Thermal styling and artificial hair are the last two named subtopics in the 11-question Cutting and Styling block. They are still styling under ORS 690.005(2)(a), plus the hair-goods hygiene rule at OAR 817-010-0085. They are not permanent waving, relaxing, bleaching, or coloring. Those words sit in hair design at ORS 690.005(10)(b). If a stem offers a relaxer so a press will last, the barbering answer is no.
Heat and keratin
Hair is keratin. Hydrogen bonds in that keratin break in the presence of water and heat and reform as the hair cools and dries. That is thermal styling. With heat and tension, coiled alpha keratin can be set toward stretched beta keratin. A blow-dry with tension, a curling iron wrapped and cooled, a flat iron pass, or a pressing comb all use that set. Moisture — humidity, a later shampoo, sweat — lets hydrogen bonds reset toward the hair's unstyled shape. Teach that as a temporary, physical set.
Disulfide bonds are the chemical bonds that a perm or relaxer targets. Breaking them is a chemical service (OAR 817-005-0005(7)): a product that restructures hair. That is hair design, not barbering. Do not tell the laws exam that a pressing comb "permanently straightens like a relaxer." Overheating does not convert a press into a chemical; it denatures protein, drives out moisture, and can burn the scalp.
ORS 690.005(2)(c) lets barbers use some mechanical appliances on scalp, face, and neck treatments, but not galvanic or faradic. A blow-dryer and a curling iron used to style hair are ordinary styling tools, not galvanic current.
Blow-dry, curling iron, flat iron, pressing
Blow-dry from damp toward dry. A concentrator nozzle directs air for a smoother, more stretched (beta) set. A diffuser spreads air for curl pattern with less blow-out. Follow the documented direction of the cut. Wet hair stretched with high heat is where keratin fails — keep the airflow moving.
A curling iron uses a heated barrel, often with a clamp. Section, wrap, heat, cool before combing. A flat iron uses two plates; hair should be dry. A pressing comb (hot comb) is classic barber thermal work: hair dry, a pressing oil or cream on intact hair, small sections, comb heated to a tested temperature (paper or water test in the textbook method — never on the client's skin). Pressing is styling. It is not a relaxer and it is not a medical appliance.
If the scalp is abraded or the hair is chemically compromised from a service the client had elsewhere, you still analyze first (Chapter 7). Thermal heat on a burn or a relaxer-break is how you turn a style into a complaint.

OAR 817-010-0101: equipment surfaces (including back-bars) are cleanable and non-porous; all equipment is clean and in good repair; blood-contaminated surfaces take high-level disinfectant. A cracked hood dryer or a frayed iron cord is not "in good repair."
Portable blow-dryers, curling irons, and flat irons are electrical tools other than clipper blades. OAR 817-010-0069(1): remove all hair and foreign material, then disinfect with a low-level disinfectant according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not immerse an electrical iron. Do not skip the hair wrapped around the barrel. Clipper blades remain the high-level saturation exception from Section 10.2.
Artificial hair: toupees, hairpieces, integration
Toupees and other hairpieces are manufactured or custom goods that cover part or all of the scalp. Integration pieces let the client's own hair come through a base. ORS 690.046(3) lets a barber certificate holder practice natural hair care, which includes making customized wigs from hair or fibers (ORS 690.005(15)(a)(C)). Cutting and styling a piece on a client is still styling. Chemical color of the piece is still hair design unless another certificate covers it.
OAR 817-010-0085 Hairpieces is short and examinable. The current text:

Teach that actual rule. Do not invent a 10-minute high-level immersion for a toupee — the rule points to the manufacturer's instructions for used goods, and to a disposable cover for try-on. A bare scalp under a shop try-on piece is a Division 10 miss even if the fade was perfect.
Do not place another client's worn piece on a new client as if it were a disinfected comb. A try-on manufactured piece needs the disposable cover. A used good headed for resale needs manufacturer cleaning and the word "used." A client's own piece that they bring in is theirs; you still drape, you still wash hands, and you still do not store it in the clean-tool drawer with disinfected shears (OAR 817-010-0075). Clean storage is separate from soiled storage. Follow the piece manufacturer's cleaning method — solvents and bases vary; barbicide-on-lace is not a rule HLO wrote.
Oregon shop scenario
A client in Medford wants a press and then wants to try a manufactured toupee from the shop's display. You confirm there is no chemical-relaxer request — pressing only. Hair is dry, pressing cream is applied, sections are small, and the comb is tested off the scalp. After the press, the iron and comb are cleared of hair and given low-level disinfectant; the stationary dryer the client sat under is equipment that must stay clean and in good repair. For the try-on, you place a disposable cover on every part of the head that will touch the piece, then you try the manufactured hairpiece. You do not set that piece on a bare scalp, and if the shop later resells a returned piece, it is cleaned per the manufacturer and marked "used."
