40% for UR, 30% for OBC and SC, and 25% for ST candidates. PwBD candidates may receive a 2% relaxation if sufficient PwBD candidates are not available against reserved vacancies.

How much is the application fee?

The fee is Rs 500 for general candidates, of which Rs 400 is refunded on appearing in CBT 1. SC/ST/Ex-Servicemen/PwBD/Female/Transgender/Minorities/EBC candidates pay Rs 250, which is refunded on appearing in CBT 1.

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates need a three-year Diploma in Engineering or a B.E./B.Tech in the relevant discipline from a recognised institution; the CMA post accepts a B.Sc with Physics and Chemistry. The age limit is generally 18 to 36 years with relaxations as per the notification.

Does CBT 1 score count in the final merit list?

No. CBT 1 is a screening stage and its marks are not added to the final merit list. CBT 2, which includes the 100-mark Technical Abilities section, is the merit-deciding stage along with document verification and the medical examination.

How many times can I take the RRB JE exam?

There is no fixed limit on attempts. Candidates apply afresh under each new Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) issued by the RRBs, provided they continue to meet the eligibility and age criteria for that notification.
