Geography is how people make sense of where they are and how a place works. A region is a set of places that share a feature: a mountain region, a river valley, a city neighborhood, "our school's attendance area." Young children grasp region as places that go together (the playground zone, the cafeteria wing), not as unnamed physiographic-province lists.
Communities at elementary grain:
- Urban — many people and buildings close together; Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are the usual Pennsylvania examples.
- Suburban — neighborhoods near a city; houses, stores, cars and buses.
- Rural — more open land, farms or small towns, longer trips to some services.
Do not rank these as better or worse. Teach that people meet needs differently in different places. A child in a Philadelphia row home and a child on a farm both already have geographic knowledge. Photo sorts, walks, and "how do people here get food and get around?" beat a worksheet titled "community types."
Pennsylvania geography you should actually know
Stay with high-utility facts. Do not invent peak elevations, all 67 counties, or obscure region names the exam will not reward.
- Appalachian Mountains run across much of Pennsylvania. They shape weather, travel, and why many towns sit in valleys.
- Delaware River system — eastern Pennsylvania; Philadelphia sits on the Delaware; water flows toward Delaware Bay.
- Susquehanna River — central Pennsylvania; Harrisburg is on the Susquehanna; water flows toward Chesapeake Bay.
- Ohio River system — western Pennsylvania; at Pittsburgh the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio, which flows toward the Mississippi.
- Great Lakes drainage — a northwestern slice, including the city of Erie on Lake Erie.
- Human geography — Harrisburg is the state capital. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are the largest urban centers. Many Pennsylvania children live in suburbs or rural towns between those poles.
Watershed teaching for children is "water flows downhill toward a river or lake" plus a local creek name if you have one — not a hydrology lecture. Exam move: Children coloring a state outline have not yet studied interaction. Children who walk a block, notice a hill, a storm drain, a store, and a bus stop, and ask how people live here and how people changed this place, have.
Keep consequences honest at child grain: a dam or a highway can help some people and flood, split, or pollute a place for others. That is geography, not a lecture on environmental law (save depth for 0013.6).
Maps and other resources for geographic inquiry
Geographic inquiry is a where / why there / why care question answered with a spatial tool. It is not decorating a packet.

Globe versus map (content you must know): A globe better models Earth's round shape. A map is flat, so it distorts size, shape, or distance, but it is easier to carry and to show one region large. Teach the tradeoff. Do not tell Grade 1 that "maps are wrong." Teach: use a globe to remember the whole Earth; use a map to study our room, town, or state.
Cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west. Intermediate directions (northeast, southwest) wait until children own the four. Teach with the room and the sun, then put a compass rose on a child-made map. A packet of unlabeled compass roses with no lived space is the trap. A legend is how a map talks: if children cannot explain a symbol, they are decorating, not interpreting.
Scale in primary grades is "this map is of our classroom" and "this box means a table," not representative-fraction math.

Expanding environments (0010.1) is a check, not a ban. Start with the classroom, but children already see other places on screens and in family travel. A photo from another continent can be a comparison ("how is this street like ours?") without pretending four-year-olds can read a world atlas.
Scenarios
PreK. Ms. Grant tapes a simple classroom map at child height. Children place a photo on "where I sit" and walk the path to the bathroom, tracing it on the map. That is location, a legend (photo = me), and inquiry.
Grade 2. After a neighborhood walk, Mr. Okonkwo's class builds a map with a key (stop sign, store, park). They mark north using the morning sun. They sort photos of a city block, a suburb, and a farm and tell how people get food and get around in each — physical and human characteristics plus community types.
