9.3 Post Office & Bank: Hear Instructions and Make Requests

Key Takeaways

  • Enviar means send; levantar means collect in a postal setting; remetente and destinatário identify different people.

  • Attach each quoted price to the selected service and each time to the accepted appointment.

  • Use specific bank or post-office requests and follow factual replies rather than reciting vocabulary alone.

  • Fictional service conditions do not establish current tariffs, document policies or financial instructions.

Move from vocabulary to a transaction

CAPLE lists understanding basic post-office and bank instructions in listening and making simple requests at those services in speaking. Knowing the words banco and correios does not by itself teach an exchange. Practise explaining a need, answering a follow-up, hearing a price or instruction and confirming the next action. The examples here use fictional prices, times and service conditions; they are not current bank or postal tariffs.

Establish the task at the post office

NeedUseful Portuguese
Send a letterQueria enviar esta carta.
Buy a stampQueria um selo, por favor.
Ask the priceQuanto custa o envio?
Give the destinationÉ para França.
Ask about deliveryQuanto tempo demora?
Collect a parcelQueria levantar uma encomenda.
Ask for clarificationPode repetir a última informação?

Enviar means send, while levantar, in this setting, means collect. Remetente is sender and destinatário is recipient. These are useful form labels as well as spoken words. An address field for destinatário should not automatically receive the sender's address. Identify whose information is requested before filling a blank.

Listen to a posting exchange

Original listening script:

Cliente: Bom dia. Queria enviar esta carta para França.
Funcionária: Quer correio normal ou registado? Neste exercício, o normal custa dois euros e o registado custa cinco.
Cliente: Prefiro registado.
Funcionária: Então preencha aqui o nome e a morada do destinatário. Depois entregue o formulário neste balcão.
Cliente: São os dados da pessoa que recebe a carta?
Funcionária: Sim, exatamente.

Have a partner read it with the listener's script hidden. Identify the selected service, its stated price and whose details are needed. The customer chooses registered post at €5 in the exercise. The €2 amount belongs to the rejected normal service. The recipient's details are required, not the sender's. Do not generalise either price to real postal services.

Collect an item and understand a condition

Original notice and response:

Levantamento de encomendas: apresente o aviso e o documento indicado. Atendimento das nove às dezassete horas. Para levantamento por outra pessoa, peça informações no balcão.

A customer says Queria levantar esta encomenda. Tenho o aviso comigo. The clerk replies Mostre também o documento, por favor. The language task is to understand the two items mentioned and the stated service hours. The notice does not authorise every representative to collect every parcel or provide a complete identity-document policy. If a condition is unclear, practise asking Que documento devo apresentar?

Make a simple bank request

Common words include conta (account), saldo (balance), levantamento (cash withdrawal), depósito (deposit), transferência (transfer), cartão (card) and extrato (statement). Context distinguishes a restaurant bill from a bank account even though both use conta.

Practise specific requests:

  • Queria informações sobre uma conta.
  • Queria um extrato, por favor.
  • Pode explicar como faço esta transferência?
  • O cartão não está a funcionar. Pode ajudar-me?
  • Preciso de marcar uma hora para falar com um funcionário?

A request for information is not an instruction to make a real financial transaction. During study use fictional amounts and masked details. Never disclose passwords or security codes simply because a language model exercise contains the word banco.

Hear a bank instruction and retain the next action

Original listening script:

Cliente: Bom dia.
Obrigada.

The accepted appointment is Thursday at 15h00. Tuesday at 11h00 was offered and rejected. The confirmation message identifies the supporting document; the script does not specify what it is, so a question cannot legitimately invent “three salary slips” as the answer. A useful follow-up is Qual é o comprovativo que devo levar?

Distinguish permission, obligation and prohibition

Pode can express permission or possibility; deve can express what should be done; é necessário establishes a requirement in the supplied text. Não é permitido signals prohibition. In an exercise saying É necessário preencher o formulário antes de pagar, filling the form precedes payment. It does not say payment must be cash unless that detail is also supplied.

Read and listen for sequencing words: primeiro, depois, antes de and em seguida. A role-play partner can give three steps: take a ticket, wait for the number, approach the counter. Repeat the steps back in order. Then change the order or destination and listen again rather than reproducing the previous answer.

Complete a short service exchange

Choose one purpose, such as sending a letter or asking about an account. Add a greeting, one clear request, a factual follow-up and a confirmation. Let the partner supply a new amount, date or instruction. Check whether both people can explain the agreed next action at the end. This verifies functional communication and gives you a concrete error to revisit if a detail was misunderstood.
