The Oregon Barbering Examination Information Bulletin (revised October 25, 2019) assigns Design 10 of 100 questions on the 90-minute theory paper administered by the Oregon Health Licensing Office (HLO) for the Board of Cosmetology. Passing is 75 percent. Those ten items are 10 percent of the field exam and the second-largest single slice inside Barbering Services (42 questions), after Cutting and Styling (11). The bulletin lists the design names in one breath: elevations (projections); facial shapes; form and texture; head form; profiles; shape, balance, and proportion. This section teaches three of them: facial shapes, head form, and profiles. HLO draws theory from Milady's Standard Professional Barbering, 5th edition (2011), and Pivot Point Barbering Fundamentals, 1st edition (2018), units 102B–109B and 112B. Oregon tests that textbook design language — not a product brand and not a medical diagnosis.

ORS 690.005(2) defines barbering as cosmetic work, not medical diagnosis or treatment: shampoo, style, cut, singe, and condition hair; apply tonics and dressings; massage the scalp, face, and neck; and shave, trim, or cut the beard or mustache. Design is how you use that authority on a living head. ORS 690.046(3) also lets a barber certificate holder practice natural hair care, so the canvas is not only a clipper cut. The Treatments block (7 questions) already tested consultation. Design is where the consultation becomes a silhouette. Document the client's goal. Do not impose a textbook oval if the client wants a square beard.

Why facial shapes, head form, and profiles matter on test day

A close score is 75 items correct. Ten design questions can be the difference between a same-day certificate and another $45 retake (Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 817-040-0003). You will see stems that name a face as round or a profile as convex and then ask what the hair or beard should do. If you only remember a rule that everyone must leave looking oval, you will miss the item that honors a documented request, and you will miss the item that asks you to add width on an oblong face instead of adding height.

Seven facial shapes

Facial shape is the two-dimensional front-view outline from hairline to chin and temple to temple. Textbooks treat oval as the reference because its proportions — roughly one-and-a-half times longer than wide, with the forehead slightly wider than the chin — accept the most styles. Oregon does not require you to convert every client to oval. It requires you to name the shape and to know which hair and beard choices add height, add width, or soften an angle.

Oval

Slightly longer than wide; gently rounded jaw; forehead a little wider than the chin. Most silhouettes work. Do not correct an oval the client likes. If they want a square beard on an oval face, write it down and build the square on purpose.

Round

Length and width similar; full cheeks; curved jaw. Goal: add height, reduce width. Keep the sides closer; leave length or volume on top. Avoid a round outline that copies the face. Beard: reduce bulk on the cheeks and sideburns; allow a little length at the chin so the face reads longer, not rounder.

Square

Wide forehead, wide angular jaw, similar width at the temples and mandible. Goal: soften the corners and/or add height. A soft fringe, slightly closer sides, and height on top take the box off the hairline. Beard: round the jaw corners or drop a little length at the chin so the mandible does not double the square. If the client wants the box kept — a common request — document that and keep the corners sharp.

Oblong

Long and narrow. Goal: add width, reduce apparent length. Avoid extra height on top. Fuller sides; bangs or a forward fringe to shorten the forehead; a beard that adds width at the jaw rather than a long goat that lengthens the chin.

Pear / triangular (base-down triangle)

Narrow forehead, wide jaw. Goal: add width at the temples and forehead, minimize the jaw. Fuller hair at the sides of the forehead; closer at the nape and mandible. Beard: keep the jawline tight. Do not stack density on an already wide mandible.

Inverted triangle / heart

Wide forehead, narrow chin; a widow's peak is common. Goal: reduce forehead width, add width at the jaw. Soft bangs to break the forehead; closer at the temples; fullness toward the jaw. Beard: add bulk at the chin and jaw so the lower third can match the brow.

Diamond

Narrow forehead, wide cheekbones (zygomatic prominences), narrow chin. Goal: reduce cheek width, add width at the forehead and jaw. Fullness at the temples and jaw; closer over the cheekbones. Beard: fill the jaw and chin so the diamond does not hang on the zygomatic bones.

Head form: the three-dimensional canvas

Head form is not facial shape. Facial shape is the front outline of the face. Head form is the three-dimensional skull the hair sits on: crown height, parietal ridge, occipital curve, nape depth, and whether the head itself is round, flat-sided, or oblong. A round face can sit on a flat-sided head. A square beard on a round head form still has to travel the parietal ridge.

Pivot Point and Milady treat the head as a sculpture with four views: front, profile, back, and top. The parietal ridge is where the vertical side wall turns into the curved top — the same landmark named in the bones chapter. The occipital curve decides whether a nape can be left long without ballooning. Growth patterns — cowlick, crown whorl, receding corners, nape hair that grows up — belong to head-form analysis because they change how a design sits after the client walks out.

You cannot move the bone. You change the silhouette around the bone: closer where the head is already wide, more length or volume where it is flat or receding. A fade that ignores a prominent parietal ridge either shelves on the side or blows a hole in the round. That is a design error before it is a clipper error.

Profiles: straight, concave, convex

Profile is the side view of forehead, nose, and chin.

Straight profile. Forehead, nose, and chin fall close to a vertical line. Least compensation. Do not add a heavy bang or a projecting beard unless the client asks for that look.

Convex profile. Receding forehead and chin with a more prominent nose — the outline curves outward. Compensate with bangs or fringe that add projection at the forehead and a beard that adds projection at the chin so the nose is not the only forward point. A close chin on a convex profile makes the nose dominate.

Concave profile. Prominent forehead and chin with a receding or smaller nose — the outline curves inward (sometimes called a dish). Compensate by not adding more forehead or chin: keep bangs off or short, keep the beard closer, and avoid a long nape that adds a fourth bulge behind the head.

Nape length is a profile tool. A long nape adds visual weight behind the ear and occipital bone; a short, tapered nape verticalizes the back of the head. Pair nape length with the profile and head form you actually see, not with a magazine fade.

Oregon consultation: document the goal

Oregon barbering is cosmetic. You recommend balance; you do not prescribe a medical correction, and you do not override a competent adult's documented request. If the textbook move for a round face is a longer chin beard, and the client wants a tight, square strap, write the request, show the likely result — the face may still read round — and proceed if they confirm. HLO is not testing whether you can bully a client into oval. It is testing whether you can identify oval, round, square, oblong, pear/triangular, inverted triangle/heart, and diamond — and whether you know which hair and beard choices add height, add width, or soften an angle.

Oregon shop scenario

A client at a licensed Eugene facility has a round face, a convex profile (receding chin, stronger nose), and a round head form with a low occipital. They want a skin fade and a square, high-density beard. Textbook oval-chasing would leave length on top, keep sides close, and drop the chin beard to elongate the face and fill the receding chin. The square beard they asked for will not elongate the round face; it will emphasize width. You can still cut it — after you explain that the square will read wider, not longer, and you note the goal on the consultation card. You keep the fade honest to the parietal ridge (head form), you do not leave a long nape that balloons over the low occipital, and you use a little chin length inside the square so the convex profile is not all nose. That is design as Oregon tests it: name the shape, read the head, read the profile, then either balance or honor the documented request.
