8.4 Mixed-Skill Review, Pacing & Readiness Checks

Key Takeaways

  • Use separate evidence for reading, writing, actual-audio listening and responsive speaking.

  • The suggested 75-minute study allocation is flexible, and the actual paper determines response instructions.

  • The original integrated task distinguishes class time, room, deadline, required item and cancellation channel.

  • Independent self-review checklists are study tools; they are not CAPLE marking grids or pass guarantees.

Measure what you can do

A CIPLE revision session should test actual performance. Recognising a grammar explanation is different from writing a message, understanding a recording or answering a question aloud. Use a simple record with four columns: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Write one concrete observation in each, such as “confused opening time with tour start” or “omitted the requested invitation”. This produces a more useful next step than calling yourself generally weak at Portuguese.

The current CAPLE specification provides the reference format: reading/writing for 75 minutes, listening for 30 minutes and speaking for 15 minutes per pair. Their weights are 45%, 30% and 25%. It does not publish the invented 0–5 marking grids, universal guessing rules or fixed subpart timings sometimes repeated in preparation material. The checklists below are independent study tools, not official score predictions.

Practise the whole written period

Try a 75-minute written session using an official sample or clearly labelled original tasks. One possible study allocation is 35 minutes for reading, 10 for a short message, 20 for a longer text and 10 for review and completion of the required answer sheets. Adjust that allocation to the actual paper and your observed needs. It is not a rule requiring every candidate to spend ten minutes copying a complete composition at the end.

Write final responses in the required place as you proceed. CAPLE requires written production in blue or black pen on the supplied sheets; rough work is not graded as the final answer. Check the actual paper's answer instructions for reading and listening. Avoid assuming every question has four options or that every correct response has the same raw-point value.

Original integrated reading-and-writing exercise

Read this fictional notice:

O curso de fotografia de sábado começa às dez, na sala dois da biblioteca. Traga uma fotografia da sua cidade. A inscrição termina na quinta-feira. Quem não puder participar deve avisar a receção por correio eletrónico.

Extract the start time, room, item to bring, deadline and cancellation channel. The answers are ten o'clock, room two, a photograph of your city, Thursday and email to reception. Thursday is the registration deadline, not the class day. “Bring a camera” might sound plausible but is not what this notice asks.

Now write a message saying you cannot attend, explain a reason and ask whether another date is available. For this exercise, choose a 25–35-word target. A relevant draft might say that you have to work on Saturday and ask about the following week. Check content against the three requested actions before counting. The practice target does not establish a universal CIPLE length limit.

Review a listening attempt honestly

Use a recording from CAPLE's sample resources and follow its instructions. On the first attempt, keep transcripts and answer keys closed. Record your answer, then compare with the supplied key if available. A correct answer obtained after reading the transcript is evidence of reading support, not a clean listening result.

Classify each error. Did you fail to recognise a known word, confuse two numbers, attach a detail to the wrong person or miss a correction introduced by mas? Each needs different practice. For a number confusion, dictate contrasting numbers in meaningful phrases. For a changed arrangement, practise a short exchange where the first time is rejected and a second is accepted. Use any replay permitted by the actual task, but do not assume you can stop an exam recording yourself.

Review a speaking attempt by communicative function

Ask a partner to choose three tasks: one personal-information question, one service role-play and one simple opinion question. Answer without reading a script. Useful observation questions are:

  • Did the response answer what was asked?
  • Was the important information understandable?
  • Did you ask a relevant question when information was missing?
  • Did you react to the other person's reply?
  • Could you repair a mistaken word or misunderstood time?

A partner is not an official rater. Their observations identify practice needs rather than award a CAPLE grade. If you get stuck, use Pode repetir, por favor? or describe a missing word. Do not turn a two-second pause into an imagined automatic failure, and do not assume that one repair phrase guarantees a pass.

Choose the next week's work from the evidence

If written messages repeatedly omit a detail, make prompt checklists. If verb times drift, retell yesterday's activities and tomorrow's plans using a few reliable forms. If listening is weaker, use short audio extracts regularly rather than replacing them with silent reading. If speaking answers become memorised monologues, have a partner vary the question order and interrupt with a relevant follow-up.

A final-week sequence can alternate reading notices, writing original messages, listening to short recordings and speaking in roles. Leave time to revisit mistakes after a day. Study hours are a planning choice: CAPLE does not promise that a particular number of hours brings every learner to A2.

Final practical check

Read the examination rules and your centre's instructions. Confirm the complete schedule, original registration ID, permitted stationery, journey and any approved special arrangements. Do not place real identifying details inside task answers where anonymity is required. CAPLE requires video recording for the oral component.

After the session, use CAPLE's results process and the LAPE's actual certificate notice. A practice score or a completed online study guide is not a certificate. Readiness is stronger when you can demonstrate every published skill with fresh material, including actual audio and responsive conversation, rather than reproduce the examples on this page.

Test Your Knowledge

A practice notice says registration ends Thursday and the class is Saturday at ten. When is the class?

A

Thursday at ten.

B

Saturday at ten.

C

Friday at midnight.

D

The notice gives no class time.

Test Your Knowledge

What gives the clearest evidence of listening comprehension?

A

Reading the transcript before the audio.

B

Copying the answer key without listening.

C

Answering from the recording with text and key hidden, then checking the answer.

D

Reading a grammar table silently.

Test Your Knowledge

Which approach helps a paired service role-play?

A

Speak continuously regardless of the reply.

B

Memorise one paragraph and ignore questions.

C

Demand that every turn last exactly thirty seconds.

D

Ask relevant questions, listen and respond to the other person.
