2.3 Ser, Estar, Ficar & Everyday Verb Forms

Key Takeaways

  • Ser expresses identity and other characterising relationships; estar expresses states and location; ficar can express location, staying or a resulting state.

  • Ficar is useful for asking where a place is, but estar is not universally forbidden with buildings.

  • Tenho trinta anos states age; vou estudar states a plan; estou a estudar describes an action in progress.

  • Use past forms according to meaning: ontem fui reports a completed event, while era/vivia can describe past background.

Choose meaning before a shortcut

Ser, estar and ficar express different relationships. The shortcut “permanent versus temporary” can help initially, but it is incomplete: é estudante uses ser even though a course ends, while está morto uses estar for an irreversible condition. Learn the communicative function and the complete phrase. CIPLE asks you to communicate in everyday situations rather than label philosophical categories.

Identify, describe and locate

Use ser for identity, nationality, occupation, origin, material, ownership and time: Sou a Ana, Sou canadiana, Ele é professor, A mesa é de madeira, O livro é meu, São duas horas. An event can also take ser with a location: A reunião é na sala quatro. The question concerns where an event happens, not where a movable object has been placed.

Use estar for a state or current location: Estou cansada, O café está quente, As chaves estão na mesa. The adjective contributes meaning. A sopa é fria can describe a type of soup, while a sopa está fria describes its condition now. Do not assume that every use of estar must disappear quickly.

Ficar can locate a place, express remaining somewhere, or mark a resulting state:

  • Onde fica a farmácia? — Ask where the pharmacy is.
  • Hoje fico em casa. — Say you will stay at home.
  • Fiquei contente com a notícia. — Describe becoming happy after the news.

Ficar is a useful location pattern, but it is not the only grammatical way to locate a building. The linguist-authored Ciberdúvidas explanation gives both O hospital está ao lado do hotel and O hospital fica ao lado do hotel. Do not treat the first as an automatic error. Prefer a reliable pattern without declaring every alternative impossible.

Age uses ter: Tenho trinta anos. A plan often uses ir + infinitive: Amanhã vou visitar o museu. An action in progress commonly uses estar a + infinitive in the model taught here: Estamos a almoçar. Change the auxiliary for the subject and leave the second verb in the infinitive. These phrases serve different purposes: vou trabalhar is a plan; estou a trabalhar is an action in progress.

For regular present forms, remove the infinitive ending and add the matching ending. With falar, practise falo, falas, fala, falamos, falam. With comer, use como, comes, come, comemos, comem. With abrir, use abro, abres, abre, abrimos, abrem. Not every verb follows these models: tenho and vou must be learned separately. Make each form into a useful sentence rather than reciting endings without meaning.

Distinguish completed events from background

For a completed past event, practise the pretérito perfeito: Ontem visitei o museu, Comprei pão, Comi peixe, Abri a janela. Useful irregular first-person forms include fui (ir or ser), estive (estar), tive (ter), fiz (fazer) and vi (ver). Context resolves fui: Fui ao banco describes going; fui estudante nessa escola describes being a student there.

For a past habit or background, the imperfeito is useful: Quando era criança, vivia no Porto. Contrast Ontem estava a chover quando saí with Ontem choveu durante uma hora. The first sets background around an event; the second presents a bounded event. Do not choose a tense solely because a sentence contains ontem: both examples contain that word.

A short original model links the frames:

Antes vivia numa aldeia. Agora moro em Braga e trabalho numa loja. Ontem fui ao banco depois do trabalho. Amanhã vou visitar a minha irmã. Neste momento estou a preparar o jantar.

The time words make the sequence clear: former background, present routine, completed event, future plan and current action. Underline each verb and say what it contributes.

Ask and answer usable questions

Practise Onde mora?, O que faz?, Tem filhos?, A que horas vai trabalhar? and O que fez ontem? Give a direct answer and one relevant detail. For example: Moro em Braga, perto da estação answers the location question. Ontem fui às compras e comprei fruta answers the past-activity question. A correct phrase about a different topic still fails to answer what was asked.

Negate a simple statement by putting não before the conjugated verb: Não tenho carro, Não fui ao cinema, Não estou a trabalhar. To check a detail, retain the meaningful verb: A consulta é às dez? or O senhor tem uma marcação? A yes/no question does not require the English auxiliary “do”.

Self-check in a small scenario

Describe yourself in three sentences: identity, present state and location. Then add yesterday's activity and tomorrow's plan. A possible answer is Sou professora. Hoje estou cansada. Estou em casa. Ontem trabalhei até tarde. Amanhã vou descansar. Change the subject to nós and adjust the verbs: somos, estamos, trabalhámos, vamos. Finally, locate a service with O banco fica perto do mercado. You have now used the verbs to communicate six distinct meanings, which is more useful than a rigid permanent/temporary rule.
