Rocks and soil: Rocks are solid earth materials. Soil is a mixture of weathered rock bits, organic matter (once-living), air, and water. Children should feel sand, silt/clay, and humus-rich potting soil and notice plants need soil that holds water and air. Do not require a full three-type rock-cycle lecture in PreK. Grade 3–4 can hear that some rocks form from cooled melted rock, some from bits pressed together, some changed by heat and pressure — still without memorizing twenty rock names. A local gravel tray beats a poster of unidentified minerals.

Water cycle, weather, and climate — PA rain and snow

Water cycle (own the four words):

  3. Precipitation — water falls: in Pennsylvania, rain and snow (sleet/hail as extras, not the first list).

A puddle on the playground that "disappears" is evaporation, not magic. A classroom terrarium or a kettle-and-mirror demo makes condensation visible. Do not teach that clouds are smoke or that the water cycle happens only over the ocean.

A child who says "climate is the weather in the air" has not separated the timescales. A class weather chart (weeks) plus a "what is winter usually like here?" talk (years) teaches the split.

Seasons: Earth's axis is tilted. When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the sun, Pennsylvania gets more direct light and longer dayssummer. When it tilts awaywinter. Moon phases: The moon orbits Earth. We see different amounts of the moon's sunlit half — new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, full. Children should observe and draw the moon for several weeks.

Not Earth's shadow. Earth's shadow on the moon is a lunar eclipse, rare and different. That confusion is another high-yield trap.

Do not require umbra/penumbra, tidal formulas, or "the moon is only out at night" (it is often visible in daytime).

Solar system: The sun is a star at the center. Planets (including Earth) orbit the sun. Moons orbit planets (Earth has one main moon). Other objects (asteroids, comets) can wait unless a child asks.
