9.2 Routine Border Questions & Personal Details
Key Takeaways
Routine border questions are explicit CAPLE listening and speaking skills; the exercise is language practice, not an entry-eligibility rule.
De onde asks origin, para onde asks destination, onde asks location and quanto tempo asks duration.
Keep the purpose, duration, accommodation and return destination attached to the right detail.
Respond to instructions such as aguarde, mostre, preencha and assine, and ask a targeted clarification when needed.
Recognise the communicative task
CAPLE explicitly includes understanding routine questions at border posts in listening and responding with the requested information in speaking. This is a language skill. It does not require you to memorise visa categories, decide entry eligibility or give legal advice. The exercises use fictional travellers and simple questions about purpose, destination, duration and documents. Actual travel decisions remain separate from a language-practice answer.
A successful response starts with understanding what was asked. If the question is Quanto tempo vai ficar?, state a duration. A nationality answer may be perfectly grammatical but does not answer the question. Keep a short list of question words and practise responding to each without changing the topic.
Decode the question word
| Question | Target information | Example answer |
|---|---|---|
| Como se chama? | name | Chamo-me Ana Costa. |
| Qual é a sua nacionalidade? | nationality | Sou canadiana. |
| De onde vem? | origin of the journey | Venho de Madrid. |
| Para onde vai? | destination | Vou para Braga. |
| Onde vai ficar? | accommodation/location | Vou ficar num hotel no centro. |
| Quanto tempo vai ficar? | length of stay | Vou ficar quatro dias. |
| Qual é o motivo da viagem? | purpose | Estou de férias. |
| Pode mostrar o documento? | requested action | Sim, aqui está. |
De onde and para onde point in opposite directions: from where and to where. Onde asks for a place; quanto tempo asks for a duration. Quando asks when. Learn those contrasts by meaning rather than trying to infer the answer from one familiar noun in a long question.
Listen to a complete exchange
Original listening script:
Funcionário: Bom dia. Pode mostrar o seu documento, por favor?
Viajante: Sim, aqui está.
Funcionário: Qual é o motivo da viagem?
Viajante: Estou de férias. Vou visitar a minha irmã em Braga.
Funcionário: Quanto tempo vai ficar?
Viajante: Quatro dias. Depois volto para Madrid.
Funcionário: E onde vai ficar durante a visita?
Viajante: Em casa da minha irmã, perto do centro.
Have a partner read the exchange while the listener keeps the text hidden. Ask for three facts: purpose, duration and accommodation. The traveller is on holiday and visiting a sister, stays four days and will stay at the sister's home. Madrid is the later return destination; it is not the location of the accommodation during the visit. This is a detail-association check rather than a vocabulary-only question.
Change one detail and repeat: the stay becomes three weeks, the accommodation a hotel or the destination Coimbra. The listener should revise the answer. If they continue saying four days after the script changes, they are recalling a model rather than following the spoken information.
Produce short relevant answers
Use a reliable verb pattern rather than a long rehearsed speech. Venho de introduces journey origin, vou para introduces destination, vou ficar introduces an intended stay and volto para introduces a return. Visitar takes the person or place being visited: Vou visitar a minha família. Trabalhar and estudar identify other activities in fictional exercises when the prompt supplies them.
Keep time quantities consistent. Quatro dias is not quarta-feira. Uma semana is seven days; três semanas is not three months. If the task asks for the departure date and gives dia vinte e três, do not substitute the number of nights. For a spoken date, repeat it back if needed: Dia vinte e três, certo?
Follow simple instructions
A service interaction may contain an instruction rather than a question:
- Aguarde aqui, por favor. — Wait here.
- Dirija-se ao balcão dois. — Go to counter two.
- Mostre o documento. — Show the document.
- Preencha este formulário. — Fill in this form.
- Assine neste espaço. — Sign in this space.
Identify the action and its object or destination. Balcão dois is counter two, not two documents. Neste espaço locates where to sign. During study, use fictional forms and details. During actual administrative processes, follow the responsible service's document requirements rather than applying a made-up exercise as a legal rule.
Repair a misunderstanding
If you confuse a place question with a duration question, correct the answer briefly: Desculpe, percebi mal. Vou ficar quatro dias. If you miss a number, ask Pode repetir o número do balcão? A targeted request is more useful than saying only Não sei. Keep the response in simple Portuguese and listen to the clarification.
For paired practice, one person asks five questions in a new order. The other answers without reading, then asks for repetition of one deliberately unclear detail. Swap roles. Review whether the answers supplied the requested facts, whether the numbers were correct and whether the clarification restored understanding. This covers both listening and responding to routine questions rather than treating one memorised introduction as complete preparation.
