28.2 Differentiating Science Instruction

PECT lens: Objective 0013.2 tests implementing, modifying, and differentiating developmentally appropriate instruction that supports children's development and learning in science and fosters connections between science and other content areas. Module 3 remains 45 items / 90 minutes. This descriptor is about teaching, not about what PSSA might later sample (0013.3) and not about the full life/physical/earth content lists (0013.5–0013.8).

A PreK–4 science block that is only a packet, a silent video, or an ELA afternoon that never names a phenomenon has not yet become instruction. Pearson wants a teacher who can put a scientific question in children's hands, adapt so every child can investigate, record thinking, and connect measurement, texts, and outdoor places without cancelling the science target.

Pennsylvania's organizer is STEELS three-dimensional instruction (practices + core ideas + crosscutting concepts) plus ELS science in the early years. PECT 0013.2 still says DAP science and connections. Use both.

Implement DAP science: the same idea, scaled

Implement means the science actually happens: materials out, a question children can test, talk about what we notice and how we know, time to try — not a worksheet left at centers with no adult and no phenomenon.

Developmentally appropriate scales the same scientific idea across ages. Melting, growth, shadows, and pushes in PreK become more systematic observation in Grade 1–2, then measurement and fair tests in Grade 3–4. Membership in science does not start the year a statewide science test appears.

Modify instruction (how you teach) when the first design is too long, too print-heavy, too abstract, too fine-motor, or too oral. Shorten the meeting. Offer larger droppers. Start with the ice before the paragraph. Split a two-step investigation.

Differentiate so children with disabilities and English learners still pursue the intent of the science target (the same idea as 0003.7: adapt without quietly dropping the curriculum).

UDL (multiple means of engagement, representation, action and expression) is whole-class design: everyone can see the ice, hear the question, and show an answer with a drawing, a spoken claim, or a table. UDL does not replace an IEP. If the IEP names extra time, a scribe, or AT, those supports run in science too.

Inclusive labs: alternative recording and partner roles

An inclusive lab is not a watered-down craft. It is the same question with flexible how.

Alternative recording (exam gold): drawing, labeled photo, audio dictation, tablet, shared notebook page, teacher scribes the child's words. The product must still show science thinking (what changed, what we measured, what we think and why) — not only a pretty picture.

Partner roles let children with different strengths stay in the investigation: materials manager, observer, recorder, safety checker, reporter. Roles rotate. The child with limited writing is not permanently "the pourer who never thinks." The English learner is not permanently silent. A child who cannot safely pour still observes, predicts, and explains.

Sitting a child in the library during the plant investigation because "it's messy" or "it's verbal" is exclusion, not an accommodation.

Science notebooks

A science notebook is a thinking tool: dated drawings, labels, I notice / I wonder / I think because, later measurements, tables, and claims. It is not a handwriting grade, a copied conclusion from the board, or a packet of fill-in blanks that never asked a question.

PreK–K notebooks may be class charts plus individual drawings. Grade 1–2 add more personal pages. Grade 3–4 add tables and written explanations. English learners may write in a home language, use stems, or draw first. A notebook that only exists for a bulletin board is display, not 0013.2.

Outdoor learning — planned, not recess

Outdoor learning is science in the schoolyard, garden, sidewalk, weather, shadows, and living things. STEELS and ELS both expect children to study real phenomena, not only kit photos.

Honest outdoor science: a shadow-length walk at two times of day; a weekly tree sketch; a weather watch; a bug hunt with respect (look, maybe photograph, do not kill); a puddle investigation after rain. Safety (0013.1) travels outside: boundaries, allergies, weather, adult ratios, living-thing ethics.

Unlabeled recess is not a science lesson. A once-a-year field trip cannot be the entire outdoor program. A worksheet completed about the playground without going outside is not outdoor learning.

Connections to other content — without replacing science

0013.2 explicitly asks you to foster connections. Connection means the science idea travels. Replacement means the science block disappears.

Module 2 is 66% language and literacy. That weight tempts candidates to treat every block as reading. PECT Module 3 still wants a science outcome: children can explain a phenomenon with evidence — using oral language, drawing, or writing as the medium.

Not YouTube-as-science

Technology is a tool: a document camera so 24 children see one ice cube, a tablet to photograph the garden, a short clip to preview a phenomenon children will then test, or to see a place they cannot visit paired with a local comparison. Technology is not a 40-minute video while children sit, and not a substitute for materials they can touch.

Exam move: If a stem offers only a video as "the investigation," it is the distractor. If it offers materials plus talk plus optional media, it is closer to DAP.

Scenario: notebooks versus copied conclusions (Grade 1)

Ms. Patel's team used to write the "right" sentence on the board for children to copy. She instead has children draw the two plants, label light and dark, and dictate I notice…. Some pages are messy. All of them are evidence. That is 0013.2. The copied sentence was not.

Scenario: inclusive lab roles (Grade 2)

During a reflection exploration, a child with a fine-motor IEP cannot hold a small flashlight steadily. Mr. Cole assigns rotating roles: that child is observer and reporter first, then uses a larger flashlight with a partner materials manager. The target remains whether non-shiny objects can reflect light. Sending the child to the hall with a coloring sheet would have dropped the target.

Scenario: outdoor shadows (kindergarten)

The class traces shadows at 9 a.m. and again after lunch. Children notice change. Recess later is still recess; the traces were the investigation. A YouTube clip of Earth rotating, with no playground data, would have been the trap.

Scenario: literacy connection that stays science (Grade 3)

Mr. Nguyen reads an informational text about plant needs and runs the window-versus-closet test. The PA Core ELA informational-text work is real. The science target is still what plants need, with evidence. If he only assigned the reading, he taught reading, not 0013.2.

Scenario: YouTube is not the lab (Grade 4)

A colleague wants a full-period melting video "because it's cleaner." Ms. Diaz uses a two-minute clip to raise the question, then children measure ice in sun and shade and record in notebooks. Media served inquiry. Media did not replace it.

Select a phenomenon children can do, see, and record. Teach the question. Differentiate access, not membership in science. Connect other subjects so the science target is still standing when the period ends.
