0013.5 was the organism. 0013.6 is the system the organism lives in, plus how people use and protect that system. PreK children already garden, recycle, and notice a creek. Grade 4 children can name a watershed and why coal is a different kind of resource from a forest.

Agriculture and society

Agriculture is how people grow food, fiber, and other products from plants and animals. Society depends on it: no farms, no lunch. Pennsylvania is an agricultural state at teacher grain — dairy, poultry, corn and hay, apples, and mushrooms (the Kennett Square area is widely known for mushroom production). You do not need county output tables. You do need that farms are workplaces and ecosystems, that soil and water make farming possible, and that farm choices (fertilizer, tilling, stream buffers) affect watersheds.

Child-level agriculture:

  • School garden or windowsill salad greens: we plant, water, harvest, eat — production meeting a need.
  • Farm-to-school photos or a farm visit: who grew the milk?
  • Compost: food scraps become soil helpers — a cycle, not a lecture on nitrogen.

Connect to 0010.8 economics only as "people produce food others consume." This descriptor is the environmental system.

Integrated pest management (IPM)

Pests are organisms that damage crops, buildings, or health (weeds in the garden, mice in the cafeteria, aphids on classroom plants). IPM is a decision process, not a product name:

  1. Monitor / identify — What is it? How many? Do we actually have a problem?
  2. Prevent — Sanitation, screens, sealed food, healthy plants, removing standing water.
  3. Least-harmful control first — Hand-pick, traps, mulch, beneficial insects; chemical control last and targeted, not a calendar spray.

School-relevant: Pennsylvania schools commonly use IPM thinking for cockroaches, mice, and playground weeds. A Grade 2 class that finds ants should not dump pesticide as the first "science experiment." They should observe where the ants travel, remove the snack crumbs, and seal the crack — monitor and prevent. That is 0013.6, and it is also safety (0014.7). Do not have children handle pesticides.

Threatened, endangered, extinct — and laws without a code dump

Do not treat endangered and extinct as synonyms. A living endangered animal can still be helped. An extinct species cannot.

Bald eagle is a useful recovery story at teacher grain: it was listed as endangered, people protected birds and habitat, and populations rebounded enough that it was taken off the federal endangered list. That teaches laws and human action can work — not a guarantee for every species.

Environmental laws and regulations at PreK–4 grain: communities make rules to protect air, water, land, and living things. The federal Endangered Species Act is the usual national example of species protection (do not recite section numbers). Pennsylvania has a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and natural-resource agencies; do not invent Pa. Code citations, act numbers, or fine amounts. Child language: we have rules so people cannot dump oil in the creek or take every animal from a habitat. A classroom rule ("we do not pick every wildflower in the schoolyard") is the PreK analog; Grade 3–4 can hear that towns and states have bigger versions.

Children do not need a 12-biome memorization list. They need climate + typical life, and they need to place Pennsylvania in the forest-and-water story, not in a desert unit taught as if it were local.

Renewable and nonrenewable resources

A natural resource is something from the environment people use.

Management means we choose how fast we use a resource and what we damage to get it. Cutting every tree without planting ends the forest's renewability in that place. Burning coal provided energy and jobs; it also changed landscapes and air — honest at child grain, not a partisan lecture (same tone as 0010.7 industry history). Reduce, reuse, recycle is one management habit, not the whole of 0013.6.

Watersheds and wetlands — the PA exam gold

A watershed is all the land that drains to a common body of water. Rain that hits a schoolyard flows downhill into a storm drain or creek, then a river. Children can model this with a crumpled-paper "landscape" and a spray bottle.

Pennsylvania and the Chesapeake Bay: About half of Pennsylvania's land sits in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, even though the Bay itself is outside the state. Water from much of central and northern Pennsylvania travels the Susquehanna River (the Bay's largest freshwater tributary) into the Chesapeake. What Pennsylvanians put on lawns, farms, and streets can affect water downstream — a human-environment idea children can grasp as "our creek is connected." Other PA drainages (do not skip; 0010.6 already named them): Delaware system in the east, Ohio system in the west, Lake Erie in the northwest. 0013.6 wants the science of drainage and water quality, not a county-map dump.

Wetlands are lands soaked with water much of the time — marshes, swamps, bogs. Functions at elementary grain:

  • Habitat and nursery for fish, frogs, birds, insects
  • Filter mud and some pollution
  • Sponge for floodwater
  • People sometimes drain wetlands to farm or build — a tradeoff

Pennsylvania still has wetlands in river valleys, mountain bogs, and lake shores. A field trip to a marsh, or a photo sort of "wet land vs dry field," beats a definition copied from the board.

Humans and the environment

People depend on the environment (food, water, air, wood, coal, beauty). People change it (farms, cities, mines, dams, litter). People can steward it (buffers along streams, IPM, protecting habitat, using less of a nonrenewable resource). That triad is 0013.6. It overlaps 0010.6 human-environment geography; here the scoring target is ecological consequence and resource science.

Scenarios

PreK. After snack, children sort waste into trash, recycle, and compost. They water the class peas. Agriculture and stewardship as habits, not slogans.

Grade 2. Ants appear by the sink. Ms. Shah's class maps the trail, wipes crumbs, and sets a kid-safe observation (not poison). IPM: monitor and prevent. They also walk to a creek and pour water on the playground slope to see the watershed.

Grade 4. Mr. Boone uses a Pennsylvania map of major drainages. Children mark that their county's water goes toward the Susquehanna and Chesapeake, the Delaware, the Ohio, or Lake Erie. They compare forest (renewable if managed) with coal (nonrenewable), match biomes to climate cards, and sort species cards into endangered vs extinct. A short news photo of a wetland restoration is humans repairing, not a statute quiz.

Differentiation: Picture sorts (renewable/nonrenewable, living in forest vs desert). A child with an IEP might place a toy fish in a wetland tray instead of writing a paragraph. The target stays the ecological idea (0013.2).

Exam traps for 0013.6

  • Endangered = extinct.
  • Coal as renewable "because Pennsylvania still has some."
  • Chesapeake is irrelevant because the Bay is not in Pennsylvania.
  • IPM = spray first, or "IPM is only for farmers."
  • Invented statute numbers or partisan environmental speeches.
  • Biome as a coloring packet with no climate–life link, or teaching desert as if it were local.
  • Dumping 0013.5 life cycles or 0010.6 map skills into an ecology stem without the environmental idea.

Plan: "Children will use [garden, creek model, resource sort, species card] to explain [how people get food / how water is connected / how a resource is replaced or not / how a species can be protected or lost]." If there is no system and no human consequence, it is not yet 0013.6.
