Muscles of the head, face, and neck produce every expression a client makes in the chair and every stretch you use with a straight razor. The Oregon Barbering Examination bulletin's 3-question head-and-face block names muscles as its own sub-topic, even though bones, muscles, and nerves together are only three items. That is not a reason to skim. Facial massage also sits in Barbering Services: skin care is 4 questions (skin analysis, facial, facial massage), and hair care includes scalp massage. More important for shop work, ORS 690.005(2)(c) puts massage of the scalp, face, and neck inside the statutory definition of barbering, along with facial and scalp treatments that do not use galvanic or faradic appliances. Muscle direction is therefore both a theory item and a legal-scope item. HLO still draws the names from Milady, 5th edition, and Pivot Point Barbering Fundamentals — the same sources as the rest of the 100-question paper.

Origin and insertion in barber language

A muscle has two attachments.

  • The origin is the more fixed attachment — usually closer to the midline or to a stable bone. Think of it as where the muscle starts.
  • The insertion is the more movable attachment. Think of it as where the muscle goes to do its job.

When a muscle contracts, it pulls the insertion toward the origin. That is the whole mechanical story. Facial massage in the barbering textbooks HLO cites is performed from insertion toward origin, in the direction of the muscle fibers. You are supporting the muscle toward its fixed end, not dragging it off its mooring.

Worked example — frontalis. Origin is the epicranial aponeurosis. Insertion is the skin of the eyebrows. Contraction pulls the brows toward the aponeurosis: the forehead wrinkles and the scalp draws forward. Insertion-to-origin massage therefore runs from the brows up toward the hairline, not down toward the nose.

Worked example — platysma. Origin is the fascia of the chest and shoulder. Insertion is the mandible and the skin of the lower face. Insertion-to-origin massage on the neck runs from the jaw down toward the clavicle along the sheet of the muscle. Spa habits that always stroke up the neck are not the textbook barbering rule Oregon's sources teach.

Shaving uses the same map without calling it a massage. The non-razor hand stretches skin taut over the muscle so the blade meets a firm plane. You are not stretching the muscle like a gym band. You are flattening the skin that rides on it. A loose platysma on the neck is why a wobbly neck shave nicks. A sphincter-like orbicularis oris is why the upper lip needs a stretch that follows the mouth, not a yank toward the ear.

Muscles of the scalp

Epicranius (occipitofrontalis)

The epicranius is the broad muscle that covers the top of the skull. It has two bellies joined by a tendon, the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica).

  • Frontalis (front belly): over the frontal bone. Raises the eyebrows, wrinkles the forehead, draws the scalp forward.
  • Occipitalis (back belly): over the occipital bone. Draws the scalp backward. Origin is on the occipital bone; insertion is the aponeurosis, so occipital massage runs from the crown toward the nape.

Scalp massage and shampoo manipulations authorized for Oregon barbers travel this pair. A tight aponeurosis feels like a drum; a loose scalp moves over the cranium. Circular movements over the tendon are fine as long as you are not dragging frontalis toward the nose.

Muscles of the eyebrow and nose

Orbicularis oculi

The orbicularis oculi is a ring (sphincter) around the eye socket. It closes the eyelid. Crow's-feet lines form here. When you shave or outline near the temple and lateral brow, this muscle is the bed under the skin. Stretch the skin taut; do not pull the eyelid away from the globe.

Corrugator (corrugator supercilii)

The corrugator lies beneath the frontalis and orbicularis oculi at the inner brow. It draws the eyebrow down and in, producing the vertical glabellar wrinkles — the 11s of a frown. You will see this muscle work when a client squints at the mirror. You do not cut it. You may massage the glabella from the inner brow toward the origin on the bone, insertion to origin.

Procerus

The procerus covers the bridge of the nose. It depresses the eyebrow and wrinkles the skin over the bridge (horizontal lines at the root of the nose). It is the muscle between the brows on the nasal bones you named in the last section.

Muscles of the mouth and cheek

Orbicularis oris

The orbicularis oris is the ring around the mouth. It compresses, contracts, puckers, and wrinkles the lips. Mustache work, upper-lip shaves, and the outline of a goatee all sit on this sphincter. Stretch with the curve of the mouth. A sideways yank toward the ear bunches the lip and puts the razor in a fold.

Buccinator

The buccinator is the thin, flat muscle of the cheek between the maxilla and the mandible. It compresses the cheek and expels air between the lips — the trumpeter's muscle. A cheek shave travels over it. A slight puff of the cheek can help a cautious stretch; you still keep the skin taut and the blade shallow.

Zygomaticus

The zygomaticus muscles (major and minor) run from the zygomatic bone toward the angle of the mouth. They elevate the lip as in laughing or smiling. The smile line of a beard is not drawn on a random diagonal; it relates to this muscle and to the cheekbone under it. If the client grins while you cut the cheek line, the insertion has moved. Wait for rest, then cut.

Muscles of mastication (chewing)

These close the jaw. They are not muscles of expression in the seventh-nerve sense, but they are on every barbering muscle list.

Masseter

The masseter runs from the zygomatic arch to the mandible. It coordinates closing the jaw. Have the client clench: the masseter bulges at the back of the jaw. A full beard covers this belly. A tight clench changes the jawline you just designed — ask the client to rest the jaw when you outline.

Temporalis

The temporalis is a fan-shaped muscle on the temporal bone, above the ear. It also helps close the jaw. A temple fade sits over it. Do not confuse temporalis (muscle) with temporal bone, and do not confuse either with the temporal branch of a nerve. Three different structures share the word temporal; the exam will pick one.

Muscles of the neck

Platysma

The platysma is a broad, thin sheet from the chest and shoulder to the side of the chin. It depresses the mandible and the lower lip (sadness) and wrinkles the neck. For Oregon barbers this is the muscle of the anterior neck shave. Thin muscle, thin skin, a moving larynx underneath. Stretch the platysma so the blade does not dip into a fold. Insertion-to-origin massage on this muscle is jaw toward clavicle.

Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)

The sternocleidomastoid extends from the sternum and clavicle to the mastoid process of the temporal bone. The name is the attachments in order: sterno- (sternum), cleido- (clavicle), mastoid. It rotates the head to the opposite side and flexes the neck. You use it every time you turn a client's head for a side fade or a behind-the-ear shave. The visible cord on a thin neck is often this muscle. Massage from the mastoid (insertion) toward the sternum and clavicle (origin) along the muscle.

Trapezius

The trapezius is the large triangular muscle covering the back of the neck and the upper and middle back. It draws the head back, rotates the shoulder, and controls swinging of the arm. Nape clipper work, cape placement, and chair height all meet the trapezius. A client hunched forward shortens the nape you are trying to fade. Ask them to sit tall so the occipital bone and the trapezius return to a usable plane.
