1.1 ECAT Exam Pattern, Scoring Scheme & UET Merit Aggregate

Key Takeaways

  • The ECAT has 100 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes: 10 English questions plus 90 questions split equally (30 each) among the three subjects of the chosen combination.

  • Each correct answer earns 4 points (maximum 400); UET states there is no negative marking and no passing threshold for any program.

  • UET offers five subject combinations; Pre-Engineering candidates take Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and the test combination must match the candidate's Intermediate subjects (DAE holders choose PMC or PM-CS).

  • For UET Lahore's ECAT-based programs (Fall 2026 prospectus), Intermediate-stream merit is 33% ECAT percentage + 50% first-year (Part-I) percentage + 17% Matric percentage.

  • A minimum merit aggregate of 50% is required, along with at least 60% Intermediate marks for engineering, architecture and NCEAC computer engineering programs (50% for science, technology and business programs).

1.1 ECAT Exam Pattern, Scoring Scheme & UET Merit Aggregate

The Engineering Colleges Admission Test (ECAT) is the combined entrance test conducted by the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore. UET states that it has run this combined test since 1999 under Government of Punjab directives, and that Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) notifications make an entrance test mandatory for undergraduate engineering admission in both public and private engineering institutions. UET also uses ECAT scores for its computing and other programs where the prospectus lists ECAT as a requirement.

The ECAT portal (ecat.uet.edu.pk) lists these partner institutions for the 2026 cycle: UET Lahore (main campus), UET Lahore Faisalabad Campus, UET Lahore Narowal Campus, Rachna College of Engineering and Technology (RCET) Gujranwala, UET Taxila, Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) Multan, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), NFC Institute of Engineering and Technology Multan, Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology (KFUEIT) Rahim Yar Khan, and the University of Gujrat. Each institution publishes its own admission schedule, seat categories and merit rules, so always read the prospectus of the university you are applying to.

This guide teaches the Pre-Engineering combination (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English). Candidates who sit a Computer Science, Statistics or Biology combination share the Mathematics/Physics and English material here but need their own Intermediate textbooks for the other subject.

1. Official Test Structure

UET's "About ECAT" page sets the standard of the test at Intermediate level and gives these rules:

FeatureOfficial rule
Duration100 minutes
Questions10 English questions; the other 90 are divided equally among the three subjects of the combination (30 each)
Marking4 points for each correct answer; maximum 400
Negative markingNone
Passing thresholdNone for any program; merit decides admission
Syllabus depthThe FAQ says the entire Intermediate / A-Level / DAE syllabus is examined, not a shortened syllabus
Delivery (2026)Computer-based test at UET-designated centres; UET ran a mock test before ECAT 2026 (First)
AttemptsMultiple attempts are allowed under PEC instructions; the best score counts for that admission session

The Five Subject Combinations

Candidates choose a combination that matches their Intermediate (or equivalent) subjects:

  1. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (Pre-Engineering)
  2. Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science
  3. Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
  4. Biology, Physics and Chemistry (Pre-Medical, used for programs that accept it)
  5. Mathematics, Statistics and Physics

English is common to all five. DAE holders may choose only Physics–Mathematics–Chemistry–English or Physics–Mathematics–Computer Science–English. The prospectus warns that, except for DAE candidates, applicants are considered only for the disciplines prescribed for the combination they sat, so picking the wrong combination can cost an admission later.

What the Admission FAQ Says About Each Paper

  • English (10 questions): comprehension type. A paragraph is given and candidates answer multiple-choice questions about it. Chapter 21 of this guide therefore focuses on reading a passage accurately, with grammar and vocabulary taught as support skills.
  • Mathematics (30): the FAQ names topics such as differentiation, integration, linear algebra and trigonometry, but the full Intermediate syllabus is in scope.
  • Physics (30): the FAQ names mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and work and energy, again within the full syllabus.
  • Chemistry (30): the full Intermediate chemistry syllabus (physical, inorganic and organic).

UET's published statistics for ECAT 2026 (First) show how wide the spread is. Pre-Engineering candidates had a maximum score of 396 and an average of 203 out of 400. An average near 200 means a typical candidate answered only about half the questions correctly, so steady accuracy across all four papers is what separates candidates.

2. Scoring Mechanics and Guessing

Because each correct answer is worth 4 points and a wrong or blank answer is worth 0, a blank answer can never beat a guess. With four options, a random guess has an expected value of

E[guess]=14(4)+34(0)=1 point.\mathbb{E}[\text{guess}] = \tfrac{1}{4}(4) + \tfrac{3}{4}(0) = 1 \text{ point}.

Eliminating distractors raises that value:

Options left after eliminationProbability correctExpected points
41/41/41.001.00
31/31/31.331.33
21/21/22.002.00
1114.004.00

The practical rule is simple: answer every question before time runs out. Some older past papers circulating online were set under rules that included negative marking, so do not copy their "skip if unsure" advice; the current UET rules state there is no negative marking.

