A novice has none of that, and no view of the front corners, the rear, or the right flank. Reference points supply a temporary substitute: a visual alignment that reliably corresponds to a real spatial relationship. How a reference point works
A reference point pairs a fixed part of the vehicle - a mirror, a wiper post, the bonnet edge, the door handle, a side window pillar - with a feature of the road - a lane line, a kerb, a stop line, a parked car's bumper. When the two align in a specific way from the driver's seat, the vehicle is in a known position.
Two properties follow, and both matter for teaching.
They are individual. The alignment depends on the driver's seated eye position. A taller student sees a different alignment for the same physical position. This is why reference points must be established after the cockpit drill has set the seat, and why they must be re-established when the student moves to the family car. Say this out loud: "these points are yours, in this car. In your mother's car you will build new ones."
They are approximate. A reference point gets a novice close enough to be safe while their direct perception develops. It is not a precision instrument, and the student should always verify with a look where a look is possible.

Establishing a reference point
The method is the same for every point, and it takes about a minute in a car park.
- Place the vehicle physically in the target position. Have the student stop with the right tyres genuinely 6 inches from a painted line.
- Verify from outside. The student gets out and looks, so they know the position is real.
- Return and look. Seated normally, the student identifies what on the vehicle aligns with what on the road, and says it aloud in their own words.
- Write it down. In a notebook or on a card - "right wiper post on the line means about six inches."
- Reproduce it. Drive away, return, and place the vehicle by the reference point alone. Then get out and check.
- Repeat in a different location so the point is not tied to one painted line.
Step 2 is the one instructors skip, and it is the one that makes the point trustworthy. A student who has verified their own reference point from outside the car will use it under pressure.
Fading the points
Reference points are scaffolding, and scaffolding is withdrawn. Fade them deliberately across a course:

Positioning beyond the lane
