Together they give a novice a complete working method: search the zones, name their condition, and act to keep the path of travel open. Washington's required curriculum reaches this material through the classroom standard perception and risk management and the behind-the-wheel standard hazard awareness and navigation.
The six zones
A zone is the area of space in one of six directions from the vehicle, extending as far as the driver can see or as far as it is relevant.

The changing condition is the useful one for teaching, because it is where decisions should be made. A vehicle signalling to pull out is a changing front zone; a gap appearing in the left rear is a changing zone that may permit a lane change. Waiting until a zone is fully closed means acting under time pressure.
The three search ranges
Zone control organises search by distance as well as direction:

Lane positioning
Within a single lane a driver has meaningful lateral choice, and using it deliberately is one of the clearest markers of a trained driver.

Some programmes extend the model with additional positions describing placement at the extreme edges of the lane. The three-position model is the one most Washington-relevant driver education texts use, and it is sufficient: the principle is move away from the closed zone, toward the open one, and never move into a closed zone to escape another.
Lane position is also communication. Moving to position 2 well before a row of parked cars tells following drivers something is ahead; moving to position 3 as an oncoming vehicle waits to turn left across your path signals that you have seen them.
Applying it
A closed right front zone - parked cars with occupants, a cyclist, a bus at a stop. Response: reduce speed and move to lane position 2 if the left front and left rear zones are open. If they are not, reduce speed and hold position; do not trade one closed zone for another.
A closed front zone - a slow vehicle ahead. Response: increase following distance first, because that restores line of sight; then consider whether a lane change is lawful and available.
A closed left front zone at an intersection - an oncoming vehicle waiting to turn left across your path. Response: cover the brake, move to lane position 3 if the right zones are open, and be prepared for the turn to begin.
Closed rear zone - a vehicle following too closely. Response: increase the space ahead, so any deceleration can be gradual. This is counter-intuitive to students and worth teaching explicitly.
Two closed side zones - boxed in on both sides. Response: change speed to break out of the cluster, since position is not available. This is the situation the Smith System key "leave yourself an out" exists to prevent.
Coaching from the right seat
Ask for the condition, not the object. "What is your right front zone?" trains the framework. "Do you see the cyclist?" trains nothing.
Require a response to every closed zone. A student who names a closed zone and drives on has learned vocabulary, not driving. Follow every identification with "and so?"
Name lane position explicitly. "Where are you in the lane?" then "where should you be, and why?" Novices default to position 1 permanently.
Prompt the changing condition. "What is about to change?" is the highest-value question in commentary driving, because it moves decisions upstream.
Connect it to space cushion language. Zone control and the three-second rule are the same idea from different directions. A three-second following interval is simply an open front zone measured in time.