3. Test-Day Rules That Affect Your Score

The ECAT portal and FAQ list several conduct rules:

  • Bring the admit card and an accepted photo ID: CNIC/NICOP, NADRA juvenile card, Matric/Intermediate certificate with photograph, computerised domicile with photograph, passport, or a Statement of Entry for A-Level students. Missing ID can lead to expulsion from the centre.
  • Report about 30 minutes early. A candidate who misses the allotted centre and time slot is not permitted to retake that test.
  • Calculators, books, mobile phones and bags are not allowed. Rough paper is provided, so all arithmetic is done by hand.
  • The test is fully automated, so no re-checking is offered, and a purchased test token is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • The fee for the Fall 2026 sittings was Rs. 3,000, paid through the bank channels listed on the portal.

4. UET Lahore's Merit Aggregate (Fall 2026 Prospectus)

The ECAT score is only one part of merit. UET Lahore's Fall 2026 undergraduate prospectus ("Determination of Merit") gives these weights for ECAT-based programs:

Qualification routeECAT (ET) percentageAcademic component
Intermediate stream33%First-year (Part-I) percentage 50% + Matric percentage 17%
O/A Level or equivalent33%11th-class (O-Level or equivalent) marks 67%
DAE holders33%Sum of first- and second-year percentages 67%
B.Sc. Engineering Technology holders33%CGPA (7 semesters if incomplete) 67%

For the Intermediate stream:

Aggregate=0.33 (ECAT %)+0.50 (First-year %)+0.17 (Matric %)\text{Aggregate} = 0.33\,(\text{ECAT}\,\%) + 0.50\,(\text{First-year}\,\%) + 0.17\,(\text{Matric}\,\%)

where ECAT %=ECAT score400×100\text{ECAT}\,\% = \dfrac{\text{ECAT score}}{400} \times 100.

Key notes from the prospectus:

  • The Part-I (first-year) result is used even if the candidate has already completed Intermediate.
  • For Pre-Medical candidates with additional Mathematics, the first-year biology marks are used, provided Mathematics is passed.
  • The minimum merit aggregate is 50%. Separately, applicants need at least 60% Intermediate marks for engineering, architecture and NCEAC computer engineering programs, and 50% for science, technology and business programs. These marks are counted without sports or Hafiz-e-Quran credit.
  • Admission is offered before Part-II results are declared; it is cancelled if the final result does not meet the required marks.
  • A Hafiz-e-Quran candidate who ticks the box on the form and appears before the verification committee can be awarded between 0 and 20 marks for proficiency. Sportspersons can receive up to 10 marks after a separate test.
  • Merit is prepared category-wise (open merit, regional, DAE and other seat categories). Candidates whose percentages agree to four decimal places (after truncation) are treated as equal.

Partner universities may use different formulas, so check each one's own prospectus.

5. Worked Aggregate Calculations

Example 1: A balanced candidate

Matric 88%, first-year 90%, ECAT 280/400 (70%):

0.33(70)+0.50(90)+0.17(88)=23.10+45.00+14.96=83.06%0.33(70) + 0.50(90) + 0.17(88) = 23.10 + 45.00 + 14.96 = 83.06\%

Example 2: Strong school marks, weak ECAT vs. weaker school marks, strong ECAT

CandidateMatricFirst-yearECAT scoreECAT %Aggregate
A92%90%20050%16.50+45.00+15.64=77.14%16.50 + 45.00 + 15.64 = 77.14\%
B85%82%30075%24.75+41.00+14.45=80.20%24.75 + 41.00 + 14.45 = 80.20\%

Candidate A's school-marks lead is worth 0.50(8)+0.17(7)=5.190.50(8) + 0.17(7) = 5.19 aggregate points, but Candidate B's 100-mark ECAT lead is worth 0.33(25)=8.250.33(25) = 8.25 points. B finishes about 3.06 points ahead.

Example 3: The 50% floor

Matric 65%, first-year 60%, ECAT 80/400 (20%):

0.33(20)+0.50(60)+0.17(65)=6.60+30.00+11.05=47.65%0.33(20) + 0.50(60) + 0.17(65) = 6.60 + 30.00 + 11.05 = 47.65\%

This is below the 50% minimum, so the candidate is not eligible, even though there is no ECAT pass mark. Raising the ECAT score to 120/400 (30%) adds 0.33×10=3.300.33 \times 10 = 3.30 points and gives 50.95%50.95\%.

6. The Marginal Value of One Correct Answer

One correct answer adds 4 points, which is 11 percentage point of the ECAT score. Under the Intermediate-stream formula:

Δ(Aggregate)=0.33×1=0.33 aggregate points per correct answer\Delta(\text{Aggregate}) = 0.33 \times 1 = 0.33 \text{ aggregate points per correct answer}

Since one percentage point of first-year marks is worth 0.500.50 aggregate points, one extra correct MCQ is worth about two-thirds of a first-year percentage point (0.33/0.50=0.660.33 / 0.50 = 0.66).

Extra correct answersExtra ECAT pointsAggregate gainEquivalent first-year %
140.330.330.660.66
5201.651.653.303.30
10403.303.306.606.60
20806.606.6013.2013.20

By the time you sit the ECAT, your Matric and first-year marks are usually fixed. Your ECAT score is the part you can still change, and a 10-question improvement moves you more than 3 aggregate points.
