The five keys
The Smith System is a commercially trained space-cushion method used widely in fleet and driver education. Its five keys are a memorable organisation of habits that appear, under different names, in every serious defensive driving framework.
Key 1 - Aim high in steering
Direct visual attention far down the intended path rather than at the road immediately ahead of the bumper. The working figure taught in driver education is an eye lead of roughly 12 to 15 seconds of travel - about a city block in town, and a quarter-mile or more at highway speed.
Two benefits follow mechanically. Information arrives while options still exist, and steering smooths out, because a driver steers toward where they are looking. A novice who watches the lane line two car lengths ahead produces the characteristic sawing correction pattern; raising the eye lead usually fixes it within a single lesson.
Key 2 - Get the big picture

Move the eyes every two seconds or so, and check mirrors on a schedule - typically every five to eight seconds and always before braking, signalling, changing lanes or turning.
This key exists to defeat two failure modes:
- Staring, which reduces the driver to a narrow tunnel with poor motion detection at the edges.
- Target fixation, in which a driver looks at the hazard they wish to avoid and steers into it. The countermeasure is explicit: look where you want to go, not at what you want to miss. This is the single most useful sentence an instructor can install before an emergency ever occurs.
Key 4 - Leave yourself an out
Maintain space on all sides and preserve an escape path. In practice: keep a following interval of at least three seconds, extended for conditions; avoid travelling in another vehicle's blind spot; try to keep at least one adjacent lane or shoulder open; and position in traffic clusters so you are not boxed in.

Making visual search observable
Visual search is invisible from the passenger seat, which is the central difficulty of teaching it. Four techniques make it observable.
Commentary driving. Have the student narrate what they see and what they intend. Section 11.4 develops this fully. A student who is not narrating hazards is usually not seeing them.
The look-ahead question. At random intervals ask, "what is the furthest thing you can see that might matter?" A student whose answer is the vehicle ahead is not aiming high.
The recall check. Immediately after passing a hazard, ask what the vehicle behind is doing, or what colour the car two ahead was. Poor recall reveals a narrow search pattern.
Direct observation of head movement. From the right seat you can see head and eye movement clearly. Mirror checks, shoulder checks and intersection scans should be visible. If you cannot see the student's head move, it did not move.

The evidence base, stated honestly
Visual search training is well supported as a driver education approach, and hazard perception is one of the few skills that reliably distinguishes novice from experienced drivers in research. What is not well supported is the set of precise retention percentages that circulate in training materials - claims that learners retain a specific percentage from lecture, video or peer teaching. Those figures trace to an unsourced diagram and have no reliable empirical basis. Teach visual search because hazard perception research supports it, not because of a retention pyramid.
Similarly, be careful with crash-causation percentages. It is well established that driver error contributes to the large majority of crashes and that mechanical failure is a small minority.
