Clipper-over-comb and clipper-over-fingers
Clipper-over-comb uses the comb as the guide. Teeth lift the hair; the clipper rides the comb spine or the teeth, depending on how much leftover length you want. It is the classic nape, side, and around-the-ear method, and it is how you erase a shelf without jumping a full blade size. Keep the comb moving. A parked comb plus a running blade chews a hole.
Clipper-over-fingers is the top-and-crown cousin of shear-over-fingers. Fingers hold the section; the clipper cuts to the finger line. Use it when the interior is too long for a comb-only guide and you still want clipper speed. It is not a substitute for a #2 blade on the nape, and it is not a reason to skip a traveling guideline on the top.
Taper lever: open versus closed
The taper lever (also called the fade lever) changes the gap between the moving blade and the still blade on many adjustable clippers.

Guards on a magnetic-blade clipper often read #1 = 1/8", #1½ = 3/16", #2 = 1/4". Do not mix a detachable 1 with a guard 1 unless the stem tells you which system. The exam cares that you can order lengths and that you know 000 is closer than 2.
Taper, fade, bald fade, and the weight line
A taper is a gradual length change from short to longer. Classic barber tapers often still show hair at the neck and sides; the silhouette is blended, not shaved to skin. A fade is a more dramatic taper. Length drops faster, and the bottom band is very short. A bald fade (skin fade) takes the lowest band to visible skin. Many bald fades are clippered with a 000 or a balding blade, then finished with a razor. The razor finish is a scalp shave, not the Chapter 11 fourteen-stroke face pattern.
Low, mid, and high name where the shortest band sits: low near the ear, mid toward the temple, high toward the parietal ridge. The client's documented goal, head form, and recession decide the height — not a social-media default.
A weight line is the visible shelf where a longer length sits on a shorter one. Unblended 2-over-0 looks like a hat. Blending removes or softens that shelf: clipper-over-comb, lever work, and in-between blades (0 to 1 to 1½) are the tools. If you can still see a hard step after the client stands up, you have not blended.
Arching is the curved connection from the sideburn through the temple into the fade or outline. A fade that does not arch into the sideburn looks like two haircuts. Section 10.3 finishes the outline; this section is the length connection that makes the arch possible.
Oregon disinfection: clipper blades are the exception
OAR 817-010-0069(1) says all electrical tools and implements, with the exception of clipper blades, must be disinfected before each use by (a) removing all hair and foreign material, then (b) using a low-level disinfectant according to the manufacturer's instructions. That is the clipper body, the cord, the blow-dryer housing, and the curling-iron barrel.
OAR 817-010-0069(2) is the blade sentence HLO writes items on. Electrical clipper blades must be disinfected before each use: (a) remove all hair and all foreign material; (b) completely saturate the clipper blade with a high-level disinfectant solution, spray, or foam used according to the manufacturer's instructions. OAR 817-010-0069(3) allows sterilization of blades by an approved method listed in OAR 817-010-0065.
Do not dunk the motor. Do not skip the hair in the teeth and spray the housing. Hair left in the blades is not "saturated." High-level on the blades, low-level on the rest of the electrical tool, hair removed first — that triad is the laws-exam version of a fade.
OAR 817-010-0075 still applies: disinfected tools stored separately from used tools; drawers for clean tools kept clean and free of hair.

A client in Salem wants a mid fade with a natural nape. You start with a 000, lever closed, at the bottom; open the lever as you climb; step to 0, then 1, then 1½ into the parietal ridge.
