Analogy: identify the relationship first

State the precise relationship in the given pair—such as part-to-whole, tool-to-function, cause-to-effect, or degree—and choose the option that preserves that same relationship in the same direction.

Number-series difference method

Subtract consecutive terms first. If the first differences do not form a pattern, examine second differences, ratios, alternating terms, or familiar sequences such as squares and primes.

Alphabet-position shortcut

In the English alphabet, A=1 through Z=26. A letter's reverse position is 27 minus its forward position; for example, D is 4th from the start and 23rd from the end.

Coding-decoding consistency check

Derive the rule from every supplied example before applying it. Check letter shifts, reversal, position values, rearrangement, and word-level substitution; reject a rule that fits only one example.

Syllogism: valid conclusion rule

A conclusion follows only if it must be true in every arrangement allowed by the premises. Do not reverse an all-statement: 'All A are B' does not imply 'All B are A.'

Venn diagrams for categorical reasoning

Represent 'all' by containment, 'no' by disjoint sets, and 'some' by at least one marked overlap. Test a conclusion against every diagram consistent with the premises.

Blood-relation chain method

Start from the named reference person and trace one relationship at a time, marking generation and gender. Do not assume a person's gender unless the wording establishes it.

Direction-sense coordinate method

Treat north as +y, south as -y, east as +x, and west as -x. Add each movement; the final signs give the direction, and the Pythagorean theorem gives straight-line distance when needed.

Ranking from both ends

If the same person is r from the top and s from the bottom, the total number of people is r+s-1 because that person is counted in both ranks.

Coded mathematical operations

Replace every symbol with its stated operation before calculating, then apply normal BODMAS precedence to the substituted expression unless the question specifies a different order.

Classification or odd-one-out

Find a property shared by the greatest number of options, such as category, structure, function, numerical rule, or sequence position. The odd item is the one that lacks that exact property.

Statement and assumption

An assumption is an unstated idea that the statement depends on. Use the negation test: if denying the proposed assumption destroys the statement's reasoning, the assumption is necessary.

Data sufficiency

Ask whether the information determines one unique answer, not whether you can perform lengthy calculations. Test each statement alone first, then combine them only if neither is sufficient by itself.

Angle between clock hands

At H hours and M minutes, the absolute angle is |30H-5.5M| degrees. If it exceeds 180 degrees, subtract it from 360 degrees to obtain the smaller angle.

Odd days in calendar problems

Odd days are the remainder after complete weeks are removed. An ordinary year contributes 1 odd day and a leap year contributes 2; a leap year is divisible by 4, except century years must be divisible by 400.

Newton's first law and inertia

An object remains at rest or in uniform straight-line motion unless acted on by a net external force. Inertia is the tendency to resist a change in that state of motion.

Newton's second law

For constant mass, net force equals mass times acceleration: F=ma. Force is measured in newtons, where 1 N=1 kg·m/s².

Mechanical work

For a constant force, work is W=Fs cos θ, where θ is the angle between force and displacement. Work is zero when force is perpendicular to displacement and is measured in joules.

Power

Power is the rate of doing work or transferring energy: P=W/t. Its SI unit is the watt, and 1 watt equals 1 joule per second.

Ohm's law

At constant physical conditions, potential difference equals current times resistance: V=IR. Voltage is measured in volts, current in amperes, and resistance in ohms.

Atomic number and mass number

Atomic number is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus and identifies the element. Mass number is the total number of protons plus neutrons in one isotope.

pH scale

pH measures acidity or basicity. At 25°C, pH 7 is neutral, values below 7 are acidic, and values above 7 are basic; each whole pH step represents a tenfold change in hydrogen-ion concentration.

Acid-base neutralization

An acid reacts with a base to form salt and water. In net ionic form for a strong acid and strong base, H⁺+OH⁻→H₂O.

Oxidation and reduction

Oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons. They occur together because electrons lost by one species are gained by another.

Photosynthesis

Green plants use light energy captured by chlorophyll to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen: 6CO₂+6H₂O→C₆H₁₂O₆+6O₂.

Aerobic cellular respiration

Cells release usable energy by oxidizing glucose with oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water: C₆H₁₂O₆+6O₂→6CO₂+6H₂O+energy. Most aerobic respiration occurs in mitochondria.

Main components of blood

Red blood cells transport oxygen, white blood cells support immune defense, platelets help clotting, and plasma carries cells, nutrients, hormones, wastes, and dissolved proteins.

Gene and heredity

A gene is a segment of DNA that contributes to a functional product and is a basic unit of heredity. Different forms of the same gene are called alleles.

BODMAS order of operations

Evaluate Brackets first, then Orders such as powers and roots, followed by Division and Multiplication from left to right, then Addition and Subtraction from left to right.

HCF-LCM product rule

For two positive integers a and b, HCF(a,b)×LCM(a,b)=a×b. This product rule does not extend unchanged to three or more integers.

Percentage change

Percentage change=(new value-old value)÷old value×100%. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease.

Direct proportion

If y is directly proportional to x, then y=kx and y/x is constant. For two cases, y₁/x₁=y₂/x₂.

Arithmetic mean

Arithmetic mean=sum of all observations÷number of observations. If one value changes by d in a set of n values, the mean changes by d/n.

Simple interest

Simple interest is SI=PRT/100 when principal P earns annual rate R percent for T years. The final amount is P+SI.

Compound interest with annual compounding

After T years at annual rate R percent, amount A=P(1+R/100)^T. Compound interest equals A-P.

Profit and loss percentages

Profit=selling price-cost price and loss=cost price-selling price. Profit or loss percentage is calculated on cost price unless the question explicitly states another base.

Speed-distance-time relationship

Speed=distance/time. Convert km/h to m/s by multiplying by 5/18, and convert m/s to km/h by multiplying by 18/5.

Combined work rates

If A finishes a job in a days and B in b days, their rates are 1/a and 1/b jobs per day. Working together, time=1÷(1/a+1/b)=ab/(a+b), assuming constant rates.

Circle formulas

For radius r, circumference=2πr and area=πr². For diameter d=2r, circumference=πd.

Solving a linear equation

For ax+b=c with a≠0, isolate the variable using the same operation on both sides: x=(c-b)/a. Substitute the result into the original equation to verify it.

Adoption and commencement of the Constitution of India

The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949, and most provisions came into force on 26 January 1950, celebrated as Republic Day.

Fundamental Rights

Fundamental Rights are contained in Part III of the Constitution of India. They are judicially enforceable, subject to the qualifications and restrictions stated in the Constitution.

Composition of Parliament of India

Under Article 79, Parliament consists of the President and two Houses: the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) and the House of the People (Lok Sabha).

President and Prime Minister: constitutional roles

The President is the constitutional head of the Union. The Prime Minister heads the Council of Ministers, which aids and advises the President and is collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha.

RBI and the repo rate

The Reserve Bank of India is India's central bank. The policy repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends short-term funds to banks against eligible collateral under its liquidity framework.

GDP versus inflation

Gross domestic product measures the value of final goods and services produced within a country during a period. Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level, reducing money's purchasing power.

ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation is India's national space agency under the Department of Space. Its headquarters is in Bengaluru.

Eight major Indian classical dance forms

The commonly recognized forms are Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, and Sattriya. Match them respectively with Tamil Nadu, North India, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Manipur, Kerala, and Assam.

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award

The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna is India's highest national sporting honour. It recognizes spectacular and outstanding performance in sports over the prescribed assessment period.
